EV Car tax question.

Or set a minimum in the middle somewhere eg £75, for them to harp on about net zero and wanting us to have cleaner transport, then penalizing the people who are trying to go net zero.

If they set a minimum like that they would raise more money than just dumping £180 on EV owners, but the budget favours people who are keeping their ICE cars with fuel duty being frozen but nothing to help EV owners on the charging side of things.
These people 'trying to get to net zero'. Are they the ones taking advantage of the massively beneficial BIK rate or the ones picking up heavily depreciated used EVs?

I only know of one single person who went EV, new, out of their own pocket. I know dozens who are in it for the BIK.

The localised reduction in exhaust emissions are a great side effect to the financial benefits, not the other way around.

The best net result will be people driving an EV and simply deciding "you know what, I prefer this" not hammering home being the saviours of our planet because a push bike is a far better tool for that job!

i could have gotten a really tidy ice car for a fraction of the price of my EV (indeed the devil on my shoulder was screaming at me to do just that when i got my car). my hope was over the life of the car to break even money wise but i was never under an expectation to save money over all....... the way things are going however that isnt going to happen either.

for instance

£10k cheaper than my car, and £10,000 buys a lot of petrol.

right now higher end EVs are still a premium over petrol cars, so imo for now the running costs do need to be cheaper...... i say that despite the fact that what ever happens i hope to never go back, but if we want more people on board, it is what is needed.

That was 8 months ago however, right now its a brilliant time to buy an EV so why not do both, save money and have a cleaner car. Right now it is absolutely true that depending on your use case for your car you CAN easily get a 2nd hand EV which will save you money......

but that still does not excuse hiking tax on EVs imo where the buyer did pay a premium but not adding it onto "eco" petrol and diesel cars imo.

On one hand part of me wonders what would happen if the government stopped all incentives on fuel and vehicle costs and just let the market decide. ..... the problem is if they did it isnt really fair because the fossil fuel industry has had decades of sweetners handed to them already.

It's tricky because the counter argument was that to be 'fair' then the Tax on some ones 20 year old very efficient (for its time) petrol or diesel vehicle should be raised to match at £175. They may have made that purchase 20 years ago based on the fuel economy / emissions at the time and have kept that vehicle ever since maintaining it to the very best of their ability. The very definition of minimising emissions over the life cycle of a product. How is it 'fair' for them to suddenly be lumped with a tax increase?

Don't forget we could be talking entry specification 1.2 TDi's and 3 cylinder petrol cars here. Not premium brand 400 BHP SUVs. Retrospectively taxing these cars and their owners would be a VERY ill thought out move by the government.

Also, lets not forget that sticking 40L of fuel in the tank = £21.20 in duty. Or in other words, 8 and a bit tanks of fuel and you've already covered the EVs annual VED in fuel duty alone.

Letting the market decide... that would have been nice. Unfortunately it was Net Zero (choice) mandated removal of sale of ICE, which has already had it's first push back. Who will genuinely be surprised if the ZEV mandate gets pulled back and 2035 becomes 2040? I'd even put money on it!

I dream of the day I don't have to breath in clapped out diesel exhaust fumes but it's been approached in such a daft way I think we'll be there later than if we'd just left Tesla et al to bring their alternatives and watched the other car makers follow suit once they hit FOMO state and felt they could make the products (and finances) work.

Beyond being large enough to accommodate sufficient discs to deal with the weight of the car..... the fad for gigantic rims and runner band tyres has about as much basis in performance as the ridiculous 'gamer' chairs styled to look like sports car seats. As if you're going to be pulling lateral Gs and wearing a 5 point harness while stuffing cheetos in your face watching YouTube.
You're clearly not on my godlike level of driving  . They will deform less, as there's less to deform. I did drive an LR when my model 3 performance was in for some work and it did feel less grippy when cornering, however can't remember what tyres where on it or things like pressures at the time.

To be fair most people think themselves godlike once behind the wheel
