We don’t have that many nuclear weapons.

I did the maths on it once - I can't remember the exact numbers but our arsenal fully used would turn about 3% of Russia's landmass into glass - or the UK about twice over, their entire (on paper) arsenal would do the same to the entire landmass of the UK several times over. (In reality their viable nuclear arsenal is probably significantly smaller than on paper but still enough to glass the UK a few times).

I can't imagine a scenario where Russia would use their entire arsenal against the UK though.

Modern nuclear weapons are a long way from the world ending scenarios of the peak of the cold war with lots of big multi-megaton atom bombs but in some ways that is worse as many many more people would survive in unimaginably grim conditions.

Russia really only has 2 important cities Moscow & St Petersburg, despite its size. We would only need to use 2 nukes.

In addition to which nukes are largely irrelevant these days, as we now have precision weapons which can do direct damage to high value targets. The only reason nukes are taboo is because they do indescriminate damage to civilians, radiation is no respecter of international boundaries and the environmental damage they cause also making land unsusable for hundreds of years. That's why they are weapons of last resort.

We would only need to use 2 nukes.

With the warheads we use I'm only exaggerating for effect to say a single one in the centre of Moscow would "barely" be noticed in the suburbs. We certainly posses a nuclear arsenal capable of being a deterrent however.

We don't need to bomb the Moscow suburbs. As I said above precision weapons we have now have just a good effect as a nuke, but without causing the long lasting environmental damage to the planet. Nuclear weapons are obsolete only reserved as a last resort and deterrant

Ultimately the deterrent value of a nuclear arsenal is the mutually assured destruction. Precision munitions are all well and good but they are only effective against bunkers up to a few 10s of feet beneath the ground compared to anything up to 1000 feet with modern nuclear weapons.

Lots of planes flying into Moscow are or were in holding patterns, for some reason a lot of Turkish flights, possibly due to the meeting with Putin.

Not sure if due to drone attacks or what.

EDIT: Moscow VKO average delays 90 minutes, disruption index is maxed (major problems with long delays and several canceled flights).

Video of the first Challenger 2 loss on twitter, would seem they are throwing everything at this now.

Shame we couldn't send them all of ours and we just start anew, because no doubt this upgrade will cost more than starting anew and take longer im the end for so few units.

Lots of happy gloating people laughing on twitter at the loss of the "invincible" challenger. But it is to be expected that there will be losses. It's a shame the challengers superb record appears to have been broken. But it's to be expected.

Was it tank v tank or arti?

99% chance it's arty or land mines

There is very little vehicle vs vehicle combat in southern ukraine

And in the video that shows that dead challenger, these guys are driving in a car down the same road and an arty shell lands nearby in the video

There is a chance it was taken out by one of the advanced western anti tank systems.
Russia have picked up a fair few over time, hell they even have some Bradleys, a Leo (claimed) etc so its far from impossible it was hit by one of our weapon systems.
If I was Russia I would be putting them into the hands of some of their best troops to use against Ukraine at the right time.

There are still plenty of systems out there they will take any tank out.

The comments on twitter though have the same smell as some people round here will post.
Claiming things never said. No one sane ever said the Challys were impervious to being destroyed. Just that weak 60s-70s level RPGs etc don't stand much chance.

No one has built the perfect tank yet. Of course I exclude the T14 since thats so awesome its stealth means no one has even seen one at the front yet ;)

Don’t shed a tear for the tank. “It's impossible to entirely avoid armor losses, especially due to the enemy's advantage in the air,” Ukrainian soldier Olexandr Solon'ko wrote. “However, armor serves a specific purpose that entails risks. These actions are justified by the fact that they save lives.”

You can replace a piece of metal, even if it's expensive, but you can't repair a human life.”
