Road Cycling

Think I will pull the trigger on the 404s when I get the voucher, also going to buy the parts I need to move to Ultegra Di2 12 speed from my non di2 Ultegra 11 Speed with the remainder of the voucher.

Very happy that the shifting issues on my gravel bike have been sorted by a new chain. In fact, it’s probably the best any bike I’ve owned has shifted.

Bit of adjustment for front mech and all should be good. Mental how a well adjusted bike increases your enthusiasm to ride.

Glorious bike & build mate! #jealous
Thanks! Went on a bit of a lifestyle transformation and was a present to myself for keeping it up over multiple years. Plus it finally made sense to shave a bit of weight off the bike as I wasn’t the limiting factor :D

Also helped that I managed to get it before the price rises by chance and when Sigma were including free Garmin Vectors!

Sounds like a stunning deal all round. Really like specialized frames

Bike insurance, most people adding to home insurance?

Mines for renewal with M&S (Aviva), bikes adds £100 - up to 6k value. Perhaps need to go higher as like for like RRP is now even more than that…

I am with M&S and they were great when I had to claim for my bike. I've stayed with them partly because of that despite rises. Although @Muffin` didnt have the same experience.

The same happened on my house insurance last year, used to add just a few more £s. I'd prefer it on a separate policy but at the time it cost more then my car insurance! (I have since rectified this issue by buying a more expensive and higher risk car.)

Managed to get out 2 days in a row and all things considered am not doing too badly, definitely lost a good amount of power but aerobically not too tragic. I hit near max heart rate up the steepest climb near me and didn't end up in a coughing mess with my lungs burning like I have on any aerobic exercise the past 8 weeks, so I consider that fully recovered from that dreadful cough. It will be a couple of days rest due to high winds, a couple of days of short commutes and then hopefully I can get 2 full weeks of cycling in, weather permitting.

Soooo I just got back from a cycle clubs reliability ride which turned out to be extremely professional and ended up in a 50 man strong rotating peloton. I've not done group rides like this for a few years but remember the old hand signals and so on, everyone was shouting out "pot hole left" "drain left" and so on... I decided to hit the front and do my turn when I noticed some road kill on the road so I shouted "dead thingy left" at which point the peloton fell silent and the guy to my right gave me the look of shame.

I'm just curious to what section of our lycra warriors act did i break this time ?

Haha I shall remember to shout out dead thingy to my wife when I’m out with her.

We went for an exploratory ride today. It’s downhill for about 500m from the place we’re staying and pretty steep. Got to the bottom and realised neither of our bikes were working!

I’d also thrown on some used shoes I’d bought thinking they had Shimano red cleats on and whilst I prefer yellow figured they’d be ok for a quick easy ride. Turned out to be look clears so couldn’t clip in.

My wife’s electric bike just wasn’t giving any power assist at all and the throttle did nothing. The display worked though so obviously not the battery.

Ended in us both walking back pushing the bikes uphill to the house where I began working out the cause.

Turns out My batteries had drained on the derailleurs as I’d not disconnected them on the drive so was stuck in the smallest cog.

And my wife’s brake sensors had shifted so it thought the brakes were on at all times so the motor cut off was engaged.

Luckily both easy fixes but worrying on day 3 when you have the panic you’re both screwed with no bike!

So on my week off, despite the snow, wind and rain, I managed 240 miles. That doesn't include the 80+ involving Top 100 climbs the weekend before too! I've not felt 100% for coming on to 4 to 6 weeks though now. I do wonder if I'm overdoing it, especially as I'm monitoring calories (not crazy, but have dropped about 9lbs since Xmas). I think I'll take it much easier between now and Mallorca (11 days time) and eat a bit more, to try and ensure I hit it with good form. Gotta beat my PB's from last year, but I'll mainly be doing that on determination, not form as it stands...

On another note, for those that like the accomplishments, Simon Warran has just released his Top 100 Climbs of Spain.

I've got the 404's on my madone but with the 11 speed Di2's. Amazing set up and there is very little wheel snatching on the 404's when it comes to wind but it obviously does still happen if the cross wind is bad enough.

Just stuck carbon Rotor Q rings on it as well...mmmmm yummy. Now all i need to do is find a cycling club that will accept my childish mindset...

Went out in the drizzle today for an easy z2 2 hour ride.... shame it was a full on rainstorm with 25km/h headwind for the last hour back home

I’d say so as it looks like your volume since Christmas has been particular high whilst losing some weight.

Suppose if you ‘deload’ before Mallorca you should feel a lot fresher.

Is this for the 312 ? I'm looking to book the 312 up next year. For the ones on here that have done it, did you book entry and accommodation separately or did you do a package ?

I'm just curious to what the best company to go with is.

@UTmaniac well after waiting all those weeks/months for the PBK page to show the R7000 172.5 50/34 in stock and drop price to ~100 (never did)... Saw the Merlin Shimano sales (anyone know why they're doing this? Did they get bought out?), but the R7000 crankset there wasn't on much of a deal... So thought I'd just check the R8000. Found them in stock and only for £150 snapped one up. Great deal! Still in stock now if anyone needs! Best deals I'd seen on them before where £175 on PBK and usual prices over £200 so kinda thought to save myself 75 quid go for the R7000 and switch the rings to my R8000 (as it's only the big ring I need). So to go R8000 for 150 was an easy choice and nice surprise!

Amazingly lucky and well timed! Good work with the lifestyle transformation - keep it up!

I'm half hoping the same will happen for me this year timing wise... Mortgage being paid off... Can save some money for 'myself'. I 'missed' my 40th birthday due to Covid and have not had a new bike for nearly 7 years. Covid/Shortage pricing seems to be dropping and there's talk of inventory surplus in various parts of the industry so we might see some good deals again. Crossing my fingers!

Mines on home, Aviva as underwriters again and similar price - think we find that they want to know the 'number of bikes' and then a named value for any of them over £1000 - which there's only 1. I tend to insure mine for what I paid for it (£1750) and not what it's worth (£4000+) as I consider it's depreciated in value so much since then (6+ years) so I've pretty much written it off value wise, but that value would cover the components on there which are newer and still hold value so really that's what I'm insuring. Due to the price hike on a 'like for like' replacement, I wouldn't spend 4k on what I have now. There's better bikes for less money. But that could also be my mindset... As a commuter and using a far too good bike for it, I consider the costs it's saved me/us from fuel and running the car more or a second car, or even a second bike against it.

That cough is/was the worst mate! Took so long to shift it and just seemed to hang around. I'd say I had maybe 2 weeks without it, yet got a little ill again and it feels like I have it back a bit the last 2 weeks. Just the phlegm/snot and occasional cough morning/evening related to that. I rode through the end of it, which seemed to really help shake it off before (after spending 10 days off the bike through the worst of it).

Hahahaha! Quality. Not enough of them with a sense of humour!

Good to hear! Hope things settle down a bit for you bike wise so few less things to worry about. Work and the rest of the move gone well?

SunVelo are good (if they do the 312, would expect so). Know lots of riders who've ridden with them the last few years. One of the local guys even got into working for them a couple of seasons leading some of the faster rides.

Yeah, it's been good. Already know it's going to be very tough heading back to the UK in June, although the fact we know it's only temporary as we put the house up for sale is going to help.

Currently 19C and sunny. This morning we were up at 7am for an amazing sunset coming up from Denia with our coffee on the terrace, before heading into the local town to pick some food up at the market, before getting back to my desk for 9:30.

I think the hardest thing was getting into the "work" mindset on Monday morning. Other than the odd short business trip, i've never worked anywhere other than an office or at home in the UK, so it's been tough reminding myself i'm not here on a holiday.

Crazy how many cyclists are out and about too. Not seen any in the evening though, so makes me wonder if it's safe, given how dark it is and how narrow/windy the roads are.

What's everyones thoughts on Hookless Wheels... My Cycle2Work Voucher will be going to wheels this year so looking for a set from a place that take the horrible Halfords voucher - Zipp's are top of the current list at around 1600 for 404's

Not much to say. Seem to work really well. Main downside is that you are a little more limited on tyre choice. I'm very happy with my Zipp 303 firecrests.

Think @Junglist might have the 404s

Yep, 404FC and I'm really happy with them. I've got them with the schwalbe Pro One TLE and setting them up was no more difficult than regular tubes.

From my previous post about cycling at night, i asked in a local facebook group to see if there were any specific reasons for not seeing many people out at night. Certainly wasn't expecting this answer
