AMD’s Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Graphics Business Unit Scott Herkelman Announces Departure

It's not just strategy for AMD to gain traction you have so many indoctrined in Nvidia so AMD will need something special to gain lots of share. AMD have decent offerings that i would buy over Nvidia due to price performance but for others there is just not enough price performance gap when you add in RT and DLSS if that's what you want. What AMD have gained must have been down to either heavy discounts on the 6 series or the aggressive pricing on the 7600/7900xt as the 7800xt/7700xt are not a factor yet. I would be surprised if they don't make further gains in q3

Aggressive pricing? Surely can't be serious? :p

If Nvidia price the 5080 at £1999 and AMD price theirs at £1749. Will you come out and say that again? Because that is how I see it.

Nothing special about their pricing whatsoever. It only looks decent due to how looney Nvidia prices are.

Aggressive would have been releasing the 7900 XT at £549 and 7900 XTX £699.

Nah your strategy would be business suicide, you have to leave margin for price drops. Coming in where you suggest would leave nothing on the table. Everyone seemed happy enough with the 3080 10gb at £650. I just got a 7900xt 20gb at £660 after selling Starfield. That's what i mean by aggressive not release price where the 7900xt was a bad buy. So yea on release AMD just lined up below Nvidia which is far from aggressive but now you can bag a decent card if you wait for deals hence why they gained some in q2.

It seems all the savings of going chiplets are going into the fixed cost of doing business on only 15% of market.
Yes, they can get better margins using wafers for CPUs.
Yes, packaging of chiplets could be a bottleneck.
But, most of all it seems the Wall Street obsession with margins over profits, which means that a high volume, lower margins strategy is not considered.

That would mean there are tiny margins in these and if that is true then we are all screwed. Maybe Nvidia's are not so lonney after all?

I don't buy it. They were over priced on release and still over priced now imo.

I was happy with the 3080 FE which cost me under £600 after selling the codes Nvidia gave. Yes they did that too. And that was 2020 and was their release price.

The 7900 XT performance should be much lower in 2023. But here we are. Both companies taking their customers for a ride :(

Also the best gpu at the time offered 15% more performance. Can't say that about the 7900 XT. Lol

I agree with you in that sense but your price for the 7900xtx would put it £400 below the 4080 and the xtx in most games is the faster card. i can see why AMD would not do that off the bat but would have liked at least £200 under on release due to weaker RT and DLSS being better than FSR. Let's be honest though pricing from both AMD and Nvidia have made no sense since the mining boom and Covid. What i spent was the max i was willing to pay and in this climate i have no regrets as it's not going to change any time soon.

Got any links about that?

It's not confirmed by AMD but if they do exit the high end GPU segment and only stick with low to mid range it wouldn't surprise me as that's where they make most of their money.

With RDNA 2 AMD offered an Nvidia 102 die competitor product for $650, With RDNA3 they offered a 103 which is essentially a 104 competitor for $900-1000, thats a huge swing in value and the reason why they haven't cleaned up, the RDNA 2 104 competitor was $480 and even that wasn't deemed great value.

Had the 4080 come in at $700 and the 4070ti at $500 then I have no doubt these would have been the prices AMD come in at but instead they looked at Nvidia's crazy prices and though they could come in with a huge mark up themselves and it just hasn't work out for them which is why their marketshare has barely increased despite this being a once in a lifetime opportunity.

100% this.

Yea but Nvidia didn't did they. Everyone seems to want Nvidia to pocket loads and AMD to come in way cheaper with less profits and still buy Nvidia and for me that makes no sense for AMD to do so. Price under Nvidia and offer deals now and then to keep profits up. Until AMD can beat out Nvidia hardware wise they gotta just stick in and make money off what they have like they did to Intel. Unlike Intel Nvidia seem not to falter and keep pushing boundaries. With chiplets i think AMD can get there but years off atm. Personally with AMD's current hardware i don't see a way forward bar giving there gpu's away to gain big market share.

Funny how we hardly ever see this happen to nvidia employees.
Maybe it's just not jumped upon in the same doom-mongering fashion? Tom Petersen was a huge presence at Nvidia for almost 15 years, both as an engineer and the person usually charged with presenting Nvidia's new stuff to the public. He still left to join Intel a few years ago and has pretty much been the face of Arc (alongside that weasel Ryan Shrout), especially since Raja jumped ship. I haven't checked, but I don't believe Nvidia went out of business in the wake of his departure. People get tired of their job and/or get a better offer and move on all the time.

This is where you are going wrong. Seeing AMD like they are your friend. They are not. What I want is best for me, not concerned about AMD. If AMD can come in competitive and not looney like Nvidia, they would be substantially cheaper to the point where one could run native and still beat the performance of what Nvidia sell at that price point even with that product using DLSS. Can’t see them catching up in RT soon, but hey, at least for that AMD give more vram.

You and I know what a good price for these products are. That is what we should be demanding. Not sitting there worrying about yeah, but people will buy Nvidia anyway. Who cares about those people.

Had AMD released the 7900 XTX at £699 I would have got one on release I recon. I would not pay that today though.

3 pages somehow an amd employee leaving gets, Tom Petersen got 18 posts and that was it.

For £700 plus Starfield was there a Nvidia card better. My original thoughts were towards the 7800xt as 12 gb vram on Nvidia with the 4070 and stupid price of the 4070ti with again 12gb vram i am not feeling safe. AMD ain't my friend but for my needs they become one as they are cheaper and give piece of mind. No way i am using more than 20gb Vram so all i got to worry about is settings over the life span. Most people have buying parameters of what they want and it's not my fault or loyalty that always bring me to buy AMD as i see it different to you. Your current card is good but imo it comes with a flaw in the 12gb vram. That won't sit right with me when spending money. Also unlike you i buy once so am more picky as it's going to last until i buy again years later unlike you ever year or so. I have no loyalty to anyone bar my own purchasing decisions for my needs. Not everybody that buys AMD or Nvidia have a side but they do have there reasoning's for why they buy and i stick by mine as they are correct for me.

The main difference between you and me is you play more PC AAA and you don't mind buying each gen or more than once per gen. I want to buy once for a much longer time and play a lot more less flashy games. With a 3080ti and you not being on a 4 series i am assuming you can see how bad value Nvidia are atm. Get the wallet out for a 4090 you know you want to.

Some threads are more likely to get padded by poor quality reheated moaning about a company and it's products.

People have the same lack of information about about herkelmans value as petersens and the closest they ever got was to have an opinion on his awkward publicity attempts.

So AMD next?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO................

What for? Cyberpunk? I just completed Starfield which was a game I really looked forward to. Moving onto Cyberpunk which I already completed almost 3 years ago. I ain’t buying a 4090 for that. There would have to be a bunch more must play games that need that performance for me to do that and even then I would play them and sell the card with minimal loss.

You don’t need to assume that I see Nvidia 4000 series as bad value. I flat out said it multiple times to you. I even said I think AMD 7000 series is bad value, not sure if you forgot or don’t read my posts properly :p

12GB has been fine. Nothing I play has needed more. As you know I don’t intend to keep this card for 5 years or something. As soon as an opportunity comes along I will upgrade. I got it for £575 a year ago and had tons of fun with it.

You make fair points, but be honest, you have said it before. You prefer AMD. There is definitely some loyalty there. I have no loyalty. I even hope Intel do well so in a couple of gens and buying their cards become an option. More competition the better for me :D
