Might be a tooling thing. Suspect lots of companies are already set up to make standard size BB's than specialist HIMARS versions.

The smaller size has a much higher lethality/hit rate on equipment in the area. Remember as the size of the shot increases, the actual number of shots it can hold decreases at a higher proportion.

So a doubling in size doesnt mean half the shots, it means like a quarter or less. The whole idea behind these rounds is to shred infantry and light equipment in a large area, not penetrate armor / bunkers. They have a different round for that.

AP has fired James LaPorta, the journalist responsible for the 'Russian missiles hit Poland' story.

The Associated Press scared much of the world last Tuesday when it alerted readers that “a senior U.S. intelligence official” said “Russian missiles crossed into NATO member Poland, killing two people.”

That report, which was widely cited across the internet and on cable news, was taken offline the following day and replaced with an editor’s note admitting the single source was wrong and that “subsequent reporting showed that the missiles were Russian-made and most likely fired by Ukraine in defense against a Russian attack.”

On Monday, the AP fired James LaPorta, the investigative reporter responsible for that story, Confider has learned.

Something I still find fascinating is how ineffective and effective Russia's air defence and electronic warfare systems have been.

Russia has spent decades preparing to defend against a NATO attack, not preparing to attack Europe like it's doing now in Ukraine.

So when they were designing their anti air systems and electronic warfare systems they never particularly worried about about forward operations; their goal was to defend against enemies coming towards them.

As a result, Russian electronic warfare systems and anti air systems just want to destroy everything in front of it, enemy or friend makes no difference.

So now 8 months into the war we are still in an environment where the Russian air defence systems and electronic warfare systems must be shutdown anytime the Russians decides to launch an offensive and these systems can only be turned back on when they are defending against a Ukrainian attack. This leaves them very vulnerable.

Ironically we almost adopted an intermediate round post-WW2... but then the Americans decided it wasn't powerful enough... then went in completely the opposite direction resulting in the current situation...

We'd have had something like this post-WW2 otherwise with a .280 round

And now the latest idea from the US is to have a .277 round
Gun Jesus likes the .280, and the EM-2.

EM2. So ahead of its time.
It got adopted and then un-adaopted when Churchill switched us to the FAL.

Flying like that without a ton of experience and skill even getting the controls wrong by a millilitre can put you into an unrecoverable sink... (never mind some of the other ground effects).

One of my childhood mates used to fly SAR for Bristows out of Weymouth. Used to go down a couple of times a year and spend a few hours out on training flights which they did every day. I was amazed how much they were allowed to throw the heli around, doing wing overs with our legs dangling out of the open side door (on a safety line obviously) and low level flight. Used to get winched down to a boat, hang out there for 15 mins then they'd come back and pick us up. Was great fun. Took this pic of another mate getting winched down.

The Yanks have moved to a 6.8 x 51mm round for their XM5 after 5.56 x 45mm proved less than ideal during recent conflicts where enemy forces often initiated contact from ranges of 500 metres or more.

That’s also a key reason behind US infantry units moving from the M249 SAW (5.56) to the M240B (7.62).
