5080 & 5090 Coil Whine Thread

Couple of pics of the new build with the MSI Inspire. Not one for those who like a bit of vajazzle in their GPU. Reminds me of hi-fi equipment (anyone remember the Denon 3802 AVR?) so I like it.

After 2 months of ownership my FE coil whine is now less then my 4090FE coil whine was.
It's definitely got better over time. It's barely noticeable now

How have you found the fans compared to the 4090fe mate? I was happy with my 4090fe fan profile.

5090 Suprim arrived today. Pretty much no coil whine at all. If I really stretch it, it can make a very, very small noise, I'd say 1/10.

My PC and room are totally silent, so hope this adds a good data point.

Only trouble is more than ever it seems totally random. @Nitefly Suprim bought in the same week was fairly bad, even at idle. It really does seem total luck of the draw, which wasn't so much the case last gen, where certain models were generally better, or were revised and became one of the better skus half a year later.

Hi, I had the opportunity to try two SUPRIMs RTX 5090 and an AORUS RTX 5090. I stuck with the SUPRIM. I want to ask — is the coil whine on my SUPRIM acceptable? The coil whine is not a high-pitched noise. I’m not sure whether I should return the SUPRIM again and wait for another one, because for example, the SUPRIM I have now is slightly better in terms of coil whine than the second SUPRIM I returned.
This is UV - 0.900v - 2800mhz

Ultimately, only you can decide if it's acceptable. Tolerance varies hugely from person to person. I've got a small amount on my Palit 5090 under certain circumstances, mostly involving Doom Eternal. Others have been sending cards back at the slightest hint of whine.

If you think you can live with it, then live with it. It's entirely down to whether you can put up with the noise. It isn't a sign that the card's going to fail or anything.

So I received my Astral 5090 LC yesterday and everything is great, overclocking headroom seems good on this one too, build quality, temps etc, all ace.

Apart from, and you guessed it, the worst coil whine I've ever heard. No I'd say its not a whine, it's screech for help, that is so loud, system fans have to be above 70% to drone it out. I took 2 videos at 240fps cap in a game and uncapped benchmark:

So realistically before I go insane, is there any point in trying to RMA for a replacement Astral LC or do I get a refund and start playing the card lottery once stock has normalised somewhat with different brands?

I'd probably use it for a bit just to see if it dies down any. It can settle a bit after some heat cycles.

I've seen quite a lot of reports about the astral having bad coil whine but I've seen a few people saying they didn't have it much too. Probably a gamble if you RMA.

I think all the 5090s have it to some degree though. Liquid cooling might not help since you've not even got the three usual gpu fans right next to it to drown it out.

Wow, sorry to say this coil whine sounds horrible. They probably wont replace for coil whine. Your call if you wanna take a bet on it decreasing over time or just sending back for refund within your return window and then trying to get a new one.

@drago94 From that video that is one of the more quieter Suprims I have heard. Now unless you are very triggered about it and want to play musical gpu's whihc in itself is as annoying as coil whine. If that were me i would keep it but then having said that I am not suceptible to coil whine so my tolerance is much more patient. I have been using Suprim/Strix for years and they have always been part of the parcel if you wanted that particular brand and SKU.

@iiNNeX The problem is not the volume of it. The problem is the changing pitch. In my experince coil whine which dies down over time has only ever happened to me once in over 6 years and owning 60+GPU's and that was the MSI gaming trio 5080.

@JustHappy Suprim has bad coil whine at idle and gaming.

@Nitefly Astral also not the best for coil whine either.

Is it just me or does it seem to be getting worse recently.

Hi, you got the SUPRIM, right? Did you see my video and my coil whine? You said, that you have SUPRIM without coil whine. I am not lucky.
I did bud. Sorry to hear that, another unlucky person. I think @Personality+ Suprim delivered today is fine touch wood. Real luck of the draw.

So you have complete without coil whine? Can you record your SUPRIM during regular TimeSpy?
If I get time I'll sort something. I haven't tried benchmarks just various full load games. I wouldn't say no coil whine ever but at most 1/10 level during the most extreme situations.
