The kherson retreat was conducted more orderly because it was pre planned, the retreat was approved several weeks before it happened, Russia wanted to wait until after the US election before officially announcing the retreat

Unfortunately Surovikin is probably one of the few, if not the only, commanders who might turn things around for Russia - he values being organised, has combined arms experience and has learnt lessons the hard way that a lot of Russian commanders haven't. Fortunately most of those above and below him as noted are a shambles. (He is also willing to be brutal and get things done using essentially terrorist methods).

They wanted to wait because if Trump was still relevant and controlled the Senate then the tide would have turned in their favour, slightly.

USA would have stopped funding and walked away, possibly even from NATO

The world, not just Ukraine can breath a sigh of relief that it's the begining of the end for Trump

Sadly likely more about consolidating to positions within their means so as to buy time to bring more conscripts up to some kind of standard and survive the winter. This war is likely far from over unless Ukraine can bring the war to Russia - they are slowing phasing into a larger civilian and industrial mobilisation.

I'm not making a comment about the sensibility of the action as it's clearly far more sense than has been seen for months from the previous commanders. My point revolves around the deranged Russian imperialists having their prizes taken away from them needing a sacrifice.

The issue is time- Russia wants a slow attrition, it needs time to bring it's production online (assuming it has cash). Also the first section of the war has the effect of slowly removing the corruption. Ukraine wants a fast win and for it to not drag on. Winter is coming and that will be easier on those that can shoot from long range (ie missiles).

It does makes me wonder if China is sitting back and letting the west deplete their stocks before mounting an attack on Taiwan...
