Hi,
I'll keep it short and sweet.I've budgeted about £200 for a CPU,Mobo, and RAM.I was looking at B550 boards, but i'm confused with all the other boards. Like A520,A320,B450 etc. What's the best board for me,and whats the best possible CPU and RAM i can fit?
16GB is fine,i already have a case,OS etc. Not interested in M.2 atm,but obviously need at least one slot for future proofing. Thanks.

Thanks very much. The rainforest has this for £69.99 i'm thinking of just getting that.

ASUS PRIME B450M-A II

I was looking at the 4500 actually, but is it not severley cut down in cache? Also the RAM i was looking at was capable of 4400mhz OC.
These are the other boards i was looking at:Gigabyte A520M DS3H ASUS PRIME A520M-K Too confusing man.

The 4500 isn't ideal and the 5600 is obviously a much nicer 'starter' CPU, but you're on a tight budget here.

Also the RAM i was looking at was capable of 4400mhz OC.

I can't help you there, I don't know which CPUs/boards are better for such overclocks. I don't think A boards 'officially' support CPU overclocking though (unofficially seems to be another story), so there's that.

The B450 and A520 boards aren't all that different, I'd expect at least one PCI-E 3.0 M.2 slot and PCI-E 3.0 graphics.

B450 is theoretically higher-end (even though it is a previous gen), so you may find that it has more (or higher spec) USB ports, better VRM cooling/VRM spec and higher-end audio/LAN.

From what I can see, the first two are true for the B450M-A II vs A520M-K, but the LAN and audio are the same?

Advantages of paying more for the B550 board I linked you:
- It has 2x M.2 slots.
- It has PCI-E 4.0.
- It has 4 memory slots (A520 boards might only be 2, it depends)

Motherboard is less important than the CPU.
B550 has more features, PCI-E Gen 4 for GPU and M.2 but a A520 / B450 would be fine as well.
Only issue may be an older board may need a BIOS update before the CPU is recognised.

CPU, I would go with Ryzen 5500 / 5600 as a minimum unless you can pick up a used 3600 / 3700X.

Memory ... 16GB of 3200 CL16 - You aren't going to be over clocking the memory any substantial amount. 3600 CL16 is ideal for Ryzen 5xxx, however 3200 is cheap and the performance difference is neglible vs buying a cheaper CPU.

If you shop around you should a few £££ over budget with the 5600, and under budget with the 5500.

M.2 drives are CHEAPER than SSDs and about 10 times faster.

Not using them, as all motherboards made this decade support them would be foolish.

Not all B550s are alike. However almost all of them will support 1 on the mobo and 1 in each x4 or x8 slot. Gen3 at least.

If you intend to use this machine while you save up for a GPU, you need to consider a "G" range AMD processor.

The 4500 et. al. will not produce any video output on the motherboard HDMI. (I'm 90% sure on this). The motherboard only provides the Phy (sical) layer for the HDMI/DP it requires an integrated graphics CPU to display anything. I mean, you might if you get really lucky get a basic VGA console for the BIOS, but I'm not even sure of that!

I should've been more clear in my first post,i was drunk so was'nt thinking clearly, sorry about that.

Ok so i have a GT1030,and several HDD's i can carry forward.Also have a Kingston 240GB SSD that's never been used.
I can up my budget to £300 now,and i want this PC to last a long time.I dont game, apart from some emulation, like Wii-U,Wii,Dreamcast etc. Nothing too taxing. I will buy an M.2 drive when i replenish my funds a bit.

So i just want the best board,RAM,and CPU combo i can get. I also want a new PSU,and it must be modular, because i cba with all the wires hanging everywhere. So fire away guys, what should i buy? And thank you in advance.

Is the PSU excluded in the £300?

I'd suggest something like this:

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £340.96 (includes delivery: £7.99)

With a 5600G, you could drop the GT 1030 from the build, especially if it is a DDR4 version.

PSU is high quality, Seasonic built with a 10 year warranty.

Thanks for your reply. The rainforest has the 5600g @ £104. Also i have a full shroud EVGA GT1030 Gddr5. I'm also looking at this,is it any good?

Corsair VENGEANCE LPX DDR4 RAM 16GB (2x8GB) 3200MHz CL16

Also i should've said i'd prefer ATX mobo, but i understand it might cost more......or not? Sorry for all the questions. The last time i built a PC was with a Q8300 and DDR 2 ram lol. I'm a bit overwhelmed with so many choices atm.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but are say an A520 board newer and better than a B540 board? Why would A series be better than B series? Or is it AMD genius marketing at play again?

I answered this question in an earlier post, but simply put: at this end of the market (budget) you just need to consider each board individually for the features you want/need and most importantly: the price.

You're right, A520 boards are newer than B450, but they're technically a lower tier product:
- B450 was the midrange option for Zen+ and later, Zen 2.
- A520 was the budget option for Zen 2 and later, Zen 3.

I can up my budget to £300 now, and i want this PC to last a long time

If you want the PC to last for a long time, then I'd recommend you get an entry-level B550 board, reasons being:
- They have dropped in price a lot and you can get a pretty good one for £100-£120.
- PCI-E 4.0 could be useful later, particularly if you buy a lower-end GPU (like 6500 XT) which tend to lose more performance in older gen boards.
- The VRMs tend to be stronger, which could save you a headache if/when you upgrade the CPU.
- You usually get 2x M.2 slots and that's the way storage is going.

You're also more likely to get the CPU working out of the box with A520 or B550 (i.e. no BIOS update required), but I'd expect most B450 boards to have been updated by now.

On the other hand, if it ends up: you can have a good board and a bad CPU, or a good CPU and a bad board, then I'd take the latter option.

My honest recommendation is get a Ryzen 5 5600 (not G) and a B550 board, because I think that will give your PC the longest usable life, at the lowest relative cost. Since the small savings on the CPU and motherboard now (e.g. 4500 and A520/B450) might come back to bite you later.

I'm also looking at this, is it any good?

It is fine, just get a good deal, but with the low price of memory right now, I'd recommend you get 32GB.

I don't know if AMD/NVIDIA are preferable for emulation, but generally they're comparable (5600G and GT 1030), with some games doing better with either option. I'd probably keep the GT 1030 and get a 5600 non-X, but it is your call. Removing the GPU does have some advantages, like the option of a more compact build and lower idle power consumption.

Thank you for explaining things. I was actually looking at the 4500,and a A520,but you've gave me pause. I'll think it over for a day or so. I'll post back whatever happens, thanks again.

Ok so how about this combo:

You probably got it already, but without prices it's really hard to make any comment.

Motherboard- £89.00
RAM- £37
CPU- £89
PSU- £83
Total came to £300.02

I was on such a tight budget because i bought a 50" Phillips TV called 'The One' lol. Anyway,do you think i chose wisely,i'm pretty happy (i think) but i welcome all opinions.
