Weight loss

I went from around 11 stone to 16 during covid, I ended up on antidepressants as I had a mental health breakdown during lockdown - man those things messed with my body and hormones so much.

Trying to get back to where I was at the moment and it's so difficult, I used to be very fit (was in the middle of becoming a Les Mills instructor when covid first started) and I still have a lot of fitness and strength.

For me, heavy exercise makes me feel good - but I lose literally nothing from it, I can do 3x step classes and 1 or 2 1x hour high intensity cardio classes a week - and I lost nothing in weight, it only started to budge slowly when I really curbed my eating habits.

But it's hard work :/ really hard work :/

Congratulations on the loss so far. You have realised quickly that weight loss is little more than eating and drinking 'better' and moving more. It pains me to read various posts about all kinds of gimmicks people pay for without any need.

Currently 14st but for most of my life I've been around the 11st mark. Too much beer, eating for the sake of it when I'm not hungry...its tricky though love beer and love food, put them together and it just amplifies how good they are. Need to find a balance.

Took me a while to accept I cant fit in a 32" waist anymore :p

Didn't search first then?

Although, speaking as somebody who has dropped from 16st to 11st over the past year, I'm calling shenanigans on you dropping that much weight without exercising. I already ate sort of sensibly, but the weight only dropped off when I started walking 25-30km a day.

don't see why not, eating less is more effective for losing weight than exercise...exercise is just burning off the calories from the food you've ate... so if you seriously reduce your calories/food intake you'll lose weight no problem regardless of how much exercise

I've been a 34 inch most of my adult life and going to 36 is my wake up call ,couldn't go to 32 though, my hips are too wide (6ft 2 tall )
smart scales definitely needed though as when i do loads of intensive cliff walking plus kettlebell on return my weight will stay the same but muscle mass/ fat percentage change.

Cut carbs calories... loose weight. Done.
Fixed that for you - carbs aren't some demon that make people put weight on. It's simply calories in vs out.

The reason most people lost weight rapidly initially when lowering carbs is the body dropping water weight, then most of them stall out and fail the new 'diet' in a month and go back to square one.

The other reason people end up losing weight long term on carb reduction, is fat/protein are more satiating and you have less desire to binge eat - again though, this is simple calories in vs out again, if you over eat on a low/no carb diet, you're still going to pile the weight on.

Low/no carb introduces other issues such as vitamin/mineral deficiencies as people generally aren't eating fruit/veg (maybe some cruciferous greens). So if they need to go low carb to drop the weight in the first place, they likely don't have the discipline to ensure they're getting the same vitamins and minerals from non fruit/veg sources. /sweeping generalisation

Exercise actually has very little to do with weight loss unless you do in insane amount.
Eating is the main thing to change.

I've seen you mention this a few times- congratulations.

You weren't working before that, correct? So it was a total change in activity levels, right?

Without wanting to sound cheeky, it really worked out well for you- you don't have to waste your free time pointlessly going to a gym/ running!

Was a rather portly gentleman due to medication, lack of exercise due to bad back and knee and poor diet. At the ripe old age of 56 I finally decided to do something about it, so far have dropped from 21 and a half stone (139kg) to 16 and a half (105kg), no real exercise just sensible eating. For my height and build, I would be happy at 15 stone, so a few more pounds to drop. I am visiting my friend Kim who inspired me to take this step, she is looking forward to seeing the new me in a few weeks time, am aiming to be 15.7 Stone (100kg) when I visit.

Well done and doing something about health is one of the most rewarding thing anyone can do in a lifetime. I went from 117kg to 95kg by eating healthy and finding an exercise routine with both me and my wife enjoy, not really into and fed diet or exercise but just smaller portions and less junk food.
Good luck and keep doing what works for you and don't loose motivation as loosing weight can be fast at first and the last few pounds/kilos will be harder and slower.

I'm 6 3 and currently about 13 and a half stone. I've always been a skel, and weighed just under 13 stone going into covid and was happy with that. I am not taking the mick here- we all have our own target.

I went up to nearly 15 stone during covid and the switch to working from home, and didn't like that at all- it was a lack of enforced exercise.

One other thing that I think makes a difference (from my experience) is eating and beer in the evenings. I stopped eating giant bags of kettle crisps every night and cut beer to two or three nights a week.

You don't have to live like a monk, but be consistent and honest over time. That's what I found.

I was working, just in a lab and at times offices. So nowhere near as much activity. I think the hardest activity back then was pulling the fume hood down which hadn't been oiled/greased for forever.

I went down one notch on my belt by just cutting sugar out of my coffee, surprisingly. Im still pudgy tho at 5'10 and 13.5 stone.
