Just an FYI regarding MB support for 9800x3d, I was concerned that my new Asrock X870e Nova Wifi would need a bios update and asked Asrock support, they informed me that my board would support the 9800x3d out of the box but there would be an optimized bios released in the coming weeks. Hope this helps.
Ah, that's great to hear. I see my board has the v3.06 sticker on it and there is a bios file on the ASrock website already for 9800x3d optimisations (v3.10). I assumed I was going to have to bios flashback this with no CPU inserted, glad I don't now.

Wish all manufacturers would do that. took me ages to find the date on my new gigabyte motherboard and lo and behold... it was made a week before the bios that would enable Ryzen 9000 cpu's. sigh.
Hate flashing the bios, especially when all you have to indicate if it's worked is a little blinky light.

If I'm gaming at 1440p, and plan to pick up a 4080S or 5080 when they drop, is there any point paying the premium on this? It's hard to parse all the benchmarks and improvement claims when the majority are 1080p low. What other options are out there that are more financially sound? I'm not against paying the premium to future proof but if it's pointless I'm also happy to save some money or invest it elsewhere in the build.
If youre talking about the mobo then no, it offers generally no performance gain. Mostly just quality of life stuff

As much as I want to jump on the band waggon today seeing this is making me hold out for the beast it will surely be, rough few months trying not to buy a 9800x3d
I bet +/- 1% performance in gaming for a lot more wattage and cost. Good for production tasks though.

I see OcUK has raised the price of 7800X3D to £419.99... 9800X3D going to be £449.99 I take it???

Very nice, but I'm going to grab a 9800X3D anyway, I no longer use my desktop (5950x) for work related stuff, and tbh the heat it and the GPU pumps out makes the room uncomfortable at times so the 9950X3D isn't quite so appealing to me.

In some of the 9800X3D reviews, when gaming the CPU is running nice and relatively cool, that's much more tolerable for me. Of course I've just ordered an MSI MPG x870e, and it's got a really nice and easy temperature profile for PBO (see from 8:20 in kitguru review of the board). So who knows ;)

Old gen and new gen nearly same price.. I very very rarely buy Intel, but for us customers - I sure hope they release something good next time..

I'm considering whether to replace the 7600X for the 9800X3D for my SFF. I game at 1440p with a 4070 Super however, with all the benchmarks being tested at 1080p with a 4090 etc would I see much of a benefit in FPS from it?

You'll see a decent uplift in 0.1% and 1% lows if you switch, average FPS will increase too but may depend on certain games you play, if you experience dips in game then the new CPU will eliminate that.

Oh yeah competition would be good tbh, but my current 5950x was somewhere around £750-£800 at launch, so if the 9800X3D is lets say 55-60% of that, considering inflation, it doesn't seem quit so bad...
