Just what is NVIDIA up to?

Gen on gen Nvidia increase the MSRP by near 70%, AMD keep theirs the same, but its AMD who are too expensive and need to reduce the price.
AMD didn't keep their prices the same though, AMDs 3080 competitor was £600, AMDs 4080 competitor was £1050, names might have changed but you're still paying hundreds of pound more for the same tier of product, infact its a slightly lower tier as a 4080 is now build on the 103 which would have been a 70 class last gen.

Profit margins have been steadily growing for both companies. However one of two is also constantly losing marketshare.

Actually AMD have just published thiers, profits are down, Nvidia..... profits growing massively....

7900xtx to 4080 is £210 difference currently

Considering the 3080 to 4080 hike is ridiculous shouldn't it be much bigger difference ? Think some are fooled by naming and not actual performance?

Nvidia have AI though to fall back on, AMD should be going after gaming sales, this gen was a massive opportunity with Nvidia's daft pricing, all AMD had to do was price the new stuff the same as last gen and I don't mean by name but the performance tier +20% for inflation and they would have cleaned up.

I was really upset at 4080 pricing and would have got AMDs equivalent card even just to spite Nvidia if it was released for under £800, but instead I'm buying neither.

I think the 7900XT is a rebranded 7800XT, to be kind perhaps with a little extra cherry on top, @LtMatt

Its started out $900, too much, its now $750, IMO that's ok, by ok i mean ok, not great.

Not an excuse, you're making excuses for Nvidia ffs...... and even then, AMD are not Intel, RocM is coming a long nicely and Mi300 gets launched in a couple of months... and its also no excuse.

Actually i'm distracted by what just doesn't matter, AMD's profit for the last quarter, $27m, compared to about 0.5bn $ in the same quarter last year.

Gaming dGPU's...... guess what, they made a loss, Nvidia dGPU's, huge profits.

I would argue the 7900xtx should be 7800xt, after all it's the 4080 competitor

Like 6800xt was to 3080

But that would mean 7800xt priced at £889.99 , yeah call it 7900xtx might confuse people to our own price increase

Regardless it was still a £400 or 67% price increase over the previous gen for the same performance tier of product while the 4080 had an 83% increase.
The 7900 XTX replaced the 6900 XT. They were launched at the same price for 45-50% higher performance.

I take your point about the 7900 XT vs the 68000 XT though and think that is fair.

TBH I couldn't care less, I had £800 for either company that offered me 80 class performance and neither wanted it, the fact that Nvidia is making big profits while AMD is struggling shows who needed it the most so AMD can only blame themselves.

If its a 4080 competitor it should be about $1000 given the 3080 was $700 vs $650 for the 6800XT.

The 6900XT competed with a 3090 though while the gap between a 7900XTX and 4090 is similar to that of a 6800XT and 3090 while the 7900XT has a similar gap to a 4080 that the 6800 had to a 3080.

The 6800 was $579 vs $699 for the 3080, so by that measure the 7900XT should be $900 given the 3080 was 20% more expensive than the 6800.

$1000 is still overpriced
ideally 4080 should have been £750-£800 ? , and AMD would have called the 7900xtx the 7800xt for like £650 - £700 ?

I was only prepared to goto £750 and performance of 4080 / 7900xtx

But neither are getting my money this generation

AMD do not set prices, they aren't the ones with that power, placing that bourdon on them will never work. It just encourages Nvidia to ramp pricing up, which is exactly what they do.

AMD do not set prices

Outrageous that they can't sell a 79XTX(or whatever no. you want to call it)for 4070 level pricing to gain market share.

I should have just bought another 4070(or whatever no. you want to call it) instead of my 79XTX, that would have shown AMD Radeon Technologies a right good lesson.:p
