EV general discussion

I was wondering if I could get some opinions on the BYD Seal (Excellence version/AWD)? It seems to review well.

This will be my first EV and I was originally going to go with a Polestar 2 (Or 4 if I could stretch to it).

It's through Tusker with my Employer and it just seems to tick all the boxes (Very well spec'ed, quick and seemly well made) as well as being significantly cheaper than anything else that comes up.

I'll probably try to arrange a test drive this week but wondered if anyone owns one?

(Apologies if this has come up earlier in the thread but I couldn't find anything.)

I tried one for the day - I was very impressed. Definitely worth considering, the main drawbacks are:

- Software seems a bit hit and miss, but nothing too bad.

- BYD dealership support - I've heard mixed things, the dealer network is very new.

- There seems to be issues getting parts for insurance repairs, very long delays (several months) - this plagued Tesla in the early days.

I booked a drive for tomorrow so I'll report back here.

I own the Seal Design, I've had it about a month now and I'm really pleased with it. The interior is excellent and looks and feels premium. Build quality seems decent, all the shut lines are spot on and the car feels solid.

Infotainment is good, does the job and I've no real complaints. The rotating screen is a novelty but is actually quite useful in navigation as it shows a huge view of the route.

Driving is smooth and soaks up the bumps well, I've not had an issue with the assists and I've been down country roads, motorway lane changing is where I've found it annoying. There is a bit of wind noise but nothing too bad.

Reason I went for the Design was cost and range. Whilst fun, I just couldn't see myself planting my foot at every stop and with the interior being identical, albeit the HuD, that was good enough for me.

If there is anything specific you want to know I will try and answer.

I've been looking at a BYD Seal in both versions but one thing I saw a while back mentioned was that the Sat nav wasn't great. The main issue raised is that it didn't route plan with charging stops included automatically and you would need to route them yourself. Has this changed now? as I do not know what SW version it was on.

My wife likes the BYD atto 3 so we had a test drive last week. Loved everything but the driving aids which are a bit annoying to get to in the menu to turn off.

The new MG is much better as there’s a driver preset that you can save your settings to and just select that.

Does anyone own, or have opinions on, an Audi Q4 E-tron? The wife has seen a few of these around and likes the look of them. It'd only be used around town and for the school run etc. Any advice would be appreciated.

a hell of a lot of car for the money. if you can make the range work for you i would say it has to be worth a look. my brother in law has the hybrid equivalent of it (Q5) and its a superb car. The range didnt work for him on the full EV . The prices of them today 2nd hand i wish we had been able to wait as it would have been v short on the list for our 2nd car.

big car for an around town run about but if you need the size then ....................

edit... sorry my bad, wrong car, i was thinking of the original Etron. feel free to ignore

So I just test drove the BYD Seal Excellence AWD, and long story short I pulled the trigger on one the moment I got home, from Tusker. I was impressed to say the least.

A few thoughts.

Interior is great, I've only really owned a succession of decent but fairly ordinary cars, for comparison I have a 70 plate Volvo XC40 and the BYD looks and feels more premium. The seats were much better, the rear seats and space was much much better. It just felt like a nice place to be. That being said the boot was smaller than I expected but I'm not that bothered. The panoramic roof was quite tinted but I liked it.

I had a good go over a variety of roads and I'll start with the 530BHP dual motors. Wow! Just wow! It is by far and away the most rapid car I have ever driven. The first time I stopped on a back road and just floored it I was grinning from ear to ear. A lot of reviews mentioned some lag between flooring it and the acceleration kicking in but it seemed pretty instantaneous to me. But I've never driven an electric before, from the point of view of an ICE driver it was perfect. Once I got used to the power on tap it was really nice to drive. 50-70 was in the blink of an eye and again I really couldn't discern any lag maybe a little but I can remember driving turbo cars back in the 90s (Fiat Uno Turbo etc) and it was nothing like that. For me also, the suspension was fine - not too hard or soft, it seemed to deal with shabby UK back roads comfortably. One problem with the Volvo is that it wallows a bit. The BYD was much better in that respect and felt fixed to the road, I'm not really much of an expert but it just felt fine. Frankly it was a better drive than the XC40 or an older Merc GLA220 which we have.

I was surprised how good the HUD was, actually I think it's a bit of a gamechanger having never seen one before. It was big, bright, really clear and in colour. I never once had to look at the instrument cluster just behind the wheel.

A lot of reviews mention the driver assistance stuff being a real pain but I never noticed it once. You can turn most of it off, and I think the garage had done that prior but I don't think it resets it self as I turned to car off and on halfway through the drive. All I got was a very quiet bong when the speed limits changed. The was no warning if you exceeded the speed limit (ever so slightly, of course) and I tried moving across lane marking etc and it didn't react or anything. From what I could see it was a non issue.

It has a big tablet in the centre and then a smaller screen behind the wheel and these were both fine. The one behind the wheel displays the speed and discharge rate. It didn't look particularly slick in design (the screen itself was fine) and was rendered rather pointless by the excellent HUD. The centre screen/tablet display was also fine but the software is a bit meh. It's perfectly responsive but just feels a bit half baked, that being said it seems to work fine, just doesn't look particularly slick. The onboard nav software seemed to be perfectly functional, with option for seeking out chargers etc but nothing special. There were a lot of menus and setting to delve into. However Apple carplay worked flawlessly and connects wirelessly so I'm not really that bothered, as that is all I'll ever use - it also has android auto. It also has two wireless chargers at the front which worked fine. I have a feeling that the software is something that is continuously improved, so ill see how that goes.

In short I was really impressed - I was going to check out a polestar and maybe a tesla but I'll not bother now, they maybe slightly better, particularly from the software side but for me at least, the BYD is about 20% cheaper via Tusker so it was a no brainer.

They are decent cars, based on the VW MEB platform so underneath the skin it's more or less the same as the VW ID4, Skoda Enyaq just pick the one you like. Nothing particularly great or bad about them tbh, if the size and range meet your needs then there's nothing really to be particularly aware of I don't think.

Octopus Electroverse have a plunge pricing event tomorrow.

80% of EV charging tomorrow in certain locations in the east, south east and London.

Participating networks are Ionity, Instavolt, Be.EV, Raw charging and Osprey.

I wonder what they are up to.

Edit 2pm - 4pm so not the middle of the night either!

Seems I get a free ohme pro standard install with my next cupra. Bonus. Will try to pay the extra for a 8m upgrade Changed the car to the forest green, VZ only colour too. Yolo

There are some small areas highlighted in purple where the offer applies, I’m guessing excess renewables on the grid in those areas tomorrow.

It’s a bit odd because it doesn’t look that windy onshore, it will be sunny but not that sunny. .

so is seal going to be your principal family car then, or xc40 boot space&versatility will pip it / ?watch this space.

Unfortunately we need two cars for the school run etc if I'm working. I have a long commute so the Seal is mainly for that. If we do a long trip away we'll probably use the Volvo, at least until I figure out things like the charging network etc, and just the whole electric car thing really.
