Got an Assasin King myself actually , it's just about keeping my 5950x in check (75-80 degrees) while I procrastinate on cleaning my waterblock/other case £17 well spent!

Aye, fantastic bit of kit on a budget. I've got one on a 5800X3D and it's quite capable. Was on sale for £15 when I picked it up too!

Think I paid £21 for mine actually, although that was over a year ago. Had it on a 3700x previously (65-88W) and I'm pretty sure it never hit 65! Longer term I'd probably splash the ~£30 for the peerless, I'm guessing it would be close to silent!

Funnily enough, I bought mine for a 3700X too. I was doing a rebuild in a new case and my old HSF was too big to fit into the new setup. When I later upgraded to a 5800X3D I figured I'd see how things went before splashing out for a beefier Phantom Spirit or Peerless Assassin and was pleasantly surprised at how well it managed after a little tweaking.

As mentioned by Trojan, I think yourself and a couple of others are confusing 4X and 4K.

A 4X game is sometimes referred to as a grand strategy title, so things like Civilization etc.

4X games absolutely do benefit from a strong CPU even at 4K, especially in later rounds. Anything made by Paradox very much benefits from an X3D CPU in fact, such as the aforementioned Stellaris.

Best GPU's in your budget both in terms of performance and bang for buck are the 7900 GRE, then the 4070 Super if you prefer the green team
Though both are total overkill if you mainly play 4x games

I was looking at the GRE though as you said overkill.

My niece is playing BG3 and I have upgraded her PC from a Titan X (basically a 980 Ti with 12 GB VRAM) to a 2080 Ti and she is very pleased at the performance improvement. Elden Ring apparently recommends 8 GB of VRAM, so more is better and you are right to be concerned.

This may be a sensible middle gorund for now

I do have a 4K monitor with 60Hz

With VAT removed and adjusting for local tax comes in at £580 so a good deal.

On that route, RX6600 is only 40-45% faster than 980Ti. And not a huge advantage in VRAM either
Could skip GPU upgrade for now, later get something that is a bigger jump?

I'd definitely agree WRT the overall system upgrade, will be of more benefit overall than a faster GPU alone, with a nice upgrade path to an X3D CPU and better card down the line when needed.

For 4K, you really need 12 - 16 gig of VRAM to keep it 4K friendly for a few years. Plus don't be fooled by some GPU's coming with 12 gig of VRAM, the rest of the graphics card needs to be capable, for example 256 bit memory bus or higher, I don't think a 6600 will cut it at 4K. It is a good 1080P, or 1440P GPU.

The PS5 and Series X pack lots of video RAM onboard, 16 Gig split between GPU and CPU. New games now take advantage of higher VRAM.

The closest equivalent GPU MATCHING PS5, and Series X consoles is the AMD 6700XT, apparently.

I didn't even know what 4X meant so I don't know how much my opinion is worth, but I agree, getting a 6600 for 4K is ... uhm, not good, even for 4K/60, I doubt it would be worthwhile unless the game requirements are very modest.

Could be worth finding out what res he is on, but either way if his gaming is primarily 4X/strat a total platform update is his best option.
