Road Cycling

The weather here has been bloody awful for weeks at this point. The best we have had is about 2 hours of vague sun on a couple of mornings. Apart from that its been either grey and threatening all day or ******* it down most of the time.

Zero motivation to go out in this, especially with all the crappy driving you get around this time of year.

It's been truly awful here. I can handle a bit of rain but the winds have been gale force a lot of the time and I can't be doing with that. Tomorrow looks slightly better at damp, grey and only 15mph wind. I had hoped to get a few decent rides in but I've been restricted to a few Zwifts.

chunk off this atm
Thanks - was looking at that one if I went the more road route. Also flipping it completely opposite weight wise, i've actually taken a lot of interest in this;

Personally, I find clocking up miles indoors MUCH harder than outdoors...
At the benefit of having to do about 15-20% less time to do. Mate said there were groups of 300+ rolling around on Christmas eve.

67km for me to do to today. So 2 and a bit hours. Will venture out and try to join some club mates if anyone else has left the house.

yep agreed after doing pretty much all of my stupid 500 indoors this year, where other years I did completely outside, I found it harder but a lot quicker to get it done and out the way.

I think ill go back to doing it outdoor next year though, as long as there is no family drama that needs sorting out

My last outdoor Festive 500 was 2020. I did 517km in 17.5 hours, so average speed of 29.5km/h. That was a kind year in terms of weather and I stuck to very flat routes deliberately (about 2000m of climbing all up). This year I’ve done 530km virtually in 15 hours for an average speed of 35km/h and have climbed about 3000m more. If you stick to the flat you could tick it off in less than 13 hours I reckon.

Outside it’s been ******* down pretty much every day bar Boxing Day and gale force winds. Sitting on the turbo for a few hours each day has been a piece of cake compared to that! It also saves all the post ride cleaning and prep time. On the turbo I literally grab a couple of bottles and a towel and everything else is there good to go.

All done. 19.5 hours total all on my lonesome this year on the gravel bike. Probably one of the slower ones. Weather down here hasn't been too bad but this morning was horrific. Got soaked and hailed on 25 minutes in and although stayed warm for the next hour then got soaked through again about 90mins in and never warmed back up.

Erm... can do!

2023 was a bit of a flop for me, getting sick twice and both times impacting the amount of cycling I could do over 2 months.

2023 goals were:
5000 miles, did 3584
300 hours, did 211
300 active days, did 305
1x 100 miler, nope
More Z2 90+ minutes, not really.

I think my 2024 goal should be don't get sick but I'm wondering if I've got the start of a cold already...

My 2023 was an absolute write off in terms of being on the bike. Just as I was getting back into training I had 2 family members pass away and has made me not even look at the bike since November.

Not sure when I'll be getting back on there. Kind of want to get back on it ASAP as it made me feel a bit better after my Nan had passed but just have little to no enthusiasm of waking up early before work or on the weekend to get a ride in at the moment. I've got a week booked off after my grandmothers funereal but not sure how much cycling I'll want to do between that and my aunties.

I'll keep my TR subscription rolling, like a chump, in the hope I get back onto it as I was enjoying it but I think I'm going to try and use the upcoming tour of zwift as a route back onto the bike.

On a positive note; it's made me realise that spending money on Di2 would've been a waste as I wouldn't have even used it! So there is that.

Whoa there. I was on your side until this part :p

Honestly though mate, I think that finding motivation to ride in the depths of the UK winter is hard enough for those of us who haven't had a miserable few months and fallen off the wagon a bit so don't be too hard on yourself. I have been outside on the bike a grand total of once in the past month or so. Between Christmas/New Year and the fact its basically not stopped raining here for about 6 weeks I have very little get up and go for outdoors. Luckily I have found the motivation to jump on Zwift pretty regularly but I can't wait for some sunny days to arrive.

It won't be that long until the spring starts to show and I reckon that a ride or two in the beautiful countryside in the sunshine will sort you right out. Sometimes you need to find motivation to do something when you don't want to and sometimes you need to accept that your motivation isn't there and just chill for a while. If you're not careful you will completely fall away from cycling if you force yourself to do it when you aren't getting any enjoyment from it.

Good luck and I hope 2024 is a good year for you (and everyone else) mate.
