Decluttering your house.

Feels like an excuse, there must be solutions that allow you to take control of it without depending on family.
How about hiring a van for a day, or paying a company to take care of it e.g. https://www.clearabee.co.uk/

Before calling it an excuse maybe dont make assumptions about my circumstances, a hire van thing has been considered, and have even spoke to a couple, the problem is I need to have everything moved in front ready for them to go, so its a kind of do everything at once deal instead of a more manageable slower pace of it all, but that I think will be the eventual route, will still need family help for that though.

We're not hoarders in the sense of keeping everything but overtime(42yrs of marriage, 2 house moves, a flood and an extention built around the same time, renovating the house you just accumulate things. This is just reality for us, I'm trying to get rooms sorted but get very little help from her, that I can't be bothered. Health issues also slows me down.
yeap add to that the inlaws dieing and now we have majority of there house contents gives me 3 rooms full of boxes furniture etc a large single garage / converted to shed full and part of my car garage...loft dont talk to me about the loft:) oh and 44 years hehe

I am reminded to post here again. I sorted some stuff out again last night and at the weekend, though nothing on the scrap list still. Just moved bits from one room to another :D

Though i was thinking about the selling of loads of Warhammer stuff again, the room that takes up is mental.

Just made a start on reboarding the loft for storage/ hobby. Boards that are down are over 35 yrs old square edge chipboard and are beginning to bow a bit. Need to get new joists and beams to hang them on.

Just binned 6 broken salt and pepper mills - Kept them just in case ????
Wife is out shopping and took a big bag of stuff to charity shop.
I am now about to attack cupboards above built in double oven.

Just doing bits at a time certainly gets rid of stuff as it's a pain trying to do it all at once..

Don't worry you aren't the only one

I picked up one of those rotating holders with the herbs in from a side of the road freebie table. Most of the herbs are dry and past it despite being sealed. I had this idea that i'd reuse the cases and ditch the herbs. But thankfully i've come to my senses and they sit ready for the tip outside of the cupboard.

Just took 17 years worth of old PC Gamer magazines down to the tip.
Kept them up until now, intending to one day look back on the good old days of pc gaming, but obviously never happened and were just taking up space.

What I did with my ancient stash of PC mags was put a batch at a time next to the bog and give them a final flick through. Sadly not absorbent enough to truly recycle there and then, although Amiga Shopper could have been used at a push.

End of the day Friday looms and what better to be thinking about that clearing out some stuff over the weekend? Was supposed to start last weekend but a hangover put a stop to that through no fault of my own...

Like OP I too have seen Sort Your Life Out and I am definitely a hoarder, it's about time I cut down on things. First on the list has to be clothes as my wardrobe is full despite wearing about 10% of it at most. Feeling pretty confident though as I'll just ship a load of the no longer worn stuff off to the local charity shops. Wish me luck!

I had a go at the cupboards above the cooker and was a bit disappointed, There wasn't much in there once I got it out - The wife is messy. She takes something out and never put's it back from where she got it -She justs put's it back at front of cupboard and next thing you know you can't find anything and there is no room to put things back.
Why she has 5 new spray bottles of stain remover up there I will never know.
Binned a chopping board and some BBQ sticks you put meat on.

Inspired me to get rid of some stuff today. Barely scratched the surface.

Quite ridiculous how much stuff I've kept just thinking I might need it one day.

Bathroom got it this morning - Why do wimin hoard near empty bottles of eveything. Did find two packs of tooth plaque brushes.
Looks good after a tidy up and bin session.

The problem I have with decluttering my other half's stuff is I have a huge amount of DIY tools, equipment, parts etc before I even consider my computer kit. All of this takes up more space than her stuff even though I tidy and bin my unlikely to be needed items regularly.

In our house we are enablers. I have tools and wood and electronic and music stuff. She has crafts and art and tools and decor stuff. There's some synergy in sharing tools for hobbies and what we have in common is an awful lot of unfinished projects :)

100% this is how I do it - wait for the wife to be at work - and clear out some stuff....

Literally mountains of stuff in the loft from when she did a degree/college 25 years ago and she still insists on keeping it etc.
Then the dresses/clothes that are stored up there from weddings 20 years ago that she will NEVER wear again but insist on keeping them.
Drives me insane the amount of "stuff" we have as a family...

Local facebook groups/gumtree signed up to - going to start selling stuff. If it's not sold in 2 weeks - off to tip or charity shop. NEED to clear out this house.... ridiculous amount of stuff.

Did the cupboards above the hob the other day and pulled out 49 spice jars -most half full the rest half empty - So any the same made one out of two then binned what she won't use again so put a LOAD IN DUSTBIN.
tODAY WAS DENTIST SO WHILE THERE TOOK THREE BAGS OF PAPERBACKS TO CHARITY SHOP AND TOOK MAGAZINES AND TECH STUFF UP TO TIP
Sod it -finger hit caps button -not going to delete and write again. I need to look at keyboard while typing.
