5080 & 5090 Coil Whine Thread

@Rawr - thanks for the suggestions. My case is already partially soundproofed (dark base pro 901) and I’m aware that once you add more soundproofing… you generally get less airflow and more thermal insulation… which means louder case fans.

But yes, I haven’t really thought about swapping the case… it’s something I could think about.

I have tried moving the PC around (under and to the side of my desk) and it was possibly because my brain was having a rager but this didn’t really make a difference, although I didn’t try this with the Zotac card (I wasn’t happy with it regardless so I didn’t see the point).

From memory, I could undervolt the other cards to silence, but not the Zotac. It may just be selective memory though.

And just like all other ‘minor life problems’, the more you try to deal with them, the more you reinforce to your brain that there is a problem that much be dealt with and it becomes a ‘bigger problem’… sort of a counter-intuitive ‘viscous circle’!

‘Dealing with it’, at this point for me, probably is just accepting that I can’t get on with it (right now) at least and moving on. It’s just super disappointing as I went through a similar thing with 4090s… they were terrible with whine / faulty fans and in the end I just gave up.

@Personality+ thanks for the suggestion, I’ve tried noise cancelling headphones already as I own a pair, as well as a gaming headset with a mic (Razer Blackshark?).

That comes with the downsides of the relative discomfort of having them sat on your head plus the ear pressure of the noise cancellation. Plus I find that I get irritated thinking “grr why do I have to wear these” - that’s a me problem though.

I did consider trying out the Apple AirPod Maxes as those are supposed to be very comfortable to wear for long periods… but it feels like I’m just bleeding money with that kind of spend to fix this problem. Might be a next step.

In summary, I am trying…! :( :p

I'd be surprised if you could undervolt the others to silence. I don't think I've ever managed to fully get rid of coil whine with a uv, just reduce it enough it isn't audible above fans, or it being less annoying.

I don't think you need noise cancelling by the way. Even open back headphones tend to do a good job with masking coil whine. I used to use a pair of sennheiser 6xx (massdrops 650 version) and a 598 before that. Both of those are open back, letting all other audio in but they always blocked coil whine, I assumed the material was just good at dealing with the high pitched noise of coil whine. Currently I have a slightly more closed pair which still deals with it.

Not all over head headphones are uncomfortable. I think the noise cancelling ones can be due to them trying to be portable but the sennheiser for example have always felt light in a way I dont notice them on my head as much. My current ones were less comfy out of the box but I managed to mod them to comfort, swapped leather pads for some hybrid velour leather ones and added some dekoni nuggets on the headband to stop hot spots.

A very sad situation, and perhaps, a break with a re-focus on other things may do the medicine.

Coincidentally, I found myself 'tuning in' to some coil whine the other night and I recalled this thread: I quickly ramped up the volume of my headphones and got side-tracked by the increased game audio! Again, I have my case below my desk and use headphones so the impact is not too bad.

There's no doubt it can be an annoyance, and I have managed to find a way of 'tuning out' when - I think - some whine is audible: on 1 or 2 occasions that has meant turning off a game, cracking open another beer and reducing the GPU intensity (e.g. web surfing).

Best of luck!

Spent $7K on it and can't even return it, gotta love consumer protection laws in some countries
Yeah it shocking really. But you got to remember coil whine is not a fault. But I am more concerned with anyone who is willing to spend big money on graphics cards or for that matter any item cars, watches, etc. not doing their due diligence.

The people who have been in this hobby a long time know what Asus is about. When we are talking about their GPU's alone and this is irrespective of their RMA practice and Customer service you know you will be paying the most for their cards and they invaribly they are one of the worst offenders of cards with coil whine. Now of course you are gonna get people who don't have coil whine.

Their cards due to marketing and the fanbase automatically make them the most desired cards nearly generation after generation. I am NGL I love Asus products but I am well aware of what they are or not. ANd I have used their products for a very very long time. I have an extensive experience of their GPU cards. from teh 3 series 2x3070 strix, 2x 3070ti strix and 1 Strix LC 3090 ti.

From the 4 Series 3 Strix 4090 and 1 strix 4080. From the 5 series Astral 5090 and 2 Astral 5090 LC. And out of all of them guess which one had no coil whine or the minimum? 1 that was the white strix 3070. And Don't think I am hating on Asus. The next worst offender from my collection is Msi Suprims. I don't really give a toss what generation it from they are nearly as bad. The only saving grace in that respect is that their RMA process is a lot less worse than Asus.

You got to remember from the so called top tier cards when it working great sure it's the best over any other card. But when it not...then you will know real pain. When it bad then it worst than any so called low level tier card. Like what gonna grind your nuts. Your 3k card having bad coil whine or a 2k card? think about it.

And don't even get me started on the White Asus tax....

White Astral Enters the chat. HolD my beer...

Me: Just take my frigging money.....

:P

While true fact that he simply can't return it makes me glad we have somewhat decent laws in place, because no sane person could live with a GPU sounding like that

I wonder if they have meetups often with the Nintendo and Fromsoft fanbois haha

But in all seriousness I have seen what people are willing to pay for that Asus tax™, I did have 2 Strix cards, a 4090 which I got at a great price and it was a solid card but I didn't think the card warranted the normal price it was going for, and a 3080 before that which was terrible at cooling and had coil whine

Hello,
Some people have reported having coil whine at the ... IDLE on a 5090 Suprim X in particular, and when moving the mouse too.
What do you think?

it really does depend and by that i mean is that as bad as it gets under idle and load.? Personally if it whine at idle i just send it back.

And I am super tolerant to coil whine however i jusy feel it just a literal slap in the face so i return out of principle and cos i am a grumpy old barsteward.

Yes I had ‘whine when moving the mouse’ at stock, it was pretty horrid - sent it back, retail RMA agreed it was faulty / unacceptable.

From memory, I could mostly kill this from a super aggressive undervolt (boosting to around just 2,400hz) but then you just feel a bit of a plank. I’d take a properly silent 2,400hz at this point though.

@Nitefly I get it given your experiences. What are you using nowadays?

A 3090, which is a little noisy also but I power limit it away.

Truth be told, I’ve been enjoying playing on my Switch during this ‘downtime’… old N64 games, actually. Isn’t it nice to just play something fun that ‘just works’ without it causing a racket / nuisance? Ahhh :)

But tinkering and playing around has its own fun… I haven’t been able to resist speccing up my own custom water loop. I’m a sucker for punishment, I guess :p
