I found it on a fringe web site, so can't cite any newsworthy links I'm afraid. I'm not sure if this really is a thing, so thought I'd drop it in GD as I'm not intelligent enough to put my points across in SC :p

It's a form of identity politics (which I think have gone far enough as it is), where an able-bodied person identifies as disabled. They'll even go the length of maiming themselves such as amputating a limb or damaging their eyes to cause them to become life-long disabled. It's called trans-ablism but I don't think it falls under LGBT because there is nothing sexual about it.

What are your thoughts?

A couple of things for me:

1. Whey should the NHS fund operations on people who are purposely disabling themselves? At least if a smoker gets lung cancer or an alcoholic gets liver cancer (both self-inflicted), then they have paid some taxes from buying cigarettes/alcohol. I'm not validating it, but at least there is some mitigation because they have paid the taxes from the substances that they're addicted to.

2. Disability isn't a choice. I came from a healthy family, but I was born with genetic mutations which have nearly zeroed my eyesight and hearing. I have been in receipt of DLA for all of my life (previously called attendance allowance and is now called PIP). I can't have a family because my defects are dominant even with today's gene therapy. If I had the choice, I would waiver my benefits, have normal eyesight/hearing and start a family. Again though, I don't have that choice.

3. Will these disability pretenders be able to claim PIP?

Morons gonna moron

As you say, my wife is disabled, and would do pretty much anything if it meant having a regular healthy body.

Saying this, it's sometimes annoying being 6'3, maybe i should apply for some bone shortening surgeries :D

Bit harsh TBH.

Body dysmorphia, like gender dysmorphia is a mental illness and those genuinely suffering from it need help. I'm not suggesting lopping off body parts is the answer, but it cannot be ignored.

I also realise there are those that use these conditions as a way to take the p*ss and use loopholes.

Surely this is self-fulfilling? Any seriously considering maiming themselves must already have some level of mental illness/disability, and are therefore already technically disabled.

In a strange turn of events, I actually mean that genuinely rather than in the standard flippant insulting "lol they're mental" way! They need medical help, rather than being laughed at or it being accepted, it's no different to when someone decides to take a razor blade to their leg, just on a far more extreme scale.

There are some total degenerate nutters about, I read this with disgust this morning in the online Guardian:

A man accused of carrying out castrations on other men and broadcasting the footage on his “eunuch maker” website has appeared in court.
Marius Gustavson, 45, along with eight others, is alleged to have performed extreme body modifications, including the removal of penises and testicles.

The procedures were filmed and uploaded to the website he ran and subscribers would pay to watch, Westminster magistrates court heard on Wednesday.
Gustavson, who is originally from Norway, is said to have been the ringleader in a wide-ranging conspiracy, involving up to 29 offences of extreme body modifications, the removal of body parts, the trade in body parts and the uploading of videos.

A total of nine men appeared in courts in central London and Wales on Wednesday over the alleged six-year plot, which is said to have brought in about £200,000 in income.
Gustavson, from Tottenham, north London, is charged with conspiracy to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent between 1 January 2016 and 1 January last year and five counts of causing GBH to five alleged victims.
The GBH charges include the removal of a man’s penis, the clamping of another’s testicles and the freezing of a leg, which required amputation.
He is further charged with acquiring or possessing criminal property, making an indecent image of a child and distributing an indecent image of a child.
The court heard Gustavson, who appeared in the dock using a wheelchair, has had his own leg, penis and nipple removed.
He appeared alongside Peter Wates, 65, from Croydon, south London, who is charged with conspiracy to cause GBH with intent.
Wates is alleged to have been involved with nine of the 29 incidents while the Romanian national Ion Ciucur, 28, who works in a hotel in Gretna Green, Scotland, is said to have been involved in two.
Ciucur, who appeared separately, faces the same count of conspiracy to cause GBH and all three men were remanded in custody ahead of their next appearance at the Old Bailey on 19 April.
Three other men, named as David Carruthers, Janus Atkin and Ashley Williams on the indictment, appeared in Newport magistrates court, south Wales, charged with being involved in the same conspiracy.

They will appear at the same court on the same date for a plea hearing.
Nathaniel Arnold, 47, from South Kensington, west London; Damien Byrnes, 35, from Tottenham, north London; and Jacob Crimi-Appleby, 22, from Epsom, Surrey, also appeared at Westminster magistrates court on Wednesday, each charged with a single offence of causing GBH with intent.
Arnold is alleged to have removed Gustavson’s nipple, Byrnes is accused of removing his penis and Crimi-Appleby is accused of freezing his leg, requiring amputation.
They will also appear at the Old Bailey with their co-defendants next month. None of the men have entered pleas to any of the charges.
All of the alleged victims are said to have been part of a society in which people willingly undergo extreme body modification.
The practice is linked to a subculture where men become “nullos”, short for genital nullification, by having their penis and testicles removed.

It’s actually very insulting to disabled people.

It trivialises disability.

If they do it to themselves, they should be banned from ever claiming disability benefits.

I've said things like this for a long time. I also feel the same for people who utilise disabled spaces legally whilst not really needing them for their conditions.
Just because you're entitled to something doesn't mean you have to use it when it's more advantageous for someone who is worse off.

I'm not exactly comfortable with the NHS doing operations to mutilate genitals in the hope of achieving a better mental state but that's a thing. They will have side effects from the surgery and the rest of the treatment to imitate what they wanted, for life.

If that can fly then other body mutilation in the hope of a better mental state for the patient is different because?

It's not different at all...

"Just a bit off the top today, please."

Looks like I was late to the party if this has been known for a few years now.

Also, interesting debate that mental health has been raised. I didn't see it as self-harming in the traditional sense (cutting yourself etc), but now @Haggisman mentions it, I can see it now in a more extreme case (quoting his word extreme).

Also echoing @robfosters that it is trivialising disability.
