I can vouch for that having gone 2080 / 3080 / 4080 Super.The difference with a 4080 Super or faster is immense.
The real question here is how much you can get close enough with raster vs. the RT/PT and it would probably be pretty close a lot of times. I do like RT/PT, but some of these statements are hyperbolic at best.![]()
It would take 2 years, and 2TB of data, to pre-bake the lighting of Assassin's Creed Shadows
As Ubisoft's Nicolas Lopez said in a GDC 2025 presentation, it would take 2 years to pre-bake the lighting of Assassin's Creed: Shadows.www.dsogaming.com
More of what most of us already knew, but at least now platformed to a wider audience.

whilst you may not be wrong objectively. IF I was happy with a fair approximation I would save myself a truck load of money and just buy a base model PS5.The real question here is how much you can get close enough with raster vs. the RT/PT and it would probably be pretty close a lot of times. what has star citizen got to do with it?You know what **** it.... there is nothing that comes to even a fraction of being close to the scale of Star Citizen which uses a heavily modified and updated version of CryEngine 3 GI lighting system, the lighting in that game is stunning and its 120 GB, not **** 600 TB by their measure.....
I explained the relevance, runs fine at 4K upscaled from 1440P highest setting on my potato PC.what has star citizen got to do with it?
besides that runs like a bag of ass on my pc or does each time I try it.
I will be interested to see what it's final recommended specs are for ultra settings if I want a solid 60fps at 4k when it launches
it is absolutely possible to get beautiful shots without ray tracing but WITH ray tracing it would likely look better still and will look more natural in more scenarios.
Please tell me you're not using that as an example of good lighting?I explained the relevance, runs fine at 4K upscaled from 1440P highest setting on my potato PC.

I know that... But again, going by YT videos there isn't THAT much going on with that game. KDC 2 (maybe even 1), TW3, Watch Dogs 2 and 3 (Legion), they look rather decent when it comes to GI and don't take close to a 1TB or more of data. Statements like that just show how "efficient" UBI approaches the tech side. I kinda want more than a generic stand, gameplay/art style included. Look, I love PT in CB77, but without the ability to destroy the lights, turn them ON/Off, a lot is lost...How long is a piece of string? The closeness depends purely on development time put into baking in the raster lighting and shadows. We already know how much this can cost based on very recent articles talking about it with top tier devs, whereas with RT/PT it's effectively place light and let the bounces do the rest. Raster cannot and will never be able to realistically render dynamic reflections, shadows or light without having artefact or screen space issues.
@Nexus18 points this out all the time.

The last time I remember being blown away by lighting effects was probably Doom 3, and I'm not talking "pretty" in the way you can often easily get with a space sim. Eve Online had some stunning vistas back in the day and that's an MMO, any space orientated game can quite easily implement them by comparison to most games with the odd caveat.
RT is starting to get to the point it's compelling, it's just a shame the push began (imo) far too early for the software and more importantly hardware that was available.
Short video of what I mean in regards to Doom, hold in mind this is a 21 year old game that would run decently on cards another 3-4 years older:
