Got an Assasin King myself actuallyNo hsf included, so you'd need to factor another £15-20 in for something like a Thermalright Assassin King, it's already a touch over budget too.

Aye, fantastic bit of kit on a budget. I've got one on a 5800X3D and it's quite capable. Was on sale for £15 when I picked it up too!Got an Assasin King myself actually, it's just about keeping my 5950x in check (75-80 degrees) while I procrastinate on cleaning my waterblock/other case
£17 well spent!

Think I paid £21 for mine actually, although that was over a year ago. Had it on a 3700x previously (65-88W) and I'm pretty sure it never hit 65! Longer term I'd probably splash the ~£30 for the peerless, I'm guessing it would be close to silent!
Thanks for clarifying, did mix them up!As mentioned by Trojan, I think yourself and a couple of others are confusing 4X and 4K.
A 4X game is sometimes referred to as a grand strategy title, so things like Civilization etc.
4X games absolutely do benefit from a strong CPU even at 4K, especially in later rounds. Anything made by Paradox very much benefits from an X3D CPU in fact, such as the aforementioned Stellaris.
I was looking at the GRE though as you said overkill.Best GPU's in your budget both in terms of performance and bang for buck are the 7900 GRE, then the 4070 Super if you prefer the green team
Though both are total overkill if you mainly play 4x games
These are pretty good deals

This may be a sensible middle gorund for nowMy niece is playing BG3 and I have upgraded her PC from a Titan X (basically a 980 Ti with 12 GB VRAM) to a 2080 Ti and she is very pleased at the performance improvement. Elden Ring apparently recommends 8 GB of VRAM, so more is better and you are right to be concerned.
I do have a 4K monitor with 60HzWhat resolution and refresh is your monitor?
I did mean 4X games as people have mentionedUnless I'm missing something, OP is referring to 4X (i.e. strategy) gaming, not 4k?
I didn't think of this approach, would be a great upgrade potenital for the future. If I was mainly playing 4X/grand strat games I'd go for something like this over a 7900GRE, especially if you're a fan of Paradox developed games.
My basket at OcUK:
- 1 x TeamGroup Delta RGB 32GB (2X16GB) DDR5 PC5-48000C38 6000MHz Dual Channel Ki (SKU: MY-0AT-TG) = £99.95
- 1 x AMD Ryzen 5 7600 Six Core 5.10GHz (Socket AM5) Processor - Retail (SKU: CP-3DW-AM) = £188.99
- 1 x Asus Prime B650M-A WIFI II (Socket AM5) DDR5 Micro-ATX Motherboard (SKU: MB-6K6-AS) = £139.99
- 1 x Sapphire Radeon RX 6600 Pulse Gaming 8GB GDDR6 PCI-Express Graphics Card (SKU: GX-39R-SP) = £199.99
Total: £636.91 (includes delivery: £7.99)
With VAT removed and adjusting for local tax comes in at £580 so a good deal.If I was mainly playing 4X/grand strat games I'd go for something like this over a 7900GRE, especially if you're a fan of Paradox developed games.

I didn't even know what 4X meant so I don't know how much my opinion is worth, but I agree, getting a 6600 for 4K is ... uhm, not good, even for 4K/60, I doubt it would be worthwhile unless the game requirements are very modest. For 4K, you really need 12 - 16 gig of VRAM to keep it 4K friendly for a few years. Plus don't be fooled by some GPU's coming with 12 gig of VRAM, the rest of the graphics card needs to be capable, for example 256 bit memory bus or higher, I don't think a 6600 will cut it at 4K. It is a good 1080P, or 1440P GPU.
The OP hasn't even mentioned 4K I don't think.
Could be worth finding out what res he is on, but either way if his gaming is primarily 4X/strat a total platform update is his best option.
