Oculus Rift

Still got my CV1, fully working. Even has a brand new cable that Oculus gave me after I complained they were not available to buy after my cable broke. All boxed up. Maybe it'll be worth something, someday... :D

I was thinking the exact same mate, hopefully in 20-30 years they'll be collector's items and worth a fortune!

Especially since CV1 was the very first consumer HMD.

Thanks again mate, really appreciate it.
Truth is my rift is immaculate, been sitting in a drawer for 7 years.
I was disappointed with the image quality from day 1 and after only a few software updates I was no longer getting stable frame rates with even mild super sampling so gave up before really giving it a go.
Now I can push the super sampling it looks ok enough to try again.

If I actually get into it this time I'll spend some money a newer headset.

Cheers.

Sorry to keep reanimating this thread but I'm kind of enjoying using the Rift this time.
Watched the Smithsonian tour of Venice and spent quite a while in Deckard's apartment which reminded me I have some Blu-Rays that include the 3D version of the films.
I tried Bigscreen and Skybox but they wouldn't detect them as 3D which I discovered is down to being in MVC format instead of the common SBS or OU.
From what I've read I can use my current MPC-HC/MADVR config but I need to buy 'Virtual Desktop'.
As it does not seem to available from the Oculus store for the CV1 anymore, could anyone please tell me if the Steam version will still work ok?

Thanks.

The only player I know that plays MVC 3D is 4XVR on the Quest. However you can convert MVC to 3D SBS using some well known video tools.

Cheers for the reply.
I'll look into converting them, thanks.
Ideally was hoping to play them straight from disc like 4XRV is supposed to do but it doesn't look like it's Rift compatible.

Thanks yet again.
Very interesting read and quite a few suggestions for games that still work on the CV1 as well.
Still trying to find that game that keeps me playing for more than just a quick session at a time so that link is extremely useful.
Cheers.

This is a game I've been playing on the CV1 for 8 years and still never get tired of it.

Very cool, I do really like interesting environments to just chill in.
Downloaded the files.

On a different point, I take it the 'Virtual Desktop' app adds more functionality than just the Oculus Dash Desktop?
Cheers.

Yes, the steam version of virtual Desktop has a load more functions than the dash desktop. It can also improve the 2D to 3D Reshade experience with curved screens and headlock mode.

To be honest if they had issued an updated CV1 with exactly the same form factor and audio with higher resolution screens and better lenses I'd have been be all over it. But things have moved on quite a bit since then, though the Bigscreen Beyond 2 does seem to be a spiritual successor in that regard (at least with the audio strap), in terms of comfort and lightness.

I had a three camera setup for the CV1 and the tracking was perfect, and felt smoother than Lighthouse based tracking.

I still think the CV1 controllers were probably the most robust and well balanced of all the VR controllers I've ever tried.

I'm a bit out of date on those Oculus Rift sets, last itme I had was CV1.
I loved to play Elite Dangerous with it, but resolutions wasn't great on dashboard text etc

What is the latest set that can be purchased?
What has been improved since then?
Is res better now and all text can be easily read?

Quest 3 is the best value for money. It utterly blows away the CV1 in terms of clarity, and you can do it wirelessly.

Not only can all the text now be read clearly (without having to resort to tricks like changing the hud colour to green 'cause there were more green subpixels on the CV1 OLED screens), but you don't even have to turn your head fully to read the text - the lenses are so clear that you can read text right at the edge of them.

You will not believe the difference compared to the CV1 visually.

You will need to get an extra headstrap for the Q3 as the default one is poor, and the headset is quite front heavy so a headstrap with a battery on the back nicely balances that out as well as getting extra play time.

Nice! :)
So this is the latest one?
What is the resolution, what GPU you need to run Elite smoothly?

2064x2208 Per-eye resolution.

You'll need a relatively modern GPU and CPU to run Elite smoothly in VR, but it's difficult to say exactly what as it depends on the render resolution and detail level you set. Basically the better the GPU the better the experience.

There's lots of things you can tweak and three different wireless streaming methods plus direct cable, all of which can affect how well it runs.
