Scratches don't worry me much, although i have eyed up the clear wrap film.
hadn't realised a derailleur guard was a thing ... but maybe I need one of those to protect it, trapezium body of the derailleur has taken some impact on both crashes of last two years, taking right turns ...
and my bib tights

Surely then my theory is even more valid, that there's even less benefit going from the £100 prime wheels i bought with decent tyres up to something Carbon, because they're already a decent step up from the included bike wheels.

Cheers, i've just assumed weight was weight, rather than considering rotational weight and anything else that involves physics :p The main reason to upgrade would likely be to go for a deeper rim regardless of material as it's only 25mm on the Prime wheels i got.

Yeah, the hub was the reason for the switch, the cost to buy the hub was prohibitive on the previous wheels and so it made more sense to buy some user Prime wheels which already had the Sram hub.

The main reason for considering upgrades was coming from a bike with carbon deep 50mm wheels already. So therefore it feels a little like a downgrade in that particular instance on what i have already. It's also why i went this frame over something more aero as i wanted the ability to fit gravel tyres, so having 2 wheelsets which gives me the ability to switch between terrain without having to mess around with changing tyres appeals.
Yes your theory is valid, but I was trying to say you'll not have a massive speed increase over tyre choices on that good quality rim/wheel. You're not exactly going to buy the most rubbish and cheapest £8 tyres you can find, then compare them to a £50+ GP5000 on there. You're more likely to buy a £30-40 tyre to save a few quid to the GP5000, with barely noticeable difference, certainly not as big as they make it sound! ;)

You know how deep 50mm carbons feel and sound, the alloy rims will feel 'a bit sluggish' in comparison. But just remember what you've got them for - saying some costs, something more bombproof for gravel riding and for ease/convenience in future.

Also, first attempt at lunch to install folding tyres after i'd done the rim tape.

Man, is that a pain to do vs normal wired tyres. Think i need to spend some Youtube time to get the right technique!
Defo technique/experience help massively, but also tyre+rim combination can sometimes not help! Am not familiar with how Gravel Kings are, but Prime are known to be quite 'traditional' rims (which usually means tight). Doing it indoors (so the rubber is warm and stretches easier) is a simple one to start with, I've even warmed tyres with a hairdryer in the winter to get them on rims. Just don't also heat the alloy rim as kinda defeats the object... Also hurts your fingers less! 'Massaging' the tyre around the rim also helps - this alongside the bead(s) in the centre channel is invaluable when at the roadside in cold weather. I've a clubmate who can literally mount any tyre on a rim by fingers alone, many years of it has fingers as strong as steel. But also his technique able to massage/roll a tyre around the rim while mounting it. We literally challenge him every time! Professional!

To add my two cents, I had a Giant Defy 1 2014 (with the groupset and finishing kit from a Giant Defy 3 2014) and that had the worst wheels imaginable for someone between 100kg and 115kgs. Always going out of true or spokes breaking. Replaced for some Fulcrum Racing 7's (IIRC) and they was brilliant but, wasn't as big an upgrade in terms of feel/speed compared to moving from the Giant supplied tyres to the GP4000SII. The difference was monstrous!
Totally agree and similar experience with my PR-2 wheels on the Defy 1 2015. Total crap! Especially the tyres they came with. Newer Giant Gavia ones are meant to be kinda ok.

Long shot here, but does anyone have a 90mm road bike stem knocking about spare?

Long story short im trying to gauge improvements to my bike fit myself. Not suffering any issues pain wise on my current setup but do feel a spot over reached on my 100mm stem. Annoying i was right between frame sizes on my current bike and have "made do" since buying it, again without much issue. But want to see if I can improve it further
I actually do. It'll be an alloy Giant 'Connect' which is from my old Defy 1 2015. I took it off and fitted a Richey 100mm when I got the frame warranty replaced in the winter. I'll dig it out this weekend.

My wife’s very lucky I’ve decided the front room is the best location to build it all up!

Good job she’s gone to bed as I watch footy!

How did it go? Apart from the BB? Love the cats look/face! 'WTF' :D

Sounds good. Never sure how much gravel riding there is in the UK vs somewhere like the US
Really depends on location. Fairly limited around here (Hereford) as it's more trails than gravel, so then more muddy/CX type stuff than gravel. More longer forestry type gravel trails in mid & north Wales, quite an abundance there really, but again more mud than gravel being the UK and the usual weather...!

Saw a bloke who lived 20 mins away selling some bontrager velosis shoes, brand new unused in my size for 60 pounds.

Went to see him, tried them on and decided to have them as they were comfy, fit well and were brand new as he had said. He then also threw in some bontrager elite spd pedals and some look keo cleats also brand new as he had no use for them!
Bargains mate, nicely done! Cleats alone are worth £12+!

******* had assumed the crankset would come with a bottom bracket but no such luck.

Hopefully my LBS has them as Merlín is out of stock.
Nope, they may come fitted to a frame but not really with a crankset. Have seen whole groupsets sold with them before, but not cranksets.

That would be super handy mate, no pressure though, just let me know. I'm happy to buy a half decent one when Ican find out if 90mm actually "fits" me better overall on the current setup, I think it will be just the difference I need but only one way to find out!

I was chuffed with the bargains to be honest, the shoes are also MEGA comfy in my initial test and cant wait to give them a test ride.

The pedals (after checking this morning) are lighter than my old banged up 105 - 5800 pedals that I intended to use, so going to stick with the Botranger Elite ones to start with

The shoes weight difference is also significant, not that im a weight weenie at all, but after picking them up I couldn't believe how light they felt so I thought I would weight them.

My pair of old trusty shoes were 820g for the pair (inc clips) and the new ones are 515g for the pair with cleats so that's nice!

The cat was just annoyed at being shouted at for trying to use various spacers/bearings/tools as toys, along with trying to chew everything in sight!

Routing the rear brake hose was a pain as there's a twist in the chainstay which must cause a bit of blockage. The rest has been fairly straight forward so far. Looks like i might get away without cutting the steerer tube, at least for now, there's about an inch above the stem that i've used spacers for.
The only annoying part if that the spacers below the stem are matt black, and above are gloss as it's all i had. Something which will need to change!

Will mount both derailleurs tonight, BB is coming tomorrow, so assuming i can actually get the tyres on i might be able to ride it on Sunday!

Good luck!

There is nothing quite like a first ride on any different or new bike!

Especially when you have built it yourself and wonder how it will go. I built a set of fancy MTB wheels last year for a fair bit of money and I was quite concerned they would break when used in anger. They have held up really well though and have been through bike park wales a couple of times on 130/121mm full suspension so if that doesn't kill them, few things will.

Rapha sale on Sportpursuit is not too bad. I've taken a punt on a GoreTex Pro Team jacket. Ripped my last jacket trying to take it off in Wales last year trying to take it off :(

Anyone have a Garmin 1040? Body is sensing the start of Spring and my brain has clicked in to cycling spend mode.

Just bought a new wheelset that I promised myself last year and now looking to replace my well abused Garmin 530.

I’m in to the Garmin ecosystem as I have a Fenix but the amount of times the 530 has added distance on to my trips due to a bad turn notification or refusal to reroute is maddening so thinking either 1040 or maybe sit on these Karoo 3 by April rumours.

Had a ride out today where the weather took an unexpected turn and had a massive hail and rain storm got back home and washed the bike. When i went to take the rear wheel off to put the bike back onto the turbo trainer the rear derailleur had a bit of lateral wobble when i was starting to take the rear wheel off. I stopped and let the derailleur reset back to its usual position and i noticed that the hanger had a fair amount of movement from the frame where the wheel sits into the frame where its attached. Checking the screw that holds it i noticed the screw wasn't very tight and tightened it and everything seems ok.

This is on my Canyon endurace had it about a year, theres only one screw that holds the hanger to the frame as the screw says only tighten to 1nm should i consider taking out the screw and putting some loctite blueon the thread?

Not quite the same, but I went 830 to 1030 and enjoy the extra real estate in screen. Worth the upgrade factoring in both second hand purchases so ~£30 to upgrade.

My bikes almost done. Just waiting on the BB but all derailleurs are on ready and tyres attached and pumped up. Ended up even doing them by hand which I was impressed with myself for!

I've got the 1040, was running the 1000 since it came out. It's a big step up in screen size and options and is a fair bit quicker overall. Still some annoying features but not had any of the garmin issues so many seem to get.

That’ll be the reinforcement I need then, shall probably make a purchase tonight :D

Taking my gravel bike/honorary winter road bike off the turbo for my first outdoor ride since new year as still a bit wintery for the main bike.

Have a sportive in a couple of weeks so aiming to get about 100km under the belt at around 0.65 IF. I’m fully expecting both sets of quads to cramp up around 70-80km given I’ve not been properly out since October. Saltsticks at the ready!

No idea if there are any Garmin bargain prices, but it might be worth scouring eBay before midnight tonight, HotUKDeals site alerted me to a code (JOY15?) that gives 15% (max £75) off a lengthy list of eBay stores.

Some of you may remember the problems I had with creaking last summer. I finally got the rear wheel bearings replaced in around October and it was almost perfect. Well, in the last month, they started back up, getting worse and worse. Annoyingly, just before they made noise, one LBS (my local just having closed down) that fixed my Di2 issue told me the rear bearings were going, but I said to leave them as I half didn't believe them and half just wanted to eek out more milage, knowing I'd not long replaced them.

I'd been talking with one of our club guys who does a lot of maintenance and he was adamant the bearings were fine and had me trying all other sorts of things (thought it was spokes related), but today as we stopped at our usual place (which is also the LBS I mentioned earlier) I decided to ask if they would have time to look at some point in the week. "Bring it in now, we'll take a look". They said straight away they could tell the bearings were knackered. It would take 30 mins and they'd do it for me now...

They did the front and the back. Wow... what a difference. The ride home felt like a new bike, gliding along. It almost felt at times it was accelerating when I wasn't even trying. I wondered if it was a plaplacebo-typeing, but some of the numbers suggest I really was going quicker for less effort. I only checked a few segments, but maybe the one that was the most eye-opening, last month 18.0mph at 289 watts and today 19.3mph at 237 watts!

Might very well be the classic placebo effect of any new bike component creating instant power improvements! We all get it!

Also after some advise from you all. Ive got the opportunity to buy a "garage clearout find" from a friend of a friend who's dad passed away recently.

From what I can make out of the pictures he supplied, its a Cannondale System Six (2007) Ultegra spec with SI chain set.

I already have my bike, but the reason for the interest on this one is to have a whole "project" bike to learn maintenance on as well as a spare for our little "club chub" riding group should anyone be bike-less for whatever reason or want to bring a friend along on a ride.

Based on the images, its going to need a fait bit of work, but wondered what you all thought for the price?

I'm calling tailwind, no bearing damage is worth 100w! A well running wheel hub is a great thing though. :D
I've been trying to tell myself this. Feel slow in recent months and I know the rear bearings feel screwed.... Cero wheels I got in May :/

Cranks seem to keep loosening too.. bit weird. Bottom bracket feels fine when I pull them out but I'll tighten the cranks up and then a month or so later I can feel lateral play.
