Will do cheers both, yea I just hate games where you find you're own path, I need a bit of direction or I get bored quickly

I guess a counter argument to that , from my own perspective, is not everyone is time rich to do all the discovery themselves. As a single guy in the early 2000's if I wasn't down the pub I was playing MMORPG's including Jumpgate TRI (very Elite like) tens of hours a week was very doable. Nowadays I have to grab an hour here and and hour there because I'm married with kids. Being able to dip in and out trying different things because others have lead the way is super useful. I've done a week of Xenobiology, a week of mining, some Engineer levelling and some basic Combat missions in the last month. I've really enjoyed it and I'm never going to master this game because I'm too time poor but I am getting to expereince some of the breadth.
I never thought I’d see anyone else mention JG. Absolutely one of my favourite games ever! Wish we could get a new version.

How is ED now? I haven’t touched it since PP/Engineers as that for me totally ruined the game.

Anyone else doing the event this evening hosted by the AXI for Finance Friday Thargoid hunting in the California Nebula? I'm just about to take my carrier over that way now :)

Just to answer your question, I stopped playing the game a number of years back due to how grindy I found it. I've been back and actively playing since the AX Titan bombing event November / December last year, and I've been having an amazing time. I've been out exploring, kitted out my ships with high-level engineering (which just isn't such a grind now) and tonight I'm joining the AXI community event hunting Thargoids in the California Nebula. So yeah, it's great!

I stopped before thargoids were even in it. I might have to load it up and have a go again. I’m guessing an anaconda isn’t the best ship these days haha

Thanks for the explanation Chokka, can you please explain what is this AX Titan event? Is there anywhere that explains about what needs to be done?
Back in December there was a major event for Elite's 10 year anniversary that was marked by a huge Thargoid mothership, a Titan, invading the Sol system and destroying pretty much all of the stations around there. Sol was opened up (it's usually permit-locked) to all pilots and there was a call to arms for everyone to destroy the Titan. Titan-bombing is a specific type of gameplay which is quite difficult to do really well, but some videos were published on Youtube by an AXI pilot (AXI is Anti-Xeno Initiative, a player group focused on Thargoid combat) to show how to successfully bomb, and it was a major even in the game that lasted for about a week. It was loads of fun and became the most participated event in Elite's history with over 22000 pilots taking part.

Here's a video:

I've set the video to start at around the time where he begins his bombing run so that you can see the scale of the Titan and what the bombing entailed.

Both my son and I took part in the event, and following on from that, I discovered that I really enjoyed the Thargoid combat element to the game and I've since pursued that more and more. Although I have also spent quite a bit of time exploring, doing Exobiology, and bounty-hunting again.

I've just finished up with the event that was held in the game and I've come out with about 1.4 billion credits just from taking part and assisting with the destruction of the Thargoids. You'd also be surprised at just how well the Anaconda still stacks up. It's definitely still one of the premier ships for top-tier combat, surpassed only by the Corvette in some situations, but it's better than the Corvette in AX combat, and can still be kitted out to achieve a jump range of almost 100LY. But saying that, they have also released a bunch of new ships that are worth looking at. The Mandalay for exploration, the Cobra Mk 5 for multi-role, the Type 8 for transport, the Python Mk 2, and the new Corsair, which has pretty much replaced the Python as the best mid-sized multirole ship in the game.

If anyone wants any help with the game, or needs any assistance picking things up, or just generally wants to team up to do some things together, add me. My ingame name is CHokKA.

I bought my very first PC to play Jumpgate when I came across it doing an internet search on Elite, I got my first ever home internet connection (dial-up of course) to dowlonad it which took hours and needed a download manager to deal with the disconnections. I still have my first Microsoft Sidewinder Joystick which I'm still currently using to play ED with too 24 years later :-P. I loved Jumpgate the combat and physics model was exquisite and the community was great. But eventually most moved on and I joined a lot of the community in Planetside for years but never made the move to WoW. I'm really enjoying E:D it is an amazing game that keeps offering up more at every step.

I have been playing elite since 1st beta and following closely since the KSer.

I am vocal on the forums and absolutely can't stand those who cheat in any online games. I am honest to a fault when it comes to games and even refused to take part in anything exploity in elite.

and yet after 3000hrs+ I got the dreaded message from frontier that they were giving me a 7 day ban from other players and confiscating some of my stuff due to cheating..

it's fair to say I am ....... off as much a out the accusation as anything. I have since possibly worked out why.
there is a bug on the steamdeck which makes the game performance jump all over the place but the thing is it's not my fault frontiers code is a buggy mess.
the game is meant to be playable on the deck. I tolerated the lumpy glitching even tho I lost 2 T9s fully loaded due to it but FD banning me ?

that is a step too far. FD needs to get their .... sorted .

sorry bit ranty :)

What? I only play on the deck these days and the last couple of times I've played I've had some performance issues with it going all choppy for a few seconds, is that what you're talking about? I watched a CMDR Mechan video a week ago which was reporting some performance bug which happened like clockwork at a specific time interval, so thought it was something to do with that. Is it to do with that as well? What the hell?

I am waiting for FD to get back to me but that is what I suspect that as well as some speed issues where my ship goes really fast for a few seconds before slowing down again. the clock in the top right of the screen also goes screwy . suffice to say I have done absolutely no client manipulation.

this is the message from them.

Not good from them at all, keep pushing back on it for certain, I thought I was going to have to contact support a couple of days back when I got stuck trying to jump to supercruise from a colonisation supply ship, just sat there watching my temp climb while the game was obviously struggling to connect to the instance and nothing I could do apart from force quit the game if it got really bad, annoying when you're running a type 9 with an SCO that overheats somewhat rapidly.

It'll be that sodding half arsed Trailblazers abortion of an update. Who in their right mind issues a beta test into the live server. I have absolutely zero interest in colonisation.

Yes, performance has gone to ruin along with the live beta (and yes, an absolutely ridiculous thing to do) and I had a lot of interest in it until I realised just how limited it is, I'm still doing stuff for it but basically it's yet another minimum viable update from FD, had they actually communicated with the players what they were intending with it I am positive they would have been told in no uncertain terms to go back to the drawing board, another feature that could have been so very much better than it is.

Jumpgate was my first MMO (can you call it that?) helped create the squad Red Dwarfers and as you say everything just seemed so spot on!

I eventually moved away to both DAoC & Planetside as well.

How do you guys play this on the steamdeck? Is it really possible?

the steam version just works. just be careful if you get the speed issue bug that I had you need to totally log out and log back in or FD may punish you.

also on LCD model at least some missions text is unreadable ( IE codes for lockers in oddy bases)

performance is what I would consider on the border of being acceptable and sometimes totally tanks for a few seconds but the controls work well with the steamdeck.
for me it's not a game I would play exclusively on the deck but for convenience and doing mundane stuff it's v useful

The only thing which you need to be aware of when playing on the Steam Deck is that when you start the game and it first loads to launcher, you have to use touch screen to click the on screen button the play the game, as the Deck controls don't seem to take affect until you're actually in the game. This also applies to quitting the game to some extent. You can exit the game via the in game menu, but once it goes back to the launcher you have to close that window with the top right close box using touch screen again. This is mildly annoying, but for me the performance in game is easily good enough for space flying/combat and SRV driving, though it all depends on spending the time to optimize your controls to suit you.
