Which old games are still fun to play now?

I'm looking to pick up a few older games because I generally really enjoy them. I'm going to get the Warcraft Remastered bundle but I'm looking for other options. I mainly like RPG and strategy games.

I guess you need to define 'old' but a couple of RPG or strategy classics (to me) include KOTOR 1/2 and HOMM 3/4 (I know 4 wasn't loved by all but it was my introduction to the series), Pharaoh if you're into city builder type strategy games.

It really depends on what you mean by old.

Classic RPGs are a particularly good category (as is strategy) to go back to. Many of these games are not reliant on graphical bells and whistles. I've listed some classics below that I think are still incredibly playable today. They are not let down by graphics but some of the UI and gameplay decisions might be a bit of a shock.

RPGS

Baldurs Gate I & II
Planescape Torment
KOTOR I & II
Fallout I & II
Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines

Strategy

Alpha Centauri
The first 3 XCOM games
Stronghold Crusader
Empire Earth
Rise of Nations

Personally I think all of these are still incredibly playable. There are some classics if you go back further but some of those really need a lot more patience to get past some of their dated idiosyncrasies

The oldest/best is Doom 2, the gameplay is timeless and it has a huge supply of gorgeous modded wads. If anyone is curious, watch Zero Master play the Sunder .wad, I have the gold armour on Doom Eternal and I don't even bother attempting Sunder, I fail like 3 difficulties below that in UV pistol starts.

I wonder if they just happened to make one of the GOATS right off the bat by chance, or if because Doom was 'first' reality bends around it a bit and we just assume the way it did things was the way to go?

Diablo 2 is still easily the GOAT arpg, and D2 resurrected is competent from what I remember - I had(have?) a few high level toons on there, it was great. And it looks good enough with the new assets

I agree Doom 2 still plays very well today especially if you add in GLDoom or similar for slightly more refined graphics.

Going back another decade, Manic Miner and Chuckie Egg are brilliant fun. Even the graphics are fine on the eyes cause it’s retro!

currently playing the 20th anniversary classic world of warcraft edition, feels so familiar and easy tio get lost in, looks great on UHD, we're forced to play alliance on the PVP server we are on, because Horde side is so well populated, this will mean plenty of other players to kill, I'm nelf priest, and my son, and his friend, are rogue and druid, both nelfs, I think that we are going to have some fun, at least I can shadow meld when they are stealthed, dunno if his druid mate will go feral though, because they will both be competing for gear then, which would suck

Skyrim
KoToR
Mass Effect

They've all ben remastered if you want eye candy.
The original ME 1 is very clunky with heavy RPG tones, far more than later ME games. It kind of morphed into an action shooter with some RPG mechanics as it went through the sequels, but the remastered versions are ace, look good, and are cheap now too. An easy 50 hours gameplay.

how old do you want to go?

I still play sensible soccer, speed ball 2 and micromachines imo they have aged really well.. and kick off 2 is still my 2nd favourite game of all time.

then through emulation regularly play super side kicks, shuuz,.shoot the bull, hat trick and world class bowls.

strategy based. megalomania, north and south,. populous and powermonger

Mid 90s onwards is my era.

I know some of those names. I'll have to check them out.
