Drone for a 6 year old

Hi all, my 6 year old son has started his Christmas list and is obsessed about getting a drone for Xmas.

Can anyone recommend one that a 6 year old can use? All the drone I've found are for 8/9+. Does anyone have a younger child who can actually fly one?

The battery life seems terrible on most of them, is that standard?

And what will you do when he crashes it in 2 seconds and starts bawling as its broken? Don't think a 6 year old would have the ability to correct mid flight lol when they all have stability problems unless you pay money.
But yes battery life is horrible unless you spend silly money

My nephew could fly a DJI drone at 6, they're super basic and partly-fly themselves, it's really just more about directing them where to go.... but that was under supervision and it wasn't his drone.

I think he just had some cheap Chinese indoor drone off amazon - just get a cheap basic thing that can be flown up the stairs and crashed a lot! And maybe let him try your own drone under supervision if you buy a proper one.
 
The cheap drones are difficult to fly and will take some learning. The expensive ones are super easy.
How much do you want to spend? Personally, I'd get him one of the little £30 jobbies and see if he takes to it. Make sure to buy spare propellors and batteries though.

We got our 9 year old a cheap Smyths £20-30 drone it only flies for 6-7 minutes but it's light and hard to break things with. Fine as a toy and you're not committing much money if they get bored.

Slightly more expensive than the usual "toy" drones, but probably the cheapest option for something a little more advanced.

No GPS, but it uses the same optical tech as some of the DJI drones for keeping position relative to the ground.

Some limitations in terms of range/altitude (it's limited to IIRC 20m altitude, and it uses your phone's wifi signal so that has a big impact on range).

We got our son one a few years ago, along with a bluetooth game controller to connect to the phone (well, tablet at the time), and it's pretty easy to fly, holds position quite well (if it's not too windy!), comes with prop guards for indoor flight, and is small and light enough that it's not really going to damage anything it crashes into.

Edit: yes, battery life is pretty pants - about 12 mins I believe. Problem is that bigger batteries are heavier, which means you need a bigger, more expensive drone, and once you get out of the "toy" category, you need a pilot registration etc.

Get him a cheap indoor only one. Legally it's classed as a aircraft and as such attracts all sorts of regulation and law https://register-drones.caa.co.uk/drone-code. Also, it can create hassle for other drone hobbyists as nothing panics people more than seeing drones in residential areas (even though it (subject to the above) is legal) . which then attracts more law and regulations and restricts things even more.

They are also pretty expensive and cheap amazon ones are likely to be blown off course and crash
