According to the 72nd, Wagner had a breakthrough elsewhere in Bakhmut itself and pulled their forces to reinforce that push expecting the 72nd to plug the gap, but the 72nd had no infantry there to do so, mostly artillery and engineering units - even the officers were having to drive armour, etc. to try and defend against Ukraine's assault, Ukraine saw the gap and launched an assault.
Not sure how much is excuses but so far the evidence seems to support it.

I don't think anyone would ever bother to bomb Stevenage, it's already a **** hole, it would be a total waste of good bombs, lol!

It would make some sense for the counter attack to start around Bakhmut. Russian forces mostly in one places, exhausted, morale suffering from seeing thousands of their friends die and then Ukraine sends in fresh well equipped troops armed with new toys And at their strongest. The Russians have also had less time to dig in as they been blowing everything up. Ukraine also breaks the back of the Russian army/Wagner and if correct they might not need to retake much more land. The effect of Russian prestige, morale and combat power would be devastating. OFC might just be wishful thinking on my part.
Whatever happens, we need to continue to supply Ukraine like ****.

There is no other way really where this might end any time soon or in some kind of least worst way. Obviously real world training and logistic bottlenecks but still.
