Hi

Im looking for an upgraded GPU for the mentioned motherboard for a present. Currently running a nvidia gtx 1080.
I have limited info on the system but any suggestions based on what the board can run.
Thanks

The board is not important (it is very recent and should work with anything), but these are important:

Case: max length, width and thickness of graphics card.
PSU: model/wattage and connectors available.

For gaming, I'd look at a minimum of:
- 1080p upgrade: 67x0 XT.
- 1440p upgrade: 6800, 6800 XT, 7800 XT, 4070.
- 4K upgrade: 7900 XT, 7900 XTX, 4080

PSU is Corsair RM850x
Not sure on the case but it is a full tower if that helps. Cpu is i5 13600kf. 2 x g.skill trident 16gb memory.
Thanks
Could you explain your recommendations as im not sure what that means. Sorry

The reccomendedations by brother @Tetras is what resolution they would be best suited giving an upgrade from your gtx 1080

Example

1080p monitor resolution.

Recommend a 6700xt

What resolution do you game at and what is your budget ?

i believe its 1080 and around £500. Thanks
Best GPU for your money is the 7800xt or if you prefer Nvidia the 4070 but the 7800xt is slightly faster.

Both these GPUs can handle 1440p as well.

If you prefer ray tracing then Nvidia GPU is better but do some research by checking out reviews/benchmarks before you buy.

As @mickyflinn mentioned, it is the resolution of your monitor. Simply put: if you have a higher resolution monitor, then you need a better/bigger graphics card to play the latest games.

A £500 7800 XT or 4070 is overkill for 1080p (most 1080p-aimed cards are still near the performance level of your 1080), but they're the best performing (new) for your budget.

My son believes he cant play the latest games because of his GTX 1080. Is he misguided in thinking this?

Gtx 1080 should still handle 1080p gaming...what's the rest of the system
That being said, if you are going to upgrade the gpu with that budget, I'd definitely go something like the 7800xt of wait till Jan and see what the 4070super does, and if it reduces the price of the 4070.
1440p monitors are reasonably cheap now and a 27in or 34in ultrawide will make a great xmas present next year

Yes his monitors are quite old.
You didn't answer the games, but generally: yes, a GTX 1080 is still capable of 1080p, even in recent games.

But, if he wants to play the very latest AAA games at high settings, then a GTX 1080 is reaching the edge of playability.

Gtx 1080 lacks async compute. That can hold it back in some modern games. It should still be fine for some older games or sports titles but I would highly recommend to upgrade it. I had one in my media pc and recently changed to rx 6700xt..
Much more please experience
