Wait to buy the 7900XTX or buy the 6950XT?

But before I get too comfortable into thinking I've ordered everything and I can just sit back and chill while I wait for the components to arrive, did make a bad choice in going for 6400 DDR5? It seemed like a good deal at the time?

amd have stated that ddr5 6000mhz is where you should aim for amd 7000 series as any faster may cause you to loose performance or you may get odd behavoir booting or within windows, plus games may freeze and crash, i have ddr5 6000mhz dominators expo kit, a 5600mhz 32gb kit will do and upto 6000mhz should really be the max. if i were you i'd send the 6400mhz kit back and exchange for a expo kit in the 5600-6000mhz range.

That's interesting. I wonder why running 64000mhz causes odd behaviour?

Do you think AMD are aware of this and are going to address it in a future bios update?

Can you down clock memory in the bios?

running past 6000mhz makes the memory divider move from a 1:1 ratio to a 2:1 ratio which can play hell with performance, its pretty important not to go past 6000mhz if you can help it, just try to find ram with decent cl timings, 30,32, and 36 will be best, as time goes on amd may allow faster ram to work they did with 5000 series but for now stick to what amd recommend.

a decent 5600mhz kit with cl36 timings https://www.overclockers.co.uk/cart/restore/781e54a16081b6008a541e11a58e9781

you'll have to shop around for 6000mhz as overclockers dont have many kits, most are out of stock :(

Thanks a million bud! I'll get to work on it.

There’s an option in the bios so you can run 1:1 above 6000. Regardless though, not really much gain going higher than 6200Mhz.

Even if I used 6400 would it just automatically under clock (I don't know the correct term) to 6000 and be stable, or does RAM not work that way?

you can yes but you'll need to find what timings would be best to use, out of intrest what 6400mhz do you have/ordered?

I was advised to go for this as it was on special during Black Friday.

Kingston FURY Renegade 32GB (2x16GB) 6400MHz DDR5 Memory Kit

Actually, I made a mistake.. I was told to get 6000 or 6200.. I saw the 6400 at a good price and decided to go for it before doing the due diligence.

doesn't look like its expo certfited, cl32 is good but you may have boot problems, by all means try it and see how you get on

I should have just listened to the advice and got the 6000 or the 6200. I wasn't thinking.

I did read the specs of the Asus TUF Gaming X670E-Plus WIFI (Socket AM5) DDR5 ATX Motherboard and it did mention that it supported 6400 so.. I'll just wait and see.

my asus rog crosshair x670e extreme is the same 6400mhz max (OC) but i know i'd have issues running that, so i opted for 6000mhz cl 30 dominators instead, running like a dream

I'm sorry to hear that bud.

I personally have gone with Intel which I'm having second thoughts about, but yeah.. I would have said go with like the AMD Ryzen 9 7900 or something like that?

Sure you can upgrade the CPU in a few years time on AMD but the boards cost more while the CPUs won't hold their prices as well on the used market so you lose more on resale value when you come to upgrade.

Going with Intel will need a new board but the current boards are cheaper while the CPUs will hold their prices better so will have better resale value.

All in all both work out around the same net spend in the long run so it doesn't really matter which you go with so just get the best performance right now.

Ouch.. Ok. Expensive lesson learnt. But yeah.. followed your advice and went for the same memory you suggested. That just saved me a huge headache on build day. Thanks! :D

OcUK order arrived yesterday. :D

The memory I ordered from the .co.uk website is shipping from Taiwan. Just got shipping details this morning and is being couriered by DHL. I had no idea that it would be shipped from Taiwan, but at least it was free shipping despite the cost. ;)

With a bit of luck, and all going well I hope to start building by the end of next week.

nice, keep us posted and if you do have any questions or issues report back and we'll see what we can do, odd the rams shipping from so far away, did overclockers not have the kit in stock in the uk store?, no matter though, have you gone aircooling or aio for the cpu?

No. OcUK didn't have stock at the time. Only pre order.

Yeah it is odd it's coming from so far away but greatful that it's on its way and I just gotta be patient. Probably gonna arrive on December 13th.:p

I was lucky to get a Black Friday deal on OcUK for the Corsair 150i aio.

Memory arrived today! :D

I'm looking forward to build day. I'm just mega busy these next couple of days but will hopefully make the time.

I can't believe that it's only less than a week until release day of the 7900xtx as well..

Does anyone know what kind of performance gain one would get if I was gaming on a screen running @ 3440x1440 @ 175Hz 1ms, between the 6900xt and the 7900xtx?

excellent news and not too long to wait for the ram really, regarding the uplift from the 6900xt to a 7900xtx, its tricky to say as its early but from most info out there speculating there should be at least 40% uplift, i'm super stoked as i also run a liquid devil 6900xtu, looking forward to the 7900xtx MBA or a powercolor devil, which ever i can get my hands on really XD

Not to bad of a wait at all tbh.

40% is quite a significant amount. I'm very tempted, but I'm terrible for making a decision. I think I will just wait and see what's on offer at 1400hrs GMT on the 13th.

That's cool to hear that you are committed on getting one on release day. Exciting times. :D
