Stuck in the airport support thread

Flying out on Sunday, kinda glad this happened when it did, hopefully be sorted by the weekend.

I did read an article last night about a guy who's stuck and was due back to work today and his manager was fuming, didn't actually believe him until he switched on the news.

I suspect there will be quite a few people not turning up to work today.
I too was reading some of the quotes from stranded passengers.

"my boss was really annoyed" made me chuckle.

I understand that some people do have important appointments etc, but come on... Let's all just chill.

Sad facing and really playing up the poor victim isn't going to get things sorted any quicker.

I wonder when we'll find out what actually happened? They're saying it wasn't a cyber attack so equipment failure? A rarely occurring software bug? Cleaner unplugged the server? The French?

NATS has history of failures , probably just a matter of time before it happens again. No real contingencies in place since the last failure or lessons learnt on how to plan for supporting additional growth in air traffic.

shouldn't be flying everywhere anyway, environment...
no point spending a bazillion quid on a system that works properly when it'll soon get turned off when global warming goes nuts and flying has to be banned anyway.

Interesting. Do you have inside info?

Like most of the other things in the list, because it became so overused that it was starting to ruin perfectly good threads being spammed absolutely everywhere

Bit like all the jokes in here tbh. Letterbox, Mac10, Queen Wasp, Gucci Belt etc. May as well go to an Amy Schumer gig.

Full statement is here:

“I would like to apologise again for our technical failure yesterday. While we resolved the problem quickly, I am very conscious that the knock-on effects at such a busy time of year are still being felt by many people travelling in and out of the UK.

“I would like to reassure everyone that since yesterday afternoon all of our systems have been running normally to support airline and airport operations as they recover from this incident.

“NATS exists to allow everyone flying in UK airspace to do so safely. Our systems enable our air traffic controllers to deliver this service all year round. These have several levels of backup and allow us to manage around 2 million flights per year in some of the busiest and most complex airspace in the world safely and efficiently.

“Very occasionally technical issues occur that are complex and take longer to resolve. In the event of such an issue our systems are designed to isolate the problem and prioritise continued safe air traffic control.

“This is what happened yesterday. At no point was UK airspace closed but the number of flights was significantly reduced.

“Initial investigations into the problem show it relates to some of the flight data we received. Our systems, both primary and the back-ups, responded by suspending automatic processing to ensure that no incorrect safety-related information could be presented to an air traffic controller or impact the rest of the air traffic system. There are no indications that this was a cyber-attack.

“We have well established procedures, overseen by the CAA, to investigate incidents. We are already working closely with them to provide a preliminary report to the Secretary of State for Transport on Monday. The conclusions of this report will be made public.

“I would like again to apologise to everyone who has been affected.”

So it looks like it got data that didn't make sense and so automatically refused to process anything else. Seems like a vulnerability that could be exploited even if this time it wasn't an attack.

Perhaps it's more the flights back to the UK are more delayed than outbound flights? (hopefully for me :) )
Yep sitting in Tenerife, 2 bottles of Ron Mile down, to be frank that was the quickest bag check, security pass through I've ever been through. Flight was on time and arrived a little early.

Just sitting here listening to music enjoying the 22deg breeze.
