Is it safe to buy AMD again?

A few years ago I built a 3700x with a 5700XT and, while I've been pleased with the performance for the price (the gpu was about 60% of the price of anything equivalent from nvidia at the time) it was only after I built it that I found all the posts and reddit threads etc about the instability of the GPU.

I get great benchmark results for the spec, can't complain but wow do I get a lot of crashes. Despite all the driver updates since, it's still unstable. Certain things really trigger it, like cutscenes in games, or if I pause a game and then the screensaver comes on (I know, right?). Actual performance while I'm playing is great.

But, I swore I'd never buy a radeon again. Is it safe to? Are the new models stable?

I thought most of the RDNA driver issues were fixed ages back? Yours doesn't sound good though. I've only recently upgraded to an rx6600 and just done the standard software update/install.

The new 7900xt/x appears to have some issues, but likely to be fixed it seems.

The Nvidia price premium is definitely something worth thinking about more than once imo

All the new releases are way overpriced. If you can wait 6 months then I am expecting significant price cuts on 4080/4070ti and 7900xt/xtx. Nv and AMD are unlikely to cut prices before they have rolled out the lower end 4070/4060 or 7800/7700/7600 cards but once they are all released and if sales are slow then expect price cuts.

I have been using a RDNA2 6800 for 18 months and it has been great , no major stability issues at all. I have a RDNA3 7900xtx in my spare pc while I wait for a waterblock and my son has not mentioned any crashes when he games on it and the cooler/temps are totally fine so I got a working cooler.

11% failure rate, if you consider this "safe"

No idea if the xtx coolers had an 11% failure rate but out of all the failures you can have a faulty cooler that the company has admitted to be an issue is the best. If your cooler is affected then RMA the card and get a replacement , it is annoying but there will be no arguing back and forth. It is also only the XTX MBA (Made By Amd) reference cards that are affected , all custom cards and the xt are just fine.

I have no idea why some people seem to have so many issues with AMD cards but I have found them to be no more problematic than Nv cards. What I mean by that is I have had no issues with any of the dozen gpus I have owned from both companies. It is early days for the 7900 cards and already been a couple of driver updates that are fixing the issues that they had, AMD appear to be putting more effort into their drivers than in the past and I would say yes it is worthwhile considering the AMD cards once they have come down in price a bit.
Like I said at the start , all of the new releases are overpriced so best to wait until they are at a more sensible price.

Vega 64, 6700XT and now 6900XT owner here. No issues. You'll learn to ignore certain people who post certain loaded unhelpful comments. One has posted in here already. Shame mods can't do more to stamp them out.

I'd not opt for a new 7 series gpu just yet. Price and immature drivers, although latest drivers have helped fix some issues. MBA XTX cards have recalls. Fault has been identified and cards are being replaced which is good to see.

I'd say it never was unsafe (ignoring the cooler issues with made by AMD reference 7900XTXs), then again I've not had a 5700, but have had various AMD/ATI cards back to the 9700. Most recently had a RX580 and a Vega 56 before my current card.

I'm currently running a RX6900XT with no issues acquired on the Black Friday deal after running a 3060ti for a year. It's working well.

Ironically, I had more problems with the 3060ti than with any of the AMD cards; black screens, stuttering and hitching in video playing through browsers etc. Disabling MPO sorted it, and ironically the same fix worked on a colleagues AMD card (I think it was a 5700 non-XT). No repeat with the RX6900XT on the same box with the same monitor etc with MPO re-enabled. Go figure.

I wouldn't say the 3060ti was a bad card at all, quite the opposite, and it's working with no issues in another machine now. Again, go figure.

It was 2018 upto August right before the 2080 was released. So yep a while ago. Been fine on the whole every since.

i had a reference rx480 and had none of they issues you describe and im running a sapphire pulse 5700 at the moment and have had none of they problems, i get the occasional driver crash but that is completely random and pretty rare.

edit:
just curious what psu are you using and were you using different pcie leads to each socket on the gpu?

the only issue i had that was irritating with my rx480 8gig was watt man would randomly reset so i saved my undervolt profile then loaded it when ever wattman went stupid and that card is still going strong in my dads pc, had this 5700 for about 3 years now :)
