How to achieve elegance in a room

I think you should have painted the entire room the same colour not the 2 different shades, as to my eyes they don't complement each other that well.

I think out of the pair of them the green which is on the window wall would be what I see as being more elegant, but its to each their own with this kind of thing isn't it!?

Yes I agree, but the sample cards look completely different - I'll see if I can find them and get a picture.

Yeah I agree also, that colour is a less saturated deeper tone, even though its the the lighter colour of the two.

The gf likes the greener green better.

Look how different they look in this picture compared to the first one: This is looking away from the window.

The sample card looked like the darker section above the door, not like the brighter green nearer the floor. The other colour is a closer match to the sample card. Its hard to believe that green on the left is all the same colour, it looks like 3 different shades from top to bottom.


I also have a problem now with what to do in the rest of the house. I wanted it to look quite uniform across the whole house - similar colour schemes. Would have naturally gone to neutral colours but now we have these green colours. Gf wants a deep mustard colour in the hallway downstairs, it is a nice colour but then we'll have mustard downstairs, green upstairs, whatever other different hues in the other rooms....its turning into a multicoloured mess, the opposite from being calming and homogenous. Its actually causing me a lot of stress right now this is, trying to think about what blinds to get, what flooring to get to match these colours without it looking like we've picked every shade in the brochure.

I agree. I think you want a much, much paler green than that.

How did you pair them? Not suggesting using F&B paints but if you go on any of their colours on their website it shows you colours that go together.

What are the colours? The green/grey looks like F&B pigeon.
Other looks like F&B Bancha.

Also another point, you say you’re replacing carpet with wooden floors… how dark are you going? Room might be a bit too dark on dark then.

I actually kind of like the colours in the second picture… probably because the big white door breaks it up

We've got like a million sample cards from the various decoration stores. Then we had the chosen colours scanned and mixed at the local Crown decorating centre. The cards looked like a very dark green and a medium grey tone to me, but not really what it looks like on the wall.

What are the colours?

Im trying to find the original colour cards - the gf has put them somewhere. I'll post a photo of them.

Yeah I don’t think it looks that bad honestly. Some furniture in, maybe some coving and it’ll look alright.

Not sure it achieves elegance… but it’s a starting point. Furniture, light fittings, hardware etc will get you there.

Here is their image of Duck Green, which looks lovely and rich, deep, moody tone:

I would buy it based on image A but be extremely disappointed when it turns out like image B. A similar thing has happened to me here.

Artificial light makes the other wall look a lot more grey:

Not sure whether carpet quite matches but add a bit of furnishing and will look good.

Maybe a new light fitting and a column rad if can stretch

I've been looking through a number of paint / colour charts recently as I'm looking to redecorate a few rooms next year and one of the places I was looking at for samples was Pantone (slightly job related as well) and one of the things they have on their site is a light testing machine so you can see what your colour choices look like under various lighting conditions. As seen in your photos a painted wall will look different throughout the day depending on the warm or cold light during the day as well as under artificial lighting. Did you buy tester pots first or just get the paints mixed up to do the full room?

Haha, do you know what I didnt even see that as my eyes were drawn to the door and rad!

You are absolutely correct though, paint tester pots are a must for stuff like this.

I wouldnt say those are a million miles off how they look on your wall. As said in the previous post it always pays to use a tester pot as the lighting in the room is going to make them potentially look completely different!

Agreed but see the colour cards above, one was meant to be grey.

I would personally paint it all one colour (the 'good earth' green/grey) and add darker colours in the room with curtains and furnishings etc. Perhaps a floor length pair of heavy curtains with tie-backs to soften the window space along with a ceiling rose and some classic style coving.
They are both nice colours however.
