Are used graphics cards risky?

Had five second hand GPU’s, two were B-Grade (effectively the same thing) 1080ti’s the other two were a 780ti and 1080ti both bought from the MM here, the 5th was a 2080ti I got from Faceache marketplace the other night for a friend, £200! - he’s had it looping benchmarks for the last 12 hours without any issues and is understandably delighted.

Of course there’s a risk, but, a huge potential saving.

Let me put it another way, I have no intention of buying another new GPU.

One of them (a Zotac 1080ti Amp Extreme) yes, the second an MSI Lightning X which I have to this day a while later.

but the latest cards are more efficient. 4060ti offers 3060ti performance but pulls 40-50w less power.

The 4060Ti would be using the newer power connector, not the older PCIe 8 Pin connector that's more universal and most PSU's (even older ones) have. Given that OP only had a 600W PSU to spare, I seriously doubt that PSU was going to be rocking a 12VHPWR connector, so either they would need to risk grabbing converter cables, or grabbing a new PSU, all of which is added expenses and more uncertainty.

Then of course, as I already showed, the RX580 can easily handle Baldur's Gate 3 with all settings on at 1080P at 45-60FPS, IF the CPU can drive it (7950X could, 4930k could not). So there's no need to go overboard with the latest and greatest, when you won't even be able to make the most of it (and it's being put into an out of date system that's not going to get upgraded). So anything in a 3060 or less class, with warranty in mind (if they are concerned about that) should be the ceiling they go for, with anything else inside the gen before that to be a viable second hand purchased. All within the budget (and choice) of what OP feels they can go with depending on how lucky they are feeling with grabbing second hand (that'll work right off the bat) or new (in case they feel like they might be getting lemons).

If purely by going by efficiency standards, obviously there'll be a difference, but that's not really the goal of OP I believe; who appeared to be after most economical approach (with enough safety and assurance purchased GPU won't be "too" ineffective soon after).

Surprisingly, a lot of the 4060 Ti / 4070 cards still use 8 pin. I'd expect the 4060/4050 to all be 8 pin.

No idea, but for caution, I prefer not to assume that it would come with it. But cool if it does.

I'm looking at the wrong cards then, all the ones I've looked at (by chance) happens to list the 12VHPWR as requirement. :-/

Also, whilst we all know to be extra secure with the pins, some may not have caught on yet about it. Although I'm not expecting 4060 Ti's to burst to flames like the 4090's though.

Again, given OP's caution over the GPU, thought it would be best to stay within that thought process.

I've bought 2-3 used GPUs. One had issues and I had to get a refund. Overall probably not worth it outside of the MM.

i dont think they should, less likely to be a scam sale on either side if you have time and effort into the account to lose

Why?

It's meant to be something earned and it also means there's less chance you'll be ripped off as the main reason people are there probably isn't just to take advantage of the MM.

Sure that's inconvenient for honest people who don't post much or just found the place but it's probably a good trade off otherwise?
