R08ST ME

4080, I bought one :(

I wanted a 3080FE back in 2020, I fell in love with it. But I couldn't get one. And by the time I could get one in 2022 the mere thought of the opportunity left a sour taste in my mouth. So I did the next worst thing and purchased a 4080. So in lieu of a 4080 owners thread I present to you the 'R08ST ME' thread. Go crazy.

Enjoy the card :D

This is the type of thinking that's part of the problem.
explain?

the 3090ti FE is still almost £1200 and is nowhere near the performance despite being only £95 cheaper as well as being 'old tech'.

the cheapest 4090 available is £1800.

to get anything under a grand is a considerable performance drop from the 4080.

i'm not saying the pricing is right, but people are hating on the 4080 when pure performance wise for the price comparable to everything else feels like the best buy, esp when radeons fall extremely short in many cases where people need CUDA cores.

if you're a professional and need a new setup, building a rig for around 2.5-2.9k gets you pretty much the best out there in terms of performance.

don't get me wrong, i'm still waiting - it's really not nvidia's fault that they have sod all competition - pure capitalism at play.

You wouldn't get a 3090ti. You'd get a 3080ti or 3080 which are still highend cards, close to a 3090ti but costs much much less. Or wait.

A 3080 is still over 700 and when we look at productivity, the 4080 is around twice the performance but the 4080 isn't twice the price.
Its actually 50% more gaming performance, less in OPs case as he's not even running 4k for 82% more money, OP isn't buying it for produtivity.

This forum has a tendancy to tar everything with the same brush though and I honestly get the nvidia hate because they're abusing their own situation. Which is good for their shareholders only.

I also understand gamers buying it because even if they aren't making full use of the capabilities now, they may just be future proofing their experiences like with next gen VR that I'm sure these cards will really come into their own. And if the cards carry on this trajectory whose to say that the 4080 or other 40 series will be discounted any considerable amount over the next 2+ years? And if design studios are buying up these cards then how tf is racing sim Simon gonna be affecting whether nvidia drop prices or not? Even if you settle for a lesser, older card, you're not getting better value for money in many situations! Or if you are, it is negligible.

So yeah, card is expensive and I do get the hate but it is getting silly now imo. The 4080 is a solid purchase for many people esp around the 1100-1200 mark.

Not a great value card but still less than paying out for a 4090. Q1 will be interesting once all the competition is out. Value is a very personal thing, how many have all the gear and barely use it? Happy Christmas :)

The only futureproofing for this card is buying one is guaranteeing in the future you'll be paying £1000+ for mid range cards every generation going forward.

Yep - I feel bad for everyone that was waiting for the 4080 as an upgrade from a 10 or 20-series card but if these cards sell at this price it only gets worse from here on in. The 3080 (at MSRP) was terrific value, the 4080 at MSRP is terrible value.
