Road Cycling

Oh I wouldn't be relying on the CO2 as a permanent fix. Just to get me home. My little CO2 cannisters have already come into use when I was cleaning my wheels up recently. My JoeBlow track pump, which got them seated with ease the first time, just couldn't get the tyres seated. Blast of CO2 got them seated right away, then topped up sealant and filled with air.

I'm leaning towards the Racer without the air as I always have my CO2/Hand pump with me anyway as it comes in handy when a friend needs a regular pump. Plus it's £20 cheaper so there is that as well

My current is the Topeak Pocket Rocket. Picked up for £11 in a Merlin or Wiggle sale.

It's by far better than the 'Topeak DA Roadie' which cost twice as much and the 'Leyzne Pressure Drive' which cost 3x and was half the pump!

Used to have everything in a saddle bag but as the domane has the the tube wrap that lives in the down tube i have a spare tube should the worst happens, dynaplug, tyre levers, two co2 canisters and the attachment, if its a long ride id have a mini pump in my jersey. I am still using the muck off pink stuff which is co2 ok acording to the bottle.

Having spent the last weekend with my brother coughing his lungs up...I have a slight cough. I think I must be ill though. Set out on a 55mi route, but changed to a 65mi route as it seemed a nice morning. First stop was 26mi in and honestly, it was the longest 39mi after that (inc another stop). Just felt so drained :( That and the crazy headwinds I had to deal with

Finally got around to making my own homemade Maurten/Styrkr mix before my 75 miler yesterday.

(Link if anyone wants a photo)

I went with:

1000g maltodextrin
800g fructose
60g electrolytes
100g glutamine

Makes a 20x serving batch, and costs about 90p per serving. Gives around 90g carbs per serving, so on par with SiS Beta/Maurten etc

No complaints from first outing. Just tastes ‘sweet’ like Maurten and Styrkr.

Thats basically what I have made but sans the electrolytes and glutamine. Whats the glutamine for? I added some salt to mine.

The Styrkr stuff has it in, and read a few times that it can be beneficial. Only works out at about 5g per serving, so probably isn't doing that much.

Hope you fight it off swiftly mate. Yeah the winds... They where 'interesting'!

Weather was pretty good here - so of course went out to find some rain! Thankfully only bit showery in places but otherwise fantastic riding! The winds not as strong as expected so the long route the club had planned went ahead... I stupidly thought we'd take advantage of the monster tailwind and come back along the main road making it a 4 hour ride... Nope! Someone wanted to avoid the main road, so it turned into a 6 hour (7 hours out the house) ride which was probably an hour too long for me. Legs are spent and still pretty fatigued today, pretty much empty on the commute. ZRL tomorrow is going to hurt!

Maybe should have done another 20 miles to make it an imperial as wasn't feeling too bad legs & energy wise, but my arse was in tatters... Did cross off a climb I've meant to do for a while (Pengenfford), I've only ridden it the other way and know the road from a long time ago (pre-cycling). Not the most interesting of roads/climbs - 3 miles at 4% along a 'main' kinda road... Didn't push on - the headwind was enough of a test - I sat on the front trying to keep the group together and most of them with me (7 of us out). Descent was fun - 6 miles downhill, but had to pedal half of it due to the winds! :)

How did you package it? One of the useful things about the gels is that they're easy to open and use while moving

have you considered using TriCarb mix?

I did see that on their site, and noted that it was similar to what I was making.
I guess in a way, it should be pretty similar to Maurten etc but in a simpler/unbranded way perhaps?

First chain gang of the year later, so will give the homemade stuff another go. AND IT'S DRY!!!!!

Smash it and give us some feedback
I'm very tempted to buy that tricarb add electrolytes etc and mix it ... Looks like a half price what u buy off the shelf or even cheaper

@bastic yeh felt great all ride this evening. But of course it chucked it down just before we headed off. Bloody country!

Tbh, I doubt you can go wrong with making your own. Dextrose is dextrose etc. They might have a slightly different ratio, but it's all the same stuff.

I've still got a fair bit of Styrkr mix too, so on bigger rides, I'm taking one bottle with that, and one with my mix.
