BMW and M Power Owners

is it more when they go wrong they cost mega money to fi
This.

As with all non-mandated insurance, if you don't use it, it's a waste of money.
but if you needed it and did not have it, you wish you did.

Just your attitude to risk and how much money you have, should something major go wrong. The likelihood is low, but low does not mean zero.

It's a small price to pay for peace of mind, that's how I view it. £300ish a year for a Comprehensive policy on my M135i, which is a miniscule amount when it comes to the overall ownership cost.

Take the F87 M2C for example. Roughly £1500 a year and the common S55 crank hub failure alone is £2000-3000. This would be covered under the policy.

Yes, you could stick that £1500 to one side and save it for repairs, but what happens if the gearbox, turbo or even engine goes in the first 18 months of ownership. Any of those things would be far in excess of what the policy costs. Admittedly the likelihood is low as @tamzzy pointed out, but the chance is never zero.

Hmm, quote for £718 for an M140i with 54k on the clock, after 1 year of my current mileage (~12k) that then goes to £1185.
Hard to justify throwing that kinda money away :D

The 60,000 mile point is a significant milestone for BMW Insured Warranty because the price increases significantly for annual renewals if you're over 60,000 miles. Switching to a monthly payment plan can help avoid this price hike, as the monthly cost remains consistent regardless of mileage. However you won't get the benefit of annual payment savings and the loyalty discount after having a year of the insured warranty.

Personally, I'd get an AUC car. You'll get 1 year AUC warranty included, and when that runs out you can renew the Insured warranty with the discount price if you want. They will also consider 3rd party warranty for the discount price so if you bought a car from a non-BMW dealership and got 3 months warranty, you can use that to get Insured warranty cheaper. I'd say try and find a private one which has Insured warranty already, but unfortunately I think it would be difficult to find a cherished M140i private sale with warranty.

Looking between £3-6k more for the privilege though :(

EDIT: I see a lot of people getting extended warranties with BMW's, are they that unreliable or is it more when they go wrong they cost mega money to fix? I currently have a Volvo and the main dealer rates are higher than my local Audi, Volvo parts are also extortionate, so in my head, I have costs between the BMW comparable to what I have at the mo.

The insured warranty is reasonable and doesn’t require you to service with BMW, so makes sense generally to get it.

F20 is generally reliable though, especially the B58. Would probably self insure instead :-)

In all seriousness, would you be interested in my F21 M135i? I'm about to put it up for sale.

2015 LCI, 52k miles and still under Insured Warranty until Sept. I've owned it since 2017 and have every receipt/invoice from the 8 years of ownership (bought from BMW at 12k miles). It's clean, completely stock (never modded) and has all the key options. If you're interested I can PM you.

Sure, send me a PM and I'll take a looky, I've not really looked into those.

fyi, the 35i is the older N55 engine, the 40i is the newer B58 engine.
just saying as you've specifically asked about the B58 engine earlier
Thanks, yeah I'd read a bit about the earlier engine. Do they suffer bottom end failure? I was initially looking at 330D's before my mileage dropped but this issue put me off - Seems a lot of BMW engines can suffer this.

Mine has never suffered bottom end failure and I haven't heard of that being a common issue with the N55 (not to say it isn't a problem).

PM sent.

B58, so much potential, I just wish BMW stopped engineering their engines to fail. Why so much plastic, BMW tell me why..

Do I have to remind people mine is 8 years old with 130k and no problems?

Or how about the 123d that had 215k+ with no meaningful issues?

plastics been a problem since 90's, my m50 : plastic water impeller and radiator expansion tank ... it's the newer eco/non-solvent paints that are the pariah.

N55 and B58 generally bulletproof, especially compared to some of the issues which have plagued other engines. No timing chain issues or injector problems.

Usually only the water pump being a failure point but it’s not a huge cost.
