An Elder Scrolls: Oblivion thead

As usual in UE5 I'm getting that annoying traversal stutter, and this is on a 4090, 7950X3D with the game running off a 4TB SN850X NVMe. Even if I use process lasso to lock the game to the CCD cores, you still get that annoying split second stutter when moving through the world, even in caves. The game is running maxed out at 4K with DLSS on quality, frame gen on, all RT settings maxed, and overall I maintain my locked 120fps average the majority of the time. But for that split second the 1% lows will drop from 80 to 100fps to 30fps then jump right back to the high double or even triple digits.

So annoying as the game otherwise runs silky smooth until you get those stutters, but this is usually the same issue for most games that use the UE5 engine. I absolutely hate UE5 and I wish devs would just abandon it, it's a pretty engine, but performance wise a crappy one. I never get stuttering like this from any other engine, and they are far more pretty, far more detailed and more demanding games than this one.

They changed the lighting and color palette of the world so much that lot of the time when exploring I don't feel like I am in Cyrodiil, but in Chernobyl

There are already some mods on Nexus to fix this.

Mods work ok with the gamepass version? And can you get the deluxe edition without paying the full £60?

EDIT
Found the upgrade on Gamepass for 10 quid, worth a punt. Deluxe edition content is 10mb lol.

As a filthy casual (ie someone who only has a Steam Deck and a work laptop), how is this on Xbox Cloud? I've seen some complaints, but is that just because it's capped to 1080p 60fps (which I'd be happy to live with)?

Bought this and played just over 2 hours...and if it wasn't for being over 2 hours, I'd have refunded it.

Looks fantastic, and I bloody loved Oblivion, but man...aside from a hit of nostalgia, it's just not fun to play today. Some of the mechanics that have survived in to the remaster just make the game not fun to play today, worked back in the day, but games have moved on a bit, and it feels awfully clunky. That and the amount of loading screens, albeit very short ones, make it a chore.

I was massively hyped for this when it leaked, but it was just seeing it through rose tinted glasses, as is the case a lot of times when revisiting older games

When this was released originally I was a virgin, now that the remaster is out a lot has changed, still a virgin but the game improvements are 10/10! Feels like a brand new game and 10x better than Skyrim."

How does this compare to a fully modded OG oblivion?

Did they out a lot of work into it?

So much better! There's only so much a modded Oblivion can do. Remastered looks bloody lush with raytracing that's for sure!

If they did a Skyrim like this, I'd be all over that too

Cool. Will add it to my wishlist. Probably won't get to it for another year or so. But good to hear :)

Oh and Patrick Steward :D

Visually, aside from the differing range of colours which make it slightly more bland than the OG was in places, it's a big step up. It just feels a lot smoother, draw distances with the better LOD models are very good, very happy on that front.

The UI has had next to no improvements though, the inventory management is pretty much the same as un-modded OG, which is making it feel a bit archaic on that front. Some weird choices/issues with the dialogue as well, mouse buttons work to skip, then they suddenly don't do anything so you need to use keys, but then sometimes the keys don't work to select the next dialogue option so you swap back to mouse etc.

Combat feels better, they managed to put a little bit more weight in there so there's a more feedback when you start hitting things compared to OG. Levelling is slightly altered, seems like they took the approach of one of the old mods where you just get more points to dump into base stats per level up, rather than having to micro manage every skill increase to get the full benefits each level.

It's a pretty good effort so far, keeps all the charm of the original, if mod support comes online then it will be a really good, people will iron out the other bits in no time.

It's actually made me think how decent a Fallout 3/New Vegas remaster might be if they went down the same route.

I've split my play time between native PC & streaming to the Deck (Xbox Cloud). I've found the streaming experience fine.

I don't mind the colours personally. Not seeing the need to mod anything just yet but that's not to say I won't ever.
Might actually make it to the first quest today.

I tried half an hour or so of this via the Game Pass version. It's fine for Game Pass, but I wouldn't have wanted to spend £50 on it. The visuals can be pretty enough when there are no NPCs on screen, but the character animations are still squarely stuck in the 360 era, which really breaks the immersion and undermines a lot of the work done to improve the image quality. Even the very first fight in the sewers is a total jank-fest of clipping bugs and weird NPC-sliding.
