5080 & 5090 Coil Whine Thread

There are a lot of variables, I think the user's hearing and the openness of their PC case have the biggest impact. I moved from a Fractal Define Mini (quiet focused case) to a Fractal North, which is all mesh with a pretty open front. My current GPU had quite a bit of coilwhine and I never really heard it until I moved to this new case. Airflow cases drop temps which allow fans to run slower to they can be as quiet as more restrictive cases due to fans running slower HOWEVER, with an open case, you are way more vulnerable to audible coil whine.

I also don't care about coil whine at very high framerates (i.e above 120fps) as I will often cap to slightly above that. Most cards will squeal at hundreds of FPS in my experience e.g on uncapped title screens.
it's funny you should say that. I was playing league the other day and I saw the framerate spike to something like 1050 fps and there was not a peep. But on a menu screen for some reason like at 400-500fps there is a very very quiet angry bee. I could barely hear it.

On another note the other day I had a scare. there was a strange rattling sound coming from the card. I thought that can;t be like coil whine as I never heard it that low and slow. As the minutes went by it got louder. So I played around with fan control and notice it changed in loudness and noise. I thought please don;t tell me I got a sketchy fan and have to RMA it given the current situation. So I looked inside and I saw something stuck between the fan and the heatsink. it was thin and transparent. In my excitement to get my card installed, I forgot to take that thin plastic wrapper that is on the fans central spindle. it had worked loosed and went inside. I pulled it out and everything was back to normal.

the moral of the story is...IDK so just carry on

:P

I could be wrong but I think the frequency increases with FPS, so it's always there but beyond a certain point it's inaudible to humans and really just annoying your dog .Hence why they might be quiet at 60fps. Buzzy at 120fps. Squealy at 400fps and 'quiet' beyond that.

One of the reasons my TUF 5080 was louder than my TUF 3080 was I could run way more games at 120fps+, especially if you use framegen.

Personal experience is that it increases alongside the voltage and clock speed. Which tbf are usually hand in hand with higher FPS, but I've played games at 120fps with no whine, and several at 60fps with noticeably worse whine (and in those it was due to higher clocks/drawing more power). For a long time I thought that undervolting was the most effective solution, but limiting clock/boost speed has had the highest impact. At that point though you're making the call on how much you're willing to hobble the GPU to reduce noise.

After a failed attempt with a 9070XT Taichi, which had atrocious coil whine, I have managed to get hold of a Palit 5080 Gamerock (not OC) and it is absolutely superb. Very minimal coil whine even with the side panel off the PC case and pumping away at 100% utilization.

Really happy, Palit have earned my business for the next upgrade cycle with this card.

I think we should like video record cards with extreme coil whine. It would be like a darker version of my dad would kick your dads azz.

Aka my coil whine is the worst, no it isn't mine is...

Then release day strix 4090 enters the chat and we would be like...

Then release day Asus 3090ti would enter the chat and would be like 'hold mah beer'

I had a 1080Ti FE that I could use to play actual music by loading up Witcher 3 and spinning the camera around.

I did take a video of it with my phone camera but it doesn't do it justice when you play it back.

My 5080FE initially had a bit of coil whine, but this seems to have settled now after a few days. It was more obvious in my mesh case on the desk, but nothing too bad.

Bonjour

Glad you got a card that was to your satisfaction.
It's so frustrating as it just proves that coilwhine is a SOLVED problem. There is no need for it to be bad. I just wish there was some consistency, i.e certain brands were a given for low whine.

It's not like there's even anything meaningful to gain from using whiny inductors. This MSI card is *considerably* smaller than the Asus I had. Clocks near-as-dammit the same and is way quieter.

Palit Gamerock 5090:

Mild whine in certain specific situations (mostly loading screens). No whine audible over fan noise during gameplay. Noise in general is pretty decent.

A couple more data points:

ASUS ROG Astral 5090 OC: Horrible coil whine. The worst I have ever heard. Even with the case fully closed up and a desk fan going I could hear it. The rear 4th fan was also both loud and has an unpleasant pitch, so needs a fan curve applied. Those points aside this is a really nice card. Seriously good build quality and temps were great - high 60s. Amazing cooling performance considering it would happily chomp through a little over 600 watts. I think a copy with less coil whine and a good fan curve would be top tier (and I realise it's priced accordingly).

Zotac 5090 AMP Extreme Infinity: Moderate to severe coil whine. The whine was a little better than my TUF 4090, but still worse than I would like. Probably at a level someone could live with though. However the main issues with this model are not coil whine but fan noise and the cooling performance. The Zotac is a big card and quite thick, but is still noticeably smaller than the Astral or Aorus (both of which are absolute breeze blocks). It's somewhere between those two massive models and the thinner cards like the Trio and Ventus. The three fans it has that are noticeably smaller and significantly noisier than the Astral or Aorus - more like the 5080 Ventus and worse than the 5080 Trio. I read the reviews where it noted that the Zotac seems to perform like an FE model notwithstanding being significantly bulkier. I've never used a 5090 FE, but honestly if it's as loud as the Zotac I'd probably steer clear. The Zotac felt like it needed circa 2,000 RPMs to keep the card somewhat cool - the Astral could do the same job at much lower RPMs and getting temps down much better. I don't really get why the Zotac is underperforming - on paper it seems better than this, which is a shame as this was the card I really wanted.
