5080 & 5090 Coil Whine Thread

A couple more data points:

ASUS ROG Astral 5090 OC: Horrible coil whine. The worst I have ever heard. Even with the case fully closed up and a desk fan going I could hear it. The rear 4th fan was also both loud and has an unpleasant pitch, so needs a fan curve applied. Those points aside this is a really nice card. Seriously good build quality and temps were great - high 60s. Amazing cooling performance considering it would happily chomp through a little over 600 watts. I think a copy with less coil whine and a good fan curve would be top tier (and I realise it's priced accordingly).

Zotac 5090 AMP Extreme Infinity: Moderate to severe coil whine. The whine was a little better than my TUF 4090, but still worse than I would like. Probably at a level someone could live with though. However the main issues with this model are not coil whine but fan noise and the cooling performance. The Zotac is a big card and quite thick, but is still noticeably smaller than the Astral or Aorus (both of which are absolute breeze blocks). It's somewhere between those two massive models and the thinner cards like the Trio and Ventus. The three fans it has that are noticeably smaller and significantly noisier than the Astral or Aorus - more like the 5080 Ventus and worse than the 5080 Trio. I read the reviews where it noted that the Zotac seems to perform like an FE model notwithstanding being significantly bulkier. I've never used a 5090 FE, but honestly if it's as loud as the Zotac I'd probably steer clear. The Zotac felt like it needed circa 2,000 RPMs to keep the card somewhat cool - the Astral could do the same job at much lower RPMs and getting temps down much better. I don't really get why the Zotac is underperforming - on paper it seems better than this, which is a shame as this was the card I really wanted.
Yeah, put the 5090 Astral in tonight, looks great, goes really well with my case colour, thought perfect. Like the Amps software which was all perfect...run 3d mark for a quick look from stock and...whats that noise I thought...crap, havent heard coil whine in years...
Returning a Palit, all boxed, but no coil whine I could hear. Got 3O days with OC, does coil whine settle? Or just ur luck?
Really like this card as well...
What to do...

I've got coil whine on mine, but it's only at fully maxed out GPU usage/clocks/voltage and really need to focus on it to hear it, but tbh, it's been like that since I got it, I reckon with Asus, you just gotta accept it's gonna have some coil whine, if it really affects you I'd return it and see if you can grab a Gigabyte Aorus or try you luck in the lottery for another Astral

So does that mean you got both a Palit and an Astral, and the Palit has no coil whine while the Astral has a lot?

Are we doing 5070 ti’s in here as well? Got the Palit GamingPro OC. Would put the coil whine at 6 or 7/10 for strength, enough to have me immediately looking at tweaking performance. PSU is Corsair SF850. Sort of doesn’t matter though because of the comically bad fan motor noise, absolutely not a keeper (wasn’t ordered from OC).

Palit had none (575 W) may matter? Astral has some but I didnt notice it whilst gaming, just on benchmarking on 3d mark. But really like the Astral, quality, looks great, runs great, OC is great, quiet enough with fan tweak, so will see how I get on over the next wee while. Still have an open order with the rain forrest on a Suprim LC. If that had actualy been shipped last week, i wouldnt have bought Astral, but still glad I did now.

actually, its not present really when running a game - i just put on the 3dmark speedtest which uses 600w - my pc is super silent though - its 35dba from where i sit with the test running - I tried indy jones and its pulling 450w but the coil whine wasnt present.

I think if your criteria is that there should be no discernible coil whine even under completely uncapped scenarios (i.e benchmarks) then you're probably in for a bad time. Personally, I'm only really concerned about high-load 120fps performance as that's what I will experience semi-regularly and that's what I test to for coil whine when I get a new card. Also, consider adding a global frame cap to prevent things like title screens hitting 600fps and whining like crazy. I use a 120Hz 4K screen and don't play any super-competitive insanely high FPS games so I can get by with a ~150fps global cap.

Dear Overclockers, I am wondering about the Inno3D 5080 x3 /OC Cards. Any experiences with those cards regarding coil whine or bad temps/fan noise?

Best regards
Robin

Yes I recently purchased one. My impression of the coil whine is that it's decently low. Tested in Doom Eternal: more or less inaudible at 120fps. Slightly noticable at 240fps and then more so at 400fps. But even during the notorious Witcher 3 menu at 1200 fps: while noticeable it's still relatively OKish. I would say definitely lower coil whine than my previous 3080 SuprimX which was already decently quiet. I would be surprised if there were any 5080s that would have significantly less coil whine as this card. Even at 400fps sound of the fan @ 1400rpm is louder than the whine, although the whine and the fan noise can be clearly distinguished one from another.

Regarding the fan noise I think the biggest issue is that the minimum rpm is very high: 1400 rpm. (it also supports 0 rpm, but the minimum speed when fans are spinning is 1400 rpm)
I have discussed why I consider this an issue in this thread

Also the noise characteristics of the fans at 1400rpm could be described as "cheap". You don't hear smooth "wooosh" (blades hitting the air) but instead mostly "vrrrrr" sound of the lower quality bearings. It's not terrible or anything, I think most people would be fine with it. But if you are noise conscious then it may irritate you (as it does irritate me)
Since I added 120mm fan at the backside venting area of the card, the card's fans don't really need to go higher than 1400rpm and the card is still pretty chill. So you could say, that with the extra fan the card can operate decently quiet under full load (aside from the mildly annoying sound characteristics of the fans). Without the extra fan it was considerably louder but still not noticable as long as there was some sound playing (even on speakers / without headphones) While during no sound passages even the 1400 rpm is definitely noticeable to me.

I returned the Zotac 5080 Solid OC and got a Zotac 5080 AMP. Both have the exact same coil whine. I've returned that one too.

When you hear it with the case closed, it's unacceptable to me.
I'll wait for an Aorus Master. There's stock right now, but it's very inflated, almost €1,800.

If you're interested, I found a German forum that also covers this topic, including user experiences. It's easy to read with Google Translate.

I can't work out what 'beeps and rattles' are  Maybe squealing and buzzing badly translated?

Youre right - my 4090 had no coil whine - then i tried the same speedmark benchmark last week prior to ordering the new card and i could hear it whining a bit in that test .
