Road Cycling

@ANDARIAL as you've been around as long as I have, can I ask what drew you into this thread to drop that comment? Legitimate query, if it where a newbie I'd flag (either mentally to myself and ignore, or for admins) as a 'Troll' and one of the anti-cycling brigade just trying to stir things up! But I know you're not a Troll :)

Was it just an 'off hand' comment on your way through looking at a nice picture? Your only post in this sub forum for 12+ months (couldn't be bothered to look back further, but don't recall you usually frequenting here).

Haha, oooops!

Your pure muscle mass is greater than me (76kg total!). Impressive! ;)

As (rough numbers) your MM is near 70% so your 'fat content' being towards 30%, probably very easy to trim that down. But also consider you'll 'lose size' by converting some of that to muscle as you ride more without necessarily trimming weight. Muscle is heavier than fat...!
Just browsing and liked the pic.thought that it looked a bit dangerous to my eyes that the guy was cycling in the middle of the road
Old cyclist here myself and I always try to keep left on roads :)

This is what I’m trying to say. If I moved from current 28% to 20% with 30% muscle loss I’d be around 100kg anyway!

I suspect at 100KG I’d feel the benefit on the hills.

Do you boys not have bone, organs and skin? :p

Just bags of fat and muscle.

I can tell you know, that would be a much more dangerous place for the cyclist to be :p As has been mentioned of course, you can often see a long way up the climb, I'm sure he's perfectly safe.

I was going to mention, mine says 4% of my weight is bone.

...and I'm looking to plan more!!! :p

I'm off to Girona again in June and I've just been made Chairman of the John Lewis Partnership cycle club and I'm looking to plan a trip in September or October!

Any ideas for this? I'd like to go somewhere new. (Spain would be a bonus to practise my Spanish :D)

Gran Canaria has been mentioned, someone else said they'd prefer closer/mainland Spain. From a quick google I like the look of Costa Daurada and Costa Almeria.

Maybe I should really post this in the Cycling Hols thread...

Obviously i'm biased but surely Denia/Calpe area should be in there, it seems to be a haven for pro cycling teams and i've often sees teams riding around in groups of 20 with cars following for support in the last few weeks.

A decent amount of climbing and a good mix of mountains/coastal roads. And easy access from either Alicante or Valencia airport.

EDIT - Awesome work on being made Chairman. That's brilliant :D

Also, not sure if it's just me, but Spanish cyclists seem to be miserable compared to back in England. I generally always give a nod/hello and in the UK i'd say the vast majority respond. Here i'd put it at 50% at most.

I will caveat this by acknowledging that i understand that the majority of cyclists are probably ex-pats or people on holiday.

In other news. I have diagnosed the annoying creak/twang noise on my bike to some spokes rubbing on the rear drive side. Have dropped a bit of lube onto them to hopefully mean they glide against each other as opposed to rub. Although one is looking a bit bent. Annoying as the wheels were the only part of the build where i went second hand, although they seem to function fine.
I did however recently read that i can reclaim the VAT on any purchases i make over here, so that's potentially a 21% discount :D

I think the tricky thing is most of Spain could be considered as amazing cycling area

That's very true i guess.

If you wanted further. On one of my many views of A New Life in the Sun, the current season had a couple who setup a cycling holiday business in Greece. That looked amazing.

I thought Calpe area was quite dull tbh, you had to ride so far to get any serious climbs in, which is fine for the pros but doing 150km rides every day is just not doable for me. That's why the islands are so great as nothing is ever that far away.

I think I'm jinxed when I come to stay at my mum's. Drove 20 minutes out and started just a short 46 mile ride, but 6 miles out... my freehub broke... again! It broke back in June 2021 and I got a new one fitted. Can it be something I'm doing wrong? I'm just hoping I can get it fixed in time for the long easter weekend. How easy is it to change yourself? I've found a site that has them in stock...

Depends on the wheels but 90% of the time it's pretty easy to change a freehub. For some like DT Swiss you literally just pull the freehub off after removing the push-fit end caps. Others like Campag/Fulcrum you'll need 2x5mm allen keys to remove the end nut but still fairly easy.

It gets more difficult when you start trying to replace bearings in the freehub which I've done a number of times with Campag as they just don't last and I got fed up of paying £60 for a new freehub.

I am looking at getting a rear light for the bike, however due to me being short and having a topeak saddle bag there isn't really any seatpost left for me to attach it to so im looking for a light that i could clip on the back of the saddle bag. Seen that there is a few topeak ones that would work by cliping on the front of the bad but the reviews seem to criticise there not very bright. Anyone got any suggestions of something that might be a bit brighter and could clip on the front of the bag?

So, the local shop up here didn't have a freehub, but they actually managed to put mine back together. I've ordered a new one to get fitted back in London, but had a lovely ride in the sun this afternoon. The guy mentioned someone had used rather thick grease on the freehub, which he changed for some kind of oil. I don't know if it was a factor, or just I am well rested and on form but I had one of my fastest solo 40 mile rides ever!

Also, I'm thinking of getting another bike and demoting my Canyon to be a winter hack. If I'm after carbon, disc, Di2, endurance type riding position, somewhere around £4k to £6k maybe, what do people suggest? The guy in the shop suggested a Giant Defy or a Specialised SL7.

Could get an exposure and the saddle rail mount potentially? Bag clipped ones are prone to falling off unfortunately.
