oh and sitting in a river tile makes you immune to melee attack and you just sit there.. ...
In terms of game stability, bugs etc ... it's fine. But still lacking content and I remain unconvinced by some of the game mechanics eg. 3 separate ages, which will presumably never change. I'd recommend waiting until next year, by which point most of the DLC on to the roadmap will have been released. Even then it probably requires another major expansion, or two, to add some meat to the bones ( it was the same with Civ 5 and 6 ).Has this been cleaned up a bit since launch? I heard that it needed a couple of patches post release to be worthwhile.
Hmm sounds like I might not be back, not this year for sure to check in on it. Regarding the alternatives I did try Endless Legend 1 but I couldnt gel with it and it just didnt feel like a direct runner to Civ so I'm not all that sure there is an alternative I want to play either which sucks. Its better than it was at launch but I fear that the fundamental design choices may well stop me from ever truly enjoying the game. Not going to lie, its a very sad state of affairs, the Civ games have been top titles in my gaming library for me, for almost 35 years, so its a real shame for my thoughts on it to be this way. I've always viewed Civ as the king of the genre which effectively it created but maybe its time for a new head for the crown, they've done superbly though to fight off SO many challengers to their throne for over 3 decades. I've got my eyes on Endless Legend 2 later this year as the next potential regent of the genre, I'm really liking the sound of some of their game mechanics.
It will be interesting to see if Modders can rescue this game.
If the internet is to be believed the player numbers for this are not good especially compared to legacy Civ games. You may be a in a minority in getting so much enjoyment out of it.There are already quite a lot of mods; they just aren't being offered through Steam Workshop.
They have helped quite a lot with fixing UI issues, etc, but it seems that a lot of people just don't like the three Age structure and I don't think that modders are going to really address that. It's a shame; I think it's comfortably the best iteration of Civ even with the UI issues.

I have played the Civ series for years, not picked the latest one up yet as everyone seems to be complaining about it... came in here today to see if its worth picking up yet, and this completely put me offI've now tried to play this multiple times (after each 'improvement' patch) and truely it is just horrendously bad in curreent state to the point I just have to put it back down agin after 30 minutes. There's no hook and I'm just not invested in carrying on at all (first time ever with a civ game) I've ended up playing Europe Universalis 4 instead. I may not have a clue what I'm doing in EU4 but it's a damn site more interesting and fun than civ 7 in current iteration
If you don't mind ancient / Roman theme give Old World a go. It's on sale on Steam at the moment. Definitely one of the better turn based strategy games. Failing that your choices are limited ... Civ 5 still the best of the actual Civ games, in my opinion. I also enjoy Age of Wonders 4 ... but it has a fantasy setting which may put some people off.I have played the Civ series for years, not picked the latest one up yet as everyone seems to be complaining about it... came in here today to see if its worth picking up yet, and this completely put me offIts a shame really, but I feel like the latest iterations of the game have been slowly going down hill... really had an itch to play a Civ or Civ like game, its really a shame

Yes, I've played Humankind ... it's flawed too, and was the "inspiration" for some of the mechanics in Civ 7. And yup, you're correct ... some of the Old Word devs were previously with Firaxis ... Soren Johnson the most notable of the bunch.Have you tried Humankind? What do you think of it? I have it and like it but have played it a lot, I might give Old World a go actually, its made by some ex Fraxis devs right?
