AMAZON'S LORD OF THE RINGS MMO THREAD.

Got no problem with an MMO being a grind, most MMOs are, my issue with New World always was (and still is) that its just a very poor MMO, lacking in most of the features that ought to be in an MMO imo.

For me, its one of those "MMOs" which is for people who never got to be around during the golden age of MMOs (the pre-2004 era) and so never got to play MMOs like UO, Daoc, EQ1, AC1 and SWG and as a result unfortunately arent aware of just how much can actually be in an MMO or how good they truly can be.

The MMO genre used to be my favourite genre of gaming (back in the pre2004 days) but they are so dumbed down now and its maddening that MMOs in 2023 actually have less features that ones from 25 years ago. Thats regression rather than progression.
Do you play Mortal Online 2? It's an Ultima Online spiritual successor.

Dont think I ever tried that one, meant to but something else came along and took all my gaming time and then I never ended up going back to check out MO
That's the thing though everybody talks about those early days hardcore MMOs but nobody wants to play that kind of MMO nowdays.

I do.

I should also say though that it wasnt being "hardcore" that made UO, Daoc, AC1, SWG etc great MMOs, it was the features in them. Features that many MMOs are now missing these days... things like shared dungeons rather than instanced dungeons, penalties for death, housing that is actually in the gameworld not instanced, player owned ships, viable classes which involve zero combat at all, even really basic stuff like being able to sit in a chair not "on" a chair and many many more, the original MMOs like UO had so much more depth to them, so many more features that were geared to (shock, horror) roleplay in a roleplay game. So much more that you could do other than quest/kill/loot (UO of course didnt even have quests). The newer MMOs are just so dumbed down, so lacking in features, they are the Michael Bay of MMOs

SWG, what a game, until it was ruined by SoE. The player housing and towns system has never been beaten. SWGemu has servers running preCU, hopped on a while back and had a blast, plenty of people playing still.

In partnership with Embracer group to be developed by the team that brought you New World!

Let's hope it's better than that, and that tripe TV show!

Hello past me.

Aaaaaannnnndddd it's gone!

In hindsight, AGS + Embracer group - what could go wrong?

I was never interested in NW, but the early meming sure was fun, very sorry to see it die though, many people enjoyed it, and people have lost their jobs because product x can't make all the money in the World, and because AGS wanted money now it never had a real chance to survive long-term, as they put it out 2 years early.

How many more nails in the coffin of the western MMO do we have left, before the lid is shut forever?

I don't see any hope for a western MMO, or probably any MMO, joining the current pantheon of current long-term, very succesful MMOS liike WOW, OSRS, FFXIV GW2, ESO, EVE etc (wther you like those games or not doesn't matter) - the genre is on it's absolute rear end.

Just look at how old all those games are, it makes terrible reading for the future.

I still play LOTRO, have done for 18 years, but was intrigued by what this would have brought to the table, even though I suspect it wouldn't have been amazing. I dabbled with New World and thought the game engine was great and looked fantastic albeit the gameplay loop was very repetitive and didn't hold my interest very long, but it's a shame to see it die as it's not great for the world of MMO's.

Only other title I have a slight interest in is Star's Reach, but that's still in early access development.
