Road Cycling

Wednesdays ride reminded me that as much as I like the quality of my Rivello bib shorts... they really don't suit me in the seat area!

Any recommendations for bib shorts up to £70 max and must be from Wiggle (as I have a voucher :o ) would be gratefully received!

I've got Altura and DHB bib tights that I get on OK with. Altura Endurance Bib Shorts seem like a possible (I can live with the £2 over budget... just ;) ) but I'm pretty much picking blind. I also like Endura stuff but have only used their MTB shorts and jerseys.

Did we ever get beyond curiously asking about a OCUK ride out? Lost a lot of motivation recently and having something like to look forward to would help get the miles in.

I would love to, I just don't know how much I can commit to it with the nippers. Plans are loose these days.

I'm up for it, even if it's just 3 or 4 of us, it might be nice. It needs to take in one of the UK Top 100 climbs to help with my target for the year :D

Anyone with a suggestion?

Can I coerce you down here with the cheddar climb? Lol though you're pace scares me

A group of you could possibly make good use of booking a villa at Longleat Center Parcs, it's not always super expensive to stay there and you can safely keep your bikes in the villa (I regularly did it in recent years).

This would give you access to lovely lanes and climbs locally including #103(?) by Longleat safari and Kingsettle Hill by King Alfred's Keep, plus a good day out to Mendips delights including Cheddar; Burrington and Draycott Steep (did it myself on 29ered fatbike in Nov '17).

We go to Longleat almost annually and I've loved it even more since getting into cyling in the last six years, might be doing family hol there again in September, hoping my long covid recovery is in full swing by then after recent setbacks and being told I have to cut right back on daily duration and intensity for now.

I’m looking to get a bike gps computer as my phone battery is declining and a 90minute ride in bright sun gives range anxiety. I don’t have any brand specific equipment that would narrow choice (stages smart bike, wahoo HR strap).

It will be mainly road riding.

I have seen the new Garmin 540/840 series which look promising. I really liked the look of the Karoo2, but it seems like there are issues with elevation being exaggerated giving terrible data, which is a shame as the screen and quality otherwise look amazing.

I did consider the 1040 as it is only slightly more than the 840 as after having my iphone, all the screens are a bit small. Do you actually notice or is it something people adapt to? My eye sight is fine if that matters.

The Wahoo Roam seems ok, but from reviews seems to lag behind the newer 540/840.

Does anyone own either series? I am really keen for the climb mode as living in the chilterns there are a lot of hills. Anyone have views of touch screen or not? Many thanks

I don't have either but I have the 830 and its a great device in general. I think Garmin still have the edge over all their competition despite the fact their updates are lazy at best. I would love a 1040 but I just can't justify the cost. The touch screen on the 830 works great so perhaps you could save yourself a few quid and go last gen. Depends how much that extra cost matters.

A chat amongst a group with both Garmin and Wahoo recently, we kind of landed on maybe Garmin has slightly better features, maybe Wahoo is slightly more reliable.

I've got four pairs of Endura Pro SL bib shorts in the long leg version.

Depending on what size you need (both in the short and pad size), Wiggle have the standard length for £75 which is a steal IMO and only a fiver over budget...

I'm hovering over the buy button on an Edge 1040 at the moment with it only being £30 more than the new 840. Bigger screen and longer battery life are more important to more than size / weight.

My Edge 800 is 10 years old at the end of this year and the USB port is going now (takes 10+ attempts to get Windows to recognise it to sync rides). I'd hope to get many years out of a new computer, so I'm put off buying "old technology" such as the 830 or 1030+. The 1030+ isn't getting the new Climbpro features IIRC, so already getting left behind. I've spent ages looking at the Karoo and Wahoo. I wasn't sure what the future was for Wahoo with their financial difficulties but last week the founder bought them back (see here). I am invested in the Garmin eco-system though (with a Garmin watch). Mrs Chris also has a Garmin watch, so being able to use things like the Garmin live tracking would be good (which will save my running OutdoorActive on my phone to provide tracking).

Far less eventful club social on saturday (after several punctures and a wrecked bike last week). I had a good legs and the weather was GLORIOUS! Hilly route and was nice to boss it, smooshing any climbs I wanted and the legs just kept going. Bounce back into form for me and a bit of a 'leg finder' as felt I was starting to plateau a bit. Including cramping last Tuesday while Zwifting (been months or maybe even a few years since I properly cramped). But putting that down to hydration as didn't sweat much and with a short sprint race followed by a hilly iTT I'd gone all in on the Sprints first race to bag points... So hopefully that's me working back into an upwards curve, just in time for a jolly out to The Tumble in a couple of weekends time!

DHB are ok, but many years since I rode them, Altura always been a similar level to them. Would say to look at Endura as have several friends who rate them (FS260) and would consider them better quality than the other 2. But going that £70 price range I'd also consider Sportful or Castelli if you can find the right colour & size combo also in stock (site is a nightmare). Maybe even the Endura Pro SL. They've got some Le Col around that price too (just out of stock).

But if I was spending £75 on shorts I'd be getting them elsewhere than Wiggle, probably more Rapha Core, although they've not been in a sale for a while and now £110 (not worth it, but at 75-80 they are).

We didn't! Someone put some dates & ideas in!

I've got no Sportives or such planned. Must be some local ones I can prob find dates for, several brewery supported one around here. Probably up for almost anything which is in a reasonable couple of hours from me (a bit rubbish as I'm over an hour from the M5 south of Birmingham)! Can't do end of July. Can only do weekends & unlikely to do a nights stay somewhere!

Wahoo every time for me now. I've owned 3 previous Garmin head units, none of them lasted 2 years before being worthy of the bin (500, 800, 810). Support was dire/non-existant. Bought the first Wahoo head unit, the ELEMNT, on a bit of a whim. It was cheaper than 2 of my previous garmin head units and thought I'd not get on with it not having a touchscreen and it being driven by an app on my phone. Converted within a week of using it. Has out lasted all my Garmin head units combined. Bought on 30/12/2016 and still going strong! Not without it's own quirks and issues, but they're far less than any of the Garmins I've owned. It still gets updates and new features even now and although I'd like a colour or bigger screen at times, have no need to change or upgrade it anytime soon.

Add some of us and get yourself in the OCUK club! Don't know how much @touch is riding anymore but he's admin. Think anyone can join though?

Sounds about right. Garmin tend to innovate, break it multiple times over several iterations, drop it, then bring it back, then the others copy and make it reliable and standard.

(which will save my running OutdoorActive on my phone to provide tracking).
Worth noting I'm unsure what the tracking is like on Wahoo, haven't seen anything about it but not a function I use ('LiveTrack'). There used to be something on there so you could 'see' other Wahoo users related to it, but it needed the smartphone app active so expect LiveTrack the same. I never ride with my app open on my phone as zonks the phone battery! Hardly ever sync mine to my phone app to be honest, little head unit happily uploads its rides to Strava/Komoot/TP/RWGPS/Google Fit directly most of the time...! ;)

Only KOM i have is from doing a charity race around an airport runway. Once i completed the ride I was surprised to find segments on it but there was. I was showing second with the top spot doing 300 km/h or something stupid. I would take a guess that someone left their Garmin on whilst taking a trip away on a lear jet lol.. Luckily i reported it and strava deleted it. true story.

(i have no idea how fast a lear jet takes off but it was something stupid like that.)

I'm just amazed that Strava doesn't have a "this is almost certainly ********, can you please confirm you want this logged" functionality. I doubt all these people are trying to cheat because their times are stupid. The core of a good lie is a kernel of truth and a 60 something dude is not putting out 550w over 130 km.

I did think to myself was this guy really trying to cheat but i stalk my strava like anything so would have seen a crown, although the top tens ( I have a few) i reckon 50 percent of them i had to reload the ride back on to strava to show it.

I don't know... they reckon they have worked out how to pick up a E bike but cant spot a jet engine lol.

I wonder if its a bit like social media where a bit of controversy and whinging is good for them ultimately. Keeps people talking about it and arguing which keeps engagement high.

I got a pair of the endura bib shorts and they fit really nicely. I used their sizing and sit bone measurements to approximate pad size and not disappointed. I was concerned regarding the strap length at 1.89m, but really nice fit.

I once forgot to stop my Garmin at the end of a ride, so I think it auto-resumed once my bike was on the back of the car. When I sync'd the ride, Strava did suggest to me it looked like part of the ride was in a car and let me crop it.

I have a heart rate monitor that I use for rough exertion data and I feel like it quite dramatically overrates my effort. I'm sure the heart rate data is correct but it puts my rides in higher zones than it feels. I just did a nice and easy ride where I was basically never out of breath, legs never really felt much effort and it still suggested I spent most of the time in zone 4 and quite a bit of time in zone 3

On a slightly related note, I think this was one of the first rides I have ever done where I took it completely leisurely. It was very nice. Can recommend. Gives you much more time to admire the scenery and decide which houses I want to buy when I win the lottery. It was surprisingly fast as well all things considered.
