Energy Prices (Strictly NO referrals!)

i've always used eon, no issues with them and their customer services have not disappointed
if i needed to get hold of their EV/SEG team an email always gets answered within the same day or the next day
CS via phone has not been an issue either

Those who have switched from Octopus to EON Drive, how quickly did it happen. I see you have to sign up for the standard tariff and wait for them to move you once they see smart meter readings.

I am tempted to switch and leave gas and export with Octopus for now. Would switch export in the autumn when it basically disappears was my thought process.
Gas ideally I would leave with Octopus as I am on tracker and its cheap for now
I think thats the tariff I might have been thinking off, but it does seem like other suppliers are starting to compete better with Octopus now.

Yep. They have needed to, Octopus have grown to the largest supplier and many are still not actually competing

More like Octopus aren't as good as they used to be.

Nah its not that.
Their customer service took a hit whilst they absorbed bulb but it seems to be back to full strength now.

Octopus offering has not got worse really, marginally on a few tariffs but they were and remain beta anyway, and they only suited a small subset of a small group of people.
EON seems to be stepping up to actually challenge, but the rest are hardly doing so.
Octopus can only go so far though, its still relatively low margin business.
Greg has been pushing for zonal pricing more and more, do you see any others doing so?

Can you name an innovative tariff from another supplier thats not just a basic copy of Octopus?
Tomato and EON Drive are just copies of Octopus. Tomato has a little difference but its not actually a different new angle just a rehashed one Octopus did.

No but to be fair I would disagree with it anyway. Zonal pricing yet another postcode lottery on where you live.
It would be cheaper in the north and Scotland and more expensive in the south east, London and south west. It’s pretty much exactly how you’d want it to be distributed.

The only region that gets screwed over is the East of England because they have both shed loads of renewables and wider infrastructure but get bundled in with London who has neither.

to be honest even tho they do not have an EV i am thinking of just signing them up to octopus go and using that... i think it is better for them than flux will be
The answer will be go if they can use timer functions to use energy out of hours. Most people I know cant be bothered setting the dishwasher for midnight every time, if you can program something and its hands off it can make all the difference. Immersion heaters would be a big one, thats a natural store of energy done right.

Are there any EV suitable tariffs which have a useable cheap window now or are they all after midnight? Octopus used to have some which started earlier so you could do washing or use the tumble dryer. Now it seems like you are punished to use electric in the day but get a cheap window just for the car.

I know Tomato had some good options but they aren't taking on new customers.

When you say ‘now’ do you literally mean now as in 17:00-1800? That’s peak energy demand when the grid is the most expensive and dirtiest.

Everyone is overnight (cheaper and cleaner) but there are tariffs like Octopus Intelligent Go or Ovo anytime where you can get cheap electricity during most of the day if you need it.

Edit: say you work a night shift and plug in at 6am, Ocotpus will recharge the car to 11am which is the latest ‘ready time’ you can set in the app.

Latest Octopus Tracker not looking too great either.

I've been on July24 and it isn't as good as a lot of people here were getting, presumably on an older tracker, so seems it's just getting less and less worthwhile.

That being said it's been consistently below svr since 27th march.

The tracker we are on expires in August apparently.

The cheap windows used to start earlier like 9pm /10pm.
Now they are after midnight so you can't really make use of them apart from charging the car.

That’s kind of the point, they only want to give you cheap electric during the lowest demand times.

Most people run their dishwashers, washing machines etc overnight.

Don’t forget 6hours of your base load will also be the cheap rare, that’s not insignificant.

Shame as they used to be a lot better.

Makes you wonder how long those cheap night rates will last with more and more EVs and home batteries. Sure they will be cheaper than the day rate but the gap will start to close.

For as long as I can remember, the cheap EV rates have only ever started at 11.30pm at the earliest.

‘Eco7’ type tariffs may have started earlier but those rates have never been as good (e.g. 2-3X the EV off peak rates).

It’s unlikely the gap is going to g to close any time soon, the way renewables work means there is always going to be significant curtailment overnight. Daytime electricity demand is going to also start growing soon.

For example rapid chargers are essentially cyclical with the sun, demand ramps up from 9am, peaks at lunchtime and tails off at 5pm.

Then you have heat pumps which basically run all day and most people set back at night.

I was on April'24 Tracker. Just ended, so gone for the fixed 14 month tariff. Was hoping the latest Tracker would be better, but may stick with the fix for now.

It’s not a lottery if you know the price in advance though is it?
Eh? Unless you're moving house it will be imposed on you.

If Milliband is to have any credibility with this he should admit it means different prices in different zones.

This zonal pricing from what I see everyone has different standing charge and unit costs already dependant on where they live. Not overly sure what it will do to be fair. I guess only time will tell if it gets approved and implemented.

I’d be just happier with the prices coming down across the entire country.
