5080 & 5090 Coil Whine Thread

@drago94 From that video that is one of the more quieter Suprims I have heard. Now unless you are very triggered about it and want to play musical gpu's whihc in itself is as annoying as coil whine. If that were me i would keep it but then having said that I am not suceptible to coil whine so my tolerance is much more patient. I have been using Suprim/Strix for years and they have always been part of the parcel if you wanted that particular brand and SKU.

@iiNNeX The problem is not the volume of it. The problem is the changing pitch. In my experince coil whine which dies down over time has only ever happened to me once in over 6 years and owning 60+GPU's and that was the MSI gaming trio 5080.
With headphones and speakers it’s barely noticeable. But I am really shocked that there are ppl with 0 coil whine on SUPRIM

Ive had the Astral LC do loops of various 3dmark scenarios for a whole day now, lots of heat cycles etc, also gamed all of last night. Doesn't appear to be getting quieter, so its going back for refund.

Just ordered a Suprim from OCUK, lets see how this one goes.

Too many variables in play for coil whine,

If I use vsync on at 240hz 4K the pitch of the whine is significantly different to just letting the games run uncapped.

And it's even less noticeable at 120hz

For me the pitch of the whine and the loudness changes depending on whether I cap or uncap vsync.

I have my case open right now also on silent mode for the 5090 suprim.

Not annoying enough to return it though either, as I can minimise the annoyance + its quiet during desktop usage and minimal whine running topaz labs so I'm golden there.

Just when I want to go balls to the wall 4K uncapped will I have major whine issues (and I'll be wearing a headset then usually)

Just quick initial thoughts after trying it on FC25/Top Spin 2K25 and Uncharted: Legacy of thieves all at 4K native!

Edit : Minimal coil whine in two games that rely heavily on MFG for higher fps gameplay, Indiana Jones and Stalker 2 ran fine + CP2077 also

COD Black Ops 6 has a bit of whine but not that annoying was getting 4K 170fps online no DLSS Max settings

I use to own an Asus 3090ti LC which makes yours seem like a mouse.

Funny, I also had a 3090ti LC which I returned for this reason, it was actually unbearable, louder than this one even with the case panels closed lol.

ROG would tell you its a feature though :)

Hi, this is my SUPRIM.
Is it good or bad? Have you tried TimeSpy regular benchmark?

I'd be happy with that to be honest, seems pretty normal, mine was better or worse game to game, but especially worse on games without any built in additional Nvidia features like DLSS etc, so Sports games were good for running the GPU a bit more raw perhaps.

See if it changes lowering and increasing fps or turning vsync on and off - then probably in the same boat as me.

I have not tried TimeSpy Regular benchmark

I'll set it up and report back.

(I am running 4K 240hz whenever possible) or at least letting the GPU getting the max it can below that.

I did the extreme benchmark and the first GPU benchmark got me some heavy whine but the 2nd GPU test was about 5-10% not annoying. (Silent mode, stock settings) 9800X3D stock settings + 64GB RAM

I'll try the regular one now.

Regular one also had some whine - seems the high fps seems to trigger it (and make it louder + higher pitched)

In this video, my card is running at 0.900V - 2800MHz. So I’m using undervolting, and the coil whine is still there.

Twinsies!!!! I bet you have never hear a card as bad as the 3090ti LC. Mine would coil whine as soon as you powered it on. Through post and when you got to the windows sign in it would be still whining.

People don’t understand how bad and how loud the coil whine actually was on the 3090ti LC.

So I had to fight tooth and nail for it to be approved to be RMA’ed as coil whine is not actually a fault. One of OCUK competitors RMA department actually phoned me to ask why I was RMA’ing it. When I told them it was of extreme nature of coil whine they tried to fob me off as this was normal in high end gpu. When I asked him has he heard anything like this one he answered “never heard anything like it” RMA’ed approved.

It a shame you don’t live near me. I have a few suprims here I would have swapped you.

After owning a 3090ti LC with that much coil whine you can pretty much deal with any card even the notorious strix 4090 release another card with extreme coil whine.

Just so you know. Suprims while not being as excessively loud like the 3090ti LC or the 4090 strix pretty much have coil whine.

For the 5 series (for some reason I can only get msi cards) the gaming trio and the first suprim 5090 were pretty much low coil whine. I did have the suprim liquid x but returned that for coil whine. And the second suprim I only tested it ROps and a quick and dirty monster hunter wild benchmark to make sure everything was working placed it back in the box. I will be returning that back to ocuk as I want other cards for my setups
