EV general discussion

See, my experience is very different* with only brakes and suspension bits needing doing over all our cars for the last 20 years. I guess ICE specific would be one exhaust, an alternator on one of my wifes cars and my MX5. I did also have a clutch master cylinder go, again on the MX5 but that is a 20+ year old car. Oh, and a clutch on my Octavia but that was remapped and took a lot of stick! Still, that is over 20 years worth so not too bad!

Funnily enough I saw your name pop up on speakEV today while I was looking into charging issues on an iPace as one of the people at work has one that won't AC charge. Did you ever get to the bottom of your charging issues as the thread just went silent?

*excluding my fist car as that was a basket case that had sat for 18 months covered in salt and with a very sketchy past! I put a new carb on that and had a set of valves.
really? i thought i replied to it... i guess i should do then..... yeah it was my zappi . the installer used the harvi wireless hub to connect the grid CT clamp to the zappi (which is reccomended against doing in the zappi install guide) and the connection kept dropping out which then caused the zappi to .... the bed and then stop charging. i got them to come back and wire it up as reccomended, and they also replaced my harvi at the same time as well as it *should* have been fine.

oh and the wifes i3 also had a dead 12v battery which was also causing issues.... there is 1 advantage of an ice car. you usually know when a 12v is past its best as it starts to struggle turning the engine.... no such warning in the i3 and no errors or anything, it just meant sometimes it caused a wobbler when intelligent octopus kept starting and stopping the intelligent charging on some nights. (touch wood) its been fine ever since.

but i will admit it was stressful at the time (but not the cars fault ;) )

edit...........
Jaguar get some stick in their customer support so i will give a shout out to Marshalls Jaguar in Cambridge here as they were great TBH!. myenergi initially insisted it was a car fault and not their end and refused to acknowedge the issue, so i booked the ipace in with marshalls who kept it overnight, did some tests and charged the car fully without issue. knowing their hourly rate i was worried they were gonna spank me but they did it all for free which was nice of them as i wasted their time.

I tend to prefer buying cars outright over leasing. Seems to me leasing costs a lot more overall.

But I guess one of the perks is if something goes wrong they need to sort it out?

I tend to go for 3 year or so old vehicles. Majority of depreciation is done by then. Like the car I have now was 3 and a half years old. It lost 15-20K from new. In 4 years I have had it it has lost about 5K :D

Same with Ioniq 5. They can be had for 16-20K now. Brand new would be around double.

I have just been buying manufacturer warranty each year. Started of £300 year. Then slowly crept up for £500. More miles and older I guess, plus inflation.

Have you got the ioniq 5? The reported 12v issue would put me off getting one outside of warranty

EV reliability due to fewer moving parts is a bit of a myth IMO. ICE parts have had R&D over many decades now. While EV's have fewer parts, the technology is still relatively new and the EV specific parts that can go wrong are big £ to replace.

The technology isn't new, all the stuff that goes into an EV has been around for decades. The implementation into cars is new, but then ICE engines are constantly being updated and changed anyway with new parts, features and so on.

No. Just doing research. Won't be getting it for at least 6 months. Maybe even 18 months.

My understanding is they did a recall where that issue was fixed? Also I always buy manufacturer approved that comes with 12 months warranty. I then extend that.

And who has ever had an issue refuelling a car?

I have not but know someone who did. Had recently change from Diesel to Petrol I think. Was on auto pilot and managed to stick in the wrong fuel. Noticed before getting back in the car what he had done. Lol.

Quite like the EV9, definitely worth a look.

It wasn't that long ago that I would have laughed at the notion of £60K Kia, the EV9 can go to £80K :D

Yeah. I like that one and would suit us. But that kind of money for a Kia? I'm good :D

That's user error. Same for running out of fuel too. Actually it's worse for an EV in that scenario and potentially battery damaging if left on a low SOC. But I meant put the filler in and having a problem actually getting fuel into the car, anyone ever had that issue :D. I'm sure someone will come back now and say "yeah, the petrol pump on the forecourt was faulty" :)

It seems to have fixed it for some but still a lot of reported issues by going off the likes of Reddit etc. Fitting an AGM battery also seems to help.

Will look at them again in a couple of years when due next to replace my car

How are people finding getting an appointment at dealers. My ionic 5 at 55mph whole car shakes until 70. Wheels are perfect so not that. My dealer closed down so tried 5 others and none are quicker than 4 weeks. Currently got hire car

My at the time new to me Countyman decided it didn't want to stop me fueling once full, and promptly ****** Tesco's finest Momentum all over the forecourt due to a faulty fuel delivery module...

After a few weeks of sitting at the Order stage, my R5 order is finally at the factory stage and I have an ETA. People on the owner groups on Facebook have said the app dates shift about a lot and some have said their dealers have given them more accurate dates that are a few weeks closer, so we'll see. It did say 14-27th July the other day so that's already a good sign.

Never had that, but had the entire power go off to the forecourt in Morrisons right in the middle of filling my father-in-laws car and they wouldn't let us go because we couldn't pay... and had no way of recording our details that wasn't electronic (they could have just used a mobile phone which we did point out at the time). Luckily it came back after 15 minutes, but someone else called the police stating they were being held hostage, though that was rather dramatic. :p

They must have been trying very hard to get the larger diesel nozzle into the smaller petrol filler opening.

I have an Ioniq 5, had it for 18 months now, i had an ICCU check last year where it went to dealers for a "recall". Think they just checked serial numbers or something perhaps it was a batch issue. As for the 12v issue, I have a battery monitor and I can keep an eye on the battery voltage, it also shows the behaviour of the charge system. During driving the battery is being charged, during the day it does little top ups to keep it above 12v. During a 24 period if I haven't drivin the car it will at some point do an hour or so charge to max.

What battery monitor do you use?

Used 1374kWh last month at an average 11.04p/kWh.

I’m gonna give the new Octopus Intelligent Drive a try. Fixed electricity at 23p and then any EV charging through the Ohme is £20 per month so I’ll use that for the Evoque and IPACE. Standing charge 4p less too.
