5080 & 5090 Coil Whine Thread

Undervolt - overclock and capping fps to 240hz or using vsync has killed a lot of the excess whine I was getting for single player games, if I set my games to 120hz or 144hz pretty much silent with no coil whine across most games... so the higher demand of 4K 240hz (is definitely part of the issue on my end) along with high polling rates of two of my mice I'm sure.

Still will run it uncapped for anything multiplayer based as I want higher 1% lows possible.

Edit : 144hz 4K has taken the suprim to near perfect conditions on silent mode - Tried in Delta Force multiplayer and Top Spin 2K25 single player so far.

Twinsies!!!! I bet you have never hear a card as bad as the 3090ti LC. Mine would coil whine as soon as you powered it on. Through post and when you got to the windows sign in it would be still whining.

People don’t understand how bad and how loud the coil whine actually was on the 3090ti LC.

So I had to fight tooth and nail for it to be approved to be RMA’ed as coil whine is not actually a fault. One of OCUK competitors RMA department actually phoned me to ask why I was RMA’ing it. When I told them it was of extreme nature of coil whine they tried to fob me off as this was normal in high end gpu. When I asked him has he heard anything like this one he answered “never heard anything like it” RMA’ed approved.

It a shame you don’t live near me. I have a few suprims here I would have swapped you.

After owning a 3090ti LC with that much coil whine you can pretty much deal with any card even the notorious strix 4090 release another card with extreme coil whine.

Just so you know. Suprims while not being as excessively loud like the 3090ti LC or the 4090 strix pretty much have coil whine.

For the 5 series (for some reason I can only get msi cards) the gaming trio and the first suprim 5090 were pretty much low coil whine. I did have the suprim liquid x but returned that for coil whine. And the second suprim I only tested it ROps and a quick and dirty monster hunter wild benchmark to make sure everything was working placed it back in the box. I will be returning that back to ocuk as I want other cards for my setups

Yep I know exactly what you mean, thankfully I've only ever returned 2 cards for coil whine so not had as much experience, lets see if this Astral will get approved (it should under consumer law but still).

Sure I ll pop over mate, I was near Cardiff 2 months ago, doing a little Wales trip in the M3 (blackmountain pass etc) :D

I know the Suprim won't be free of it, but as long as its manageable or quiet enough to not bother me, then that's ok. If it's bad I ll try Aorus Master next, although as you say, you can buy 2 of the same card and 1 will do it, the other won't so...

I feel bad for the retailers, returning these, but I don't feel bad for manufacturers that are letting this bs slide during QC or even design stages. Why is it that most cheap variants (palit, inno3d, gainward etc) actually have noticeably less or no coil whine compared to top end models? They all use 600W after all.

Clip of the Astral which I've returned... yes you could hear it very clearly in game. Still present with a 'curve undervolt' + power limit.

So you've returned a Suprim and Astral due to coil whine? That sucks! Could it be something else in your system? Or perhaps just bad luck.

4K 240hz?

Yes - it’s not pushing that with gsync on though. More like 170-190

Just from my own experience even if I'm not hitting the full 4K 240hz definitely has coil whine in every game for me to varying degrees,

4K 144hz cap has been very quiet in comparison, faintest of whine in some games to none on silent mode on the suprim.

So I received my Astral 5090 LC yesterday and everything is great, overclocking headroom seems good on this one too, build quality, temps etc, all ace.

Apart from, and you guessed it, the worst coil whine I've ever heard. No I'd say its not a whine, it's screech for help, that is so loud, system fans have to be above 70% to drone it out. I took 2 videos at 240fps cap in a game and uncapped benchmark:

So realistically before I go insane, is there any point in trying to RMA for a replacement Astral LC or do I get a refund and start playing the card lottery once stock has normalised somewhat with different brands?
I have the same card and there is some whine when benching and I tried to record it, but tbh, on play back the PC just sounds louder than it is in real life. With the case door shut, I can hardly hear it.
I've just re listened to yours and especially the second one, sounds like a kettle boiling. Defo I have about 1/10 gaming, it will be there but I can't hear it.
4/10 benching. I had an Air and would say it was 6/10 benching.
So may be worth trying to get it replaced, but you may just have to go for a refund.
I'm using a new Asus 1200w 3.0 psu with native 12pwr cable that came with PSU.

Lucky man, i'd be happy with a little whine, its just this completely overpowers my system and defeats the purpose of having noctuas etc, as the whine is all I can hear haha.

PSU wise I am using a BeQuiet Platinum 1500W unit that also has 2x native 12vhpwr slots, I've tried both and even a 2nd cable, I know its not my system purely based on how many other videos I've heard of this (lots of 5090 coil whine content on YT).

I would ideally like one of the watercooled variants, the astral is a very pretty thing, hefty and feels overbuilt, but the coil whine can be heard even with my open-back headphones on!

I know many can deal with it or it is meaningless but for myself and some others, it's just not acceptable.

No, that's not right, if you can hear it in a closed case with earphones on, then yeah, thats not aceptable at all or something to deal with, especially at the price!
I've just finished playing a bit of the Last of us part 2, and an hour or so of Indy Jones. Granted I have an undervolt on when Gaming (IJ under 400w ish av), but I actualy muted the soundbar (I don't use headphones) and moved the mouse about with the case open, and could not hear any whine or pitch changes from movement and the fans are quite.
So, I defo think you have been unlucky and might be worth trying to get another one, as you say, it's a class card to lock at and very well built/solid.
Did you get it from OCs? Gibbo said they expect a few more LC's next week, wouldn't hurt to ask for a swap...

He's cursed forever to play games sans 5090. He could always do *shudders* zotac/palit.........

@Nitefly Fulfil your destiny and get a palit/zotac and your journey to the dark side will be complete...

Young fool only at the end do you realise....

:P

@iiNNeX I can totally get where you are coming from. I have been after an astral for ages but even then I know I will get one with coil whine. Luckily I can deal with it but that's not the point is it? Everytime I go to check what cards I can try out I end up with MSI now this is not really an issue in itself but I would like to try an Aorus master as I have never owned one from any generation. Suprims/strix I have owned tons so I know what they are all about.

It also gets kind of a chore being on the GPU merry go round. By that I mean I really annoyed by myself as you would think after owning so many suprims/strix's I would have learnt my lesson...yet here we are. As much as I meme on the palit/zotacs while there are reports of coil whine they don't seem as prevalent as the suprims or astrals.

The mental gymnastics needed just for me to decide if I had to pick one scares me.

Hmm, thinking about it a bit more, how many of us are actually pushing 240hz at 4K without DSC?

It probably is the hz that’s making a difference re: desktop noise.

If you’re only running a 144hz monitor then you’re not going to encounter 240hz whine.

Granted, I’ve had whine in games at sub-100hz but I’m guessing this is a big part of ‘idle whine’.
