Double Glazing Salesmen Rant

The last time I had double glazing was 1985.
At the time there was a programme on TV going through all their sales techniques which was helpful when we called salesman in.
We are now in the market for new windows and door at the front so the first to come today was a bloke from Euroseal.
I said before you start I don't want a hard sell, you give us a price and that's the price, I don't want you ringing your Manager to see if there are any deals and then you magically get it down by 33% etc.
He did all the sales techniques, he offered my wife the pretty pictures, he had me helping with the measuring, he rang his Manager saying we can use it as a show house for the product.
He then rang his manager again asking when it can be done, "we can do it May 28th and 29th but to get it at the reduced price they have to sign now".
During all this I'm putting my head in my hands or going outside to play with next doors cat.
It was 90 minutes before I kicked him out, I can't believe I sat there that long listening to the same stuff I heard back in 1985.

So the price for just the front windows and door was £27,500 but if they could take photo's and put an advertisement board up they would do it for £15,900 :)

£15,900?!

I paid just over £1800 for 4 large (1.5m wide by 2.5high) double glazed windows including installing!

We have a local firm and just have a chat with the owner when we want anything, eventually worked our way through every window in the house.

I think it was about £1500 for an average sized window.

haha, I had two salesman come around to quote for installing ventilation and humidity control systems and it was the same crap mate; they try to drag it on as long as possible, must be some research that the longer they stay the more likely you are to sign

I also had a separate quote for full double glazed replacements (not retrofit) and it came to $28k (we've got 17 windows across two stories). And this was for just your basic aluminum frame with low e double glazing, if I ask for PVC thermally broken frames or triple glazing that would add another $6k

We had 10 windows (one a bay), 2 very large inc, plus a new back door and it came in at £6.8k back in 2016. That was with Anglian and we signed up for the 1yr interest free scheme and paid it before it ran out.

Do you actually "need" new Windows or just want?

If it's problems with existing Windows, most can be resolved with adjustments / new seals and even replacement panes etc - will likely work out much cheaper.

If it's "because energy savings" then don't fall for that either, as the payback period from even old double glazing to new double or triple glazed windows is a huge amount of time.

usually the hinges need replacing but people will buy whole new windows because of a few mm gap thats easily solved.

8 years ago we had Euroseal quote for a new front door. Did exactly the same - I can only offer you this price if you sign while I'm here.
Told him - looks like I'm not buying from you then.
Their super cheap price if I bought right then was still a ripoff anyway.
Absolutely scummy practice. I wouldn't have bought from them after that display even if they had been well priced.

The next time you invite one of these leeches in to your house tell them you're going to record it on your phone. If they don't consent to this then tell them to jog on.

A few years ago I had one in to replace the tatty old wooden framed windows as I was selling the house. Told them I wanted the lowest price, basic windows with no frills or BS. First price - £6,500 which was reduced to £4,500 when he saw the look on my face. Further reduced to £3,250 after the scripted "call to the boss for a better deal". I was disgusted with that level of profit the meek would have paid and told him no thanks, please leave. I ended up paying £2,000 from a company that supplies the windows and gets a local fitter to fit them.

That industry has a bad rep for a reason.

When a large company knocked recently I thought I'd let them quote assuming they would just give me a price as it's a standard Wimpey wood frame, stone clad mid-terrace same the hundreds all around. No they had to arrange a sales visit at which point I said sod off.

I'll just order them myself with a local company. 4 easy to fit windows. The front door will need a hand from a friend that's fitted some recently. The patio doors may be the one bit I pay someone to fit.
