How are there suddenly so many people who can afford over £3k on a GPU??

I feel like if a £3k+ gaming GPU was on shelves a few years ago , before the mining 3xxx series stuff, they wouldn't have sold many at all .

That's an immense amount of money just so you can turn some ray tracing on in games.

Especially when I've had that ability for the past 10 months (and other people longer than that) to do that at maximum FPS for £1519.

I think there will be a lot of buyer’s remorse this gen especially those who are paying the early scalper tax.

Did but any chance you select the unlock voltage control in after burner or in the Nvidia app. When you do this it will drop the base clocks to about 1800 MHz.

I did not, didn't go anywhere near the voltage just the core and mem clocks.

It’s mad… there must be a limited population, but 5090 drops have been far less.

The 5080 mad buyers are starting to dry up, eBay listings are not shifting/selling, loads of relisting going on and the eBay asking price is dropping too close to the UK retailers’ asking price.

The GPU does more than gaming. nVidia xx90 cards are the best value general compute cards for AI, video and any other GPU workload, by an absolute country mile. The 32GB VRAM in particular has all the AI people after them.

2k may be a lot for gaming, but it's peanuts for a professional tool.

Does anybody remember any mainstream electronics retailers jacking up the prices just because theres a supply shortage? I dont remember it happening when there was a shortage of series x’s. It just absolute scumbag behaviour, no better than actual scalpers.

Worse than scalpers imo. Scalpers have to pay the etailors scalped prices to get a hold of the card in the first place, or at very best they will pay the rrp. Retailers buy the cards at less than rrp to sell at rrp, for a profit. That still isn't good enough for them though so they then add onto it their scalping tax. Ya know, because they know the cards are so hard to get hold of, so they know they've got you by the balls, kinda scenario. Brutal behavior.

Good to hear you had a decent outcome. A lot of people have horror stories of RMAs where they wair two months, then just get the same faulty ("repaired") card back.

I had bought a certified refurbished Gigabyte 4090 Gaming from another vendor in early 2023. It ran fine (despite coil whine you could hear in the next house) for 5 months, then unexplainedly died. I sent the card back for RMA fully expecting an odessey of BS. A week later the outfit replied stating the card was, in fact, dead and under warranty. They offered me the choice of a 4090 Strix or Auros WF as a replacement and even extended the warranty with then another year -- I took the Strix. Best RMA outcome ever.

Wow a strix 4090. You hit jackpot on that one..i had a gigabyte 4090 it had no coil whine to speak of but i just didnt like it compared to my strix. My strix had coil whine but i still preferred it over the giga 4090.

I mean, I've used chatgpt. It's good, it's useful indeed. But I don't need my own GPU to run it. The server that runs it won't be doing so off 5090s? So what is it that the AI people are doing?

I don't know either and I work in an AI-adjacent field in tech. To be more specific, I understand quite closely what people are doing with "AI" (individually and in corporates), but I dont know why they need an ultra high-end GPU. And most of the people I know buy time on a slice from service providers. I have access to four 4090s if I want at work scaling through Azure.

If you're looking for homebrew examples, I was recently looking to offload a rental property recenty in a saturated holiday let market. I set up a few automation protocols and trained a simple model I built with a comp dataset to tell me when the best time to sell was and take care of some of the initial outreach emails using an LLM. This is just non-boundary pushing GAI, all run in cloud services -- I could have also just used somethingblike a 2060 to run locally but setup would have taken forever.

Running and training AI models. I run several local models to assist with my coding.

VRAM is king for running models. This is why the 5090 has 32Gb.

I can't have code being sent out to be ingested by ChatGPT or other external service. Also using local models you can fine tune them on your own data (if you have enough VRAM!)

The servers will be running off the datacenter GPUs that make 5090s look cheap.

I have seem some wacky analogies/comparisons in my time but a 5090 compared to opioids and laxatives that's a new high
