Does my 3080 founders need some tlc?

MX-4 was cheap, and very effective. Seems to be the best all round TP you can buy that isn't junk.
I ran out of MX-4 in 2019 lol, only have my tube of MX-6 left so couldn't do a head-to-head on the 3080
But MX-6 is a bit too liquid, and my 3080 definitely started to suffer from pump out

ptm7950 would be the best in this instance though...would be what i'd go with if i ever open up another gpu for a repaste

i used the MX-6 on my 3080 would not recommend

you'd need a thicker/more viscous thermal paste
something like the gelid gc extreme, or thermalright tfx
Or syy 157 never heard of ptm7950 don't think it was known 3 years ago

ptm7950 you say, very interesting. I noticed thats what Sapphire are using in there 9070/XT models as well. So its just like a thermal pad that you cut to size and stick on?
I imagine its incredibly thin and a pain to work with though. Challenge potentially accepted.

i've never used that paste before, so just recommending products that i know :x
yeah ptm7950 was pretty recent i believe, but would be what i'd use now if i were to repaste a gpu

ok so I have some 2.0 Gelid extreme pad and 1.5 Artic TP-3 pad on the way (1.5mm Gelid was not in stock) and will just have to measure whats on there after opening up.
My nephew has a 4g of MX-6 that I can have, so I might just try that and see what happens? If it lasts a few months I would be happy with that, have an eye on the AMD 9070XT anyway, but if this was to work, I would happily keep the 3080!

Any major objections to the above? I note ptm7950 is better but I have pasted a lot CPU in my time so likely more comfortable with a paste on my first GPU. (and the MX-6 is free, always helps)

Needs the thermal pads changing. Used a guide online, a bunch of Gelid pads, and took 20% off my temps and its now barely audible - before I could hear it several rooms away at full load.

Yeah I should be good on the cleaning side, I have a bottle of 99.9 IPA and some microfibre cloths. I dont have an airblower or any compressed air cans but I don't think dust will be an issue at all, it's in a filtered case in a filtered room, but it has been 3 years I guess. We shall see! Thanks for all the advice and confidence boost guys.

Also, im not going to bother redoing the pads on the backplate (rear of memory) google seems to show it has no effect what so ever on temps of the VRAM.

TLDR - new front pads = -14c improvement, new front and back = -16c improvement, so doing the back not hugely worth it, however I expect to see a ~-20c improvement in my 3080 due to age.

it's the core temps that you're struggling with and your memory temps are actually okay (86c)
(though i'm not sure if the memory temps are kept artificially low because the gpu is power throttling itself)

ptm 7950 is best for gpu, no pump out

So I took the old girl apart and it didnt really go very well.

1st attempt was with 2mm pads all round (as in the front pcb) plus a repaste of course.
It then was much worse than before, thermal throttling even at 35% power limit, very disheartened.

2nd attempt, I just repasted as I figured maybe I just didnt do a very good job, but the result was the same, but I noticed very little thermal paste on the heatsink, so....

3rd attempt I changed the pads on the memory to 1.5mm (as advised in the link I gave yesterday, my card is date dated end of 2021 so likely does need 1.5mm not 2mm) and once again repasted, now it runs slightly better than before but will still thermal throttle over 75% power limit.
I've given up for now, but not sure what i'm doing wrong, all I can try really is 1.5m pads all round, Im tightening the leaf spring as far as it will go, without going crazy so I don't think it's that. It even idles 20c lower now and fan stop will even kick it, but under load it quickly overheats again. shrug.

and this is how it was when I first opened her up, no suprise it was over heating haha.

And thats how its running now, but will thermal throttle in game pretty quickly.

you need to open it up again and see what the paste looks like, see if its making contact and full coverage
