Max out AM4 or enter AM5 ?

Hi all, Since building my AM4 PC (specs below) I havent upgraded anything other than GPU since putting it together which was probably 2018/2019. I'm getting a work bonus soon and want to plan some upgrades.

Current Spec
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600
  • Motherboard: MSI X470 Gaming Pro
  • RAM: 16GB (2×8GB) Corsair Vengeance DDR4 at 3200MHz
  • Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070
  • Power Supply: Cooler Master 750W
  • Case: NZXT S340 mid tower
  • Monitor: 3440×1440 resolution, 60Hz ultrawide

I'm in 2 minds whether to just double the RAM, Get a 5700x3d and that will probably be enough to get me by until i want to get a new GPU. Likely costing around £250 - £300

However... the "treat yourself" side of my brain says get onto the AM5 platform with something like the B650, 32gb, Ryzen 9 7900x bundle currently at £499.99 and be in a better position long term.

I'm not sure what to do for the best.

PC use is primarily gaming but also some light video editing, general admin stuff, etc

max out am4 with a 5700x3d
you won't need to upgrade to am5 and can skip the whole generation altogether
your next big upgrade will be am6 or the intel equivalent

you buy am5 now and in a few years, you'd be asking the same question: max out am5 or jump to am6
waste of money imo lol

5700x3d and second hand 32gb kit would see you right unless you're going for a say a 5080/5090 in which case I'd go the whole hog
 
I'd go double the ram and 5700x 3d. That in itself would be a big boost and you could probably upgrade the GPU later without having to do the platform again.
 
Id get a second hand set for the MM for about 35 quid and get rid of yours. You could get another if it's exactly the same kit if you wanted but potential compatibility issues would put me off
 
Thanks all for the recommendations so far. If i looked at a new/used set of 32gb RAM should i get 3600mhz over 3200mhz ? do latency timings matter ?
 
They do matter, but not so much if you've got an x3d. 3200 cl16 is akin to 3600mhz cl18. You can always tune whatever you get if it's got the right chips...

i have 64gb [4x16gb] of basically the same ram as this, ive not got the experience to say anything other than its been doing fine for me for the last 5 months ive been using
was it a good choice? i went with it because it was the easiest one to find on the qvl for my mobo that would have hte clearance for my cpu cooler [noctua ndh15]
im still loving my "maxxed out" am4 rig [5900x and x570] doubt this helps but lol
 
I mean, my 10 year old son has 4x8gb Corsair ram in his rig with a 5700x3d, but I only got it as it was a cheap matched set...and it's b die 4400mhz :D

This.

X3D really isn't that fussy about speeds, and there's really not much between C16 3200 and C18 3600 anyway.

If buying second hand isn't appealing the kit mentioned by @mickyflynn is a good shout for £50.

As a tight git I'd try my chances with the b-grade above, OCUK were accepting offers on similar kits not too long back for £35 I think.

Ordered the CPU & RAM today. Decided not to make an offer on the b grade as I'm impatient and want to do the upgrade over the week! Quick question on CPU cooler, currently using (and have been since the build) a NZXT x53 Kraken. if plan to keep this build say until AM6 arrives should i consider swapping this out now while I'm doing the CPU upgrade ?

If you are willing to spend £500, then I'd just sell your whole system in one go and build a new one, maybe keep your current SSD if you are attached to the data.

do this, for £235 you can get a 5700x3d and 32gb of ram.

then pump ever penny into a GPU latter, or even grab a 120hz screen and feel the loveliness
