From April 2025 all EVs from 2017 will pay £180 Car tax

I have googled and cant find a definitive answer, is it just the renewal which will have a fee or in April 2025 will all EVs have to pay tax even if they are within a taxed period?

I am guessing it will only be at renewal where they have to pay for tax. The obvious answer would be to SORN the car for a few days in march 2025 and then tax again for 12 months however I have been barred from doing this by the boss! ;)

so my 2nd and final question, even tho it is £0 can you choose to tax an EV for only 6 months? my car tax is due in June so i am thinking i may tax it for 6 months and then renew it for 12 months which will then take me to december 2025.

am i being tight fisted for a £90 saving? maybe. I guess you can take the Northerner out of the North but you cant take the North out of the Northerner :D

I am thinking the same, anything else would be a logisitcal nightmare to sort out. hence why seeing as i cant SORN it i am thinking of getting 6months tax for £0 in June rather than 12 months.
 
They list a 6 month option as £0 but N/A for direct debits/monthly, so I would expect it to let you do 6 months otherwise they'd list that as N/A too

to be fair, EVs should pay tax... i just wish the money actually went back into the infrastructure so that the roads were better quality.
It is a little unfortunate it is being done retrospectively.... ie our pug308 was still only £30ish tax despite being a dirty diesel and i believe had it of not been written off last November, it would continue to cost that going forward (unless i am mistaken).
if it was all new EVs from April 2025 i would have absolutely no qualms about it.... backdating, when those older cars were bought at a massive premium and part of the maths done to justify buying them was cheaper running costs inc no tax seems a bit harsh to me.

bear in mind those of us with 2nd hand EVs are not getting all the huge tax benefits that all those who can get company cars get, and those benefits are not being touched.

EV expensive 40K car tax from 2025 might be one to avoid ... and queue up to buy new in this Mar/upcoming year;
if manufacturers keep their promises should be more sub 40K ev's soon.
 
Was wondering too. I've been expecting it to be finalised by April 2024, if it's not already, and from then it will include a chargeable component. So if if road tax renewal due in May then would pay one month (£15), two months if in June etc. Not difficult to do but it's the public sector I suppose :D .
 
Government basically runs a bait and switch scam on EV buyers with road tax lol

My old un-DPFed diesel runaround still scrapes in to the £35 bracket by 1g/km. Heh

ok so it seems - and i will hopefully find out tomorrow we dont even need to SORN the car.

tomorrow (1/3/24) apparently if i go the the car tax checker online, and click to tax the vehicle, i can just do it. put in numberplate and the number on my V5C it will warn me that my tax is not due yet and i will lose a number of months of tax............... however if i ignore it and just push it through anyway, it will then tax the car, ending 28/2/25 for a grand total of £0

who knows what will happen when labour get in however, though i am not expecting anything much in this regard.

In the past all vehicles already registered have kept the tax banding that the car had when new. Surely if its going to change from 2025 it will only be vehicles registered from 2025 onwards?

Also in the past, tax changes always take place on the 1st of April.

It is retrospective in this case, so will apply to existing vehicles.

Losing the expensive car supplement exemption won't be retrospective though.
 
When I had my 99g/km diesel Focus which meant the tax was £0 there was no option to tax it for 6 months, only 12.
